Circle the correct letter of the answer. a) Check with your supervisor that you understand the task and what is required. b) Select the most appropriate measuring equipment to carry out the task. c) Check the measuring equipment is in good working condition. d) All of the above. Q 3. The formwork for a driveway to a house has been constructed. It measures 7 metres long, 3 metres wide and 150mm deep. You are required to calculate how much concrete is needed for the driveway. Select the most appropriate piece of measuring equipment to measure the driveway? Circle the correct letter of the answer. a) A 1 metre carpenters folding rule. b) A 50 metre open frame site tape measure. c) A trundle wheel. d) An 8 metre retractable tape measure. Q 4. A team of landscapers have been called to construct a retaining wall on a construction site where you are the site manager. What is the most appropriate way to communicate what is required for the construction of the retaining wall to the landscapers? Circle the correct letter of the answer. a) conduct an on-site meeting. b) outline the requirements for the retaining wall in a telephone conversation with the landscapers prior to coming to the site. c) provide a set of plans and specifications to the landscapers. d) all of the above. 8 Obtain Measurements Q 5. Complete the following conversions i 3350mm = m 330mm = m iii 10.8M = mm iv 0.45M = mm v 1.5kg = gm vi 500ml = L Q 6. List the units of measurement for the following materials. Item Description of material or task Unit of measure e.g. Bag of concrete kg 1 Concrete to a thickness of 150mm for a driveway 2 The amount of skirting boards to line a room 3 Paint for walls and ceiling 4 Carpet to cover the floor of a room Perform Calculations Q 7. Calculate the total lineal metres (l/m) in these lengths of 150mm X 25mm formwork. There are 8 pieces at 4.8m and 4 pieces at 3.6m. Q 8. You have just measured up for a concrete slab for a picnic table. It is 3500mm long by 2200mm wide. You have been told to order 90 x 35mm rough sawn hardwood to be used as formwork. Determine the lengths required and write the timber order below. Page 8 of 21

9 Q 9. The illustration below shows a circular garden bed in a paved area that is being landscaped. How many lineal metres of plastic garden edging would be required to complete this garden bed? Formula: Circumference of a circle C = 2 π r 2m Q 10. Sheets of 3600mm x 1350mm plasterboard have been ordered to line a room. 12 sheets have been ordered. What is the total wall and ceiling area (m²) that these sheets could cover without any allowance for openings or cutting? Q 11. How many square metres of pavers would be required for the 5m x 3.3m area with the 2m diameter garden bed as in Question 3 above? You are to allow an extra 10% for cutting and waste. Formula A = L x W, Area of circle = π r² 2m Q 12. A drawing showing the strip footings for a garden shed 3.8m x 2.4m are shown below. The footings are 200mm wide X 300mm deep. Calculate the volume of concrete required to fill the excavation. Formula: V = L x W x D 2.4 FOOTINGS FOR GARDEN SHED 3.8 Page 9 of 21

10 Q 13. A 2 pack polyurethane finish is to be applied to a timber floor. The hardener is to be mixed with the base in a ratio of 1 part hardener to 8 parts base. Calculate the amount of hardener that would need to be added to a four litre container of finish. Q 14. The drawing below shows a construction site with a uniform slope of 1 metre in 10 metres. An excavation is to be undertaken on the site. This excavation is to be from a level area that is 18 metres long and 25 metres wide. Calculate the volume of material to be excavated. SLOPE 1:10 18m 25m Q 15. The excavated material will be removed in waste skip bins that have a fill capacity of 22 cubic metres. Assuming a bulking rate of 30%, how many bins will be required? Q 16. The bins require covering before transporting. Each bin is 1.5 metres high, 2.4 metres wide and 6 metres long. The cover must overlap all of the sides by 300mm. What size cover is required for each bin? Show all working. Page 10 of 21

19 Task 4. Practical Projects Students must complete two practical projects under assessment conditions for this cluster. They must be completed as assessment events in simulated industry conditions and within industry time limits. You may be asked to work individually or as part of a team. NB: Your trainer may substitute equivalent practical projects provided that they provide the student with the opportunity to demonstrate the equivalent competencies Step 1. You will be given a copy of the projects plans. You must check the plans for dimensional consistency and identify and correct any errors. Step 2. Complete a SWMS for the project identifying each step and the hazards associated with each. Submit your SWMS to the trainer before commencing. Step 3. Determine the quantities of material required. Complete the Materials Order for both projects. Step 4. Identify the tools and equipment you will be needed to complete the project. Step 5. Complete the practical project to an industry standard and within industry time limits. Your Assessor will be observing your performance in the production of the practical projects. The Observation Checklist then becomes part of the evidence for the unit of competency. Your Assessor will discuss the expected skills to be demonstrated during the practical projects prior to starting. Page 19 of 21
