7 PETRONAS TOWERS Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Architect: Cesar Pelli & Associates Contractor: Mayjus and SKJ Joint Ventures Tallest twin buildings in the world. 88-story circular, step-tapered towers with a module design, connected at Levels 41 and 42 by a double-decker pedestrian sky bridge, unitized system, structural glazing, glazed atriums. Thompson Center Chicago, Illinois Architect: Murphy Jahn Architects 17-story, all-glass exterior, with curved glass panels, immense skylight atrium, bright red exposed steel frame plays, bright turquoise cladding and back painted curtain wall glazing on both the interior of the atrium as well as the exterior of the building. 14 NATIONAL BANK OF DUBAI United Arab Emirates Architect: Carlos Ott & Partners Contractor: Lainge Construction 40-story building with unitized system, structural glazing, and cladding. The tower is supported at the sides by two massive granite columns, and faced with glass curtain walls; on one side the curtain wall curves gracefully from top to bottom, like a billowing sail, and on the other side the curtain wall curves from right to left, like the stern of a ship. 15 TIME WARNER CENTER 10 Columbus Circle Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Contractor: Bovis Lend Lease Time Warner Center is a mixed-use skyscraper developed by The Related Companies. The building surrounds half of Columbus Circle in Midtown Manhattan. Its design consists of two 750 ft towers bridged by a multi-story atrium containing upscale retail shops. The total floor area is divided between offices, residential condominiums, and a hotel. The Shops at Columbus Circle is an upscale shopping mall located in a curving arcade at the base of the building. Twin 57-story buildings with unitized system, structural glazing, and stone cladding. 18 LIBRARY TOWER 633 West Fifth Street Los Angeles, California Architect: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Contractor: Turner Construction Company One of the tallest buildings in the west, and upon completion became the tallest building in the world located in a major seismic region. The building was designed to withstand an earthquake of 8.3 on the Richter Scale. The facade, consisting of granite strips alternating with rectangular windows each over 20 feet long, is also designed to endure deformations of up to 2.5 inches per floor.
