5 The system components of the bearing Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick structure exploit the enormous technical advantages of the Kerto-S. Through comparatively low dead weight and the filigree dimensions, at a simultaneous high level of structural stability, architects and facade planners have sheer limitless design options at their disposal for the conception and implementation of projects. With its timeless and exceptionally attractive natural beauty of the lateral structural view of the laminated veneer lumber Kerto, it is possible to create spatial interior atmospheres with sophistication and a special touch. The laminated veneer lumber, Kerto-S, is the perfect feedstock for the Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick structure. It leaves the factory with a moisture content of only about 9%, which is why shrinkage deformations like contortions and cracks can be virtually excluded with proper use. The slim, highly dimensionally stable cross-sections of the Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick Facade allow dimensions from 50 mm width up to a standard length of 12.0 m. Kerto-S the values. The mullions and sticks are made from Kerto-S. Owing to its enormous tensile strength, bending strength and compressive strength as well as the modulus of elasticity, the exceptionally stable wood veneer is capable of withstanding even the highest stress. Kerto is an especially environmentally-friendly material and there is a good reason why it has been certified with the demanding PEFC Seal for proven sustainable and environmentally-friendly forestry. Kerto-S is made exclusively with watertight glues and adhesives that are low in harmful substances. This means that it is also optimally suited for use on the interior. Protection and beauty. The Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick Facade is optimally suited for use on the interior as well as the exterior. Depending on requirements, Kerto Concept can be upgraded and protected for interior use with environmentally-friendly colour wood stain. To meet the most various of design concepts, the external finish of the Kerto Concept Facade can be achieved with coverstrips made of aluminium or timber. The timber profiles come with durable transparent finifh, pretreated with translucent colour ground coats. This coating emphasises the natural wood character and sustainably protects the profiles. The slim, high-strength components of the Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick Facade are supplied by Finnforest Merk either as raw material, or completely ready-to-fit, including glazing system. Kerto-Q the values. The panels of the Kerto Concept Facade System for curtain walls are made of dimensionally stable Kerto-Q veneer laminated wood panels. Due to the large size panels, Kerto Concept facade claddings can be adapted to individual architectural requirements with a minimum of waste. The panels are available in thicknesses of 21 or 24 mm at dimensions of a maximum of 1.82 x 20.0 m. From 27 mm of panel strength onward, an additional width of 2.5 m is available. Based on these premises, virtually all facade design requirements can be implemented. Elegant and perfectly protected. Kerto, with its special aesthetics, is lastingly protected from harmful environmental influences by its treatment. The Kerto Concept components for facade cladding can be supplied in two different versions pressure treated, whenever natural greying of the wood-based material is desired, or durable coated to obtain a surface with 10-year guarantee on its optical appearance. Long-lasting and naturally ageing. The pressure treatment enables the use of Kerto for lasting facade cladding for projects that stress the natural aspect of the wooden surface. The impregnation process protects Kerto from wood-damaging fungi and insects. In addition, it prevents the penetration of moisture into the façade cladding and therefore offers weather protection for many years. Durable coating. The guaranteed durability of the coating, together with the natural charm of the Kerto wood veneer, brings unlimited architectural possibilities. Beside the beautiful wooden surface, the advantage of the durable coating is in its excellent diffusivity. Manifold colour choice. For the implementation of individual design ideas, there are ten colour tones available for durable coating. Each colour tone reinforces the natural wood grain appearance in interaction with its transparent coating. Natural wood character. Pressure treatment impregnation is the answer to the builders desire for a timber facade as natural as possible. In its new state, the wood grain displays a greenish tint. Increasing age and the influence of the weather lead to a change of appearance through the natural ageing process of wood. The new building of the educational institution was developed within the scope of the British school construction programme "Building Schools for Future BSF". The internal and external appearance of the building is characterised by the 3,000-m² Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick Facade with insulated wooden boxes which were lined on the exterior on-site. The quality of the facade had been so convincing that the walls, originally planned in concrete, were also implemented as a Kerto Concept Facade. For its design quality and the architecture with its elegant details, the school has received several awards in 2009: for instance the RIBA and the BCSE Award. For one year, already, the Architects Journal has been calling the building nothing less than the school of the decade! The building, made from cross laminated timber panels, is concluded to the south with a light flooded Kerto Concept Mullion / Stick costruction with large-scale glass surfaces. This means optimum heat yield. The low energy standard is also achieved by the high insulating quality of the Leno CLT system also made by Finnforest Merk. The special warm character as well as the haptics of the laminated-veneer-timber Kerto stamp characterise the pleasantly casy atmosphere. The open, clear rooms of the glass foyer form a harmonious overall impression together with the science rooms equipped with Kerto Concept Facade Cladding. The appearance of the facade cladding is characterised, on the one hand, by the steel frame windows that intermittently perforate the cubic building volumes. On the other hand, the structure of the differently sized Kerto Concept panels underlines the ease and the playful element of the facade. Those panels are lastingly protected against adverse environmental influences. Thus the natural character of the bright wood colour tone remains preserved over many years. Reichhardt, Essen Construction period: 1997 Façade surface: 4,400 m 2 Villeroy and Boch High-bay warehouse It was a special challenge for the architect to design a high-bay warehouse of 25 m height, 99 m length and 39 m width as a functional structure, which would emit an air of dignity and grandeur like the old tobacco store houses. The building was meant to underline the brand values of Villeroy&Boch and turn the functionality of the fascinating storage machine into something that could be experienced. This was how the gigantic "wooden box" came into being, visible from afar - a steel framework with a facade shell made of timber and glass. The facade cladding was accomplished of 39 mm thick, vertically running panels from pressure treated laminated veneer lumber Kerto-Q. In order to emphasise the naturally ageing wood character of the facade, the 0.80 x 20.5 m sized Kerto-Q panels were purposely not surface sorted. The natural ageing process is responsible for the fact that the Kerto Concept Facade Cladding turns greyish-brown.
