This handbook provides safety guidelines, instructions, maintenance requirements and parts listings. We recommend that you read the entire handbook, before operating the machine as this will enable you to take full advantage of your new machine s considerable potential. Delivery and Warranty Before you begin to use your machine, please check it to make sure there is no delivery damage. If damage is evident, contact the dealer who supplied the machine so that they can make the appropriate claims. If you have any other queries, please contact your dealer or Giltrap Engineering Ltd ( GILTRAP). All Giltrap products are covered by a 12-month warranty on parts and labour, subject to normal use. 5 Page 5 Setup Instructions Hydraulics Most tractors today are fitted with remote hydraulic pressure and return outlets at the rear. If your tractor is not fitted up as such, contact your local tractor dealer for a conversion kit. It is important to procure the correct and same brand type of quick release coupling ends to suit your tractor couplings as some brands of couplings have different spring tension within the coupling which may impede full oil flow - it pays to check this. Hose ends fitted are 1/2" B.S.P.T. Male. Screw the coupling on to the feeder hoses using thread tape. For future quick reference, mark the pressure coupling. IMPORTANT: DML feeders are fitted with the best type of oil drive motors available which will give years of trouble free usage, provided they are used with clean non-contaminated oil. To avoid costly damage to the motor and also to your tractor pump, ensure the oil used is of the recommended grade and is clean. It is advisable to drain and flush the hydraulic oil system within the tractor if this has not been done recently. 3-Point Linkage Type Fit bale forks to your tractor's 3 point system - place feeder on fairly level ground and adjust the top link so that forks are in parallel to the mounting tubes in the feeder. Loading Instructions (1) Spear bale approximately 150mm (6") above the ground. CAUTION: Insert both prongs fully into the bale before lifting as damage may occur if used to lift loads on ends of prongs. (2) Load bale into feeder - Insert fork prongs into feeder frame tubes - MAKING SURE THE LOCKING CATCH IS FULLY LOCKED IN. - If motor drive dog is not fully engaged, rotate motor slowly until it springs into full engaged position. (3) Cut and remove all twine before feeding out. This is more easily done by cutting all the twine at the chain side, and pulling through from the opposite side.
6 Page 6 Operating and Feed Adjustments There are more than 14 different makes and models of round balers on the market. They all have their particular method of rolling up haylage etc. The two basic methods are a soft centred type and the tight centred type. Also there are dozens of types of fodder that can be baled and this varies in different parts of the country. On top of this there are many ways farmers and contractors have of windrowing prior to baling - speed of baling - density of bales - and conditioning etc. - and also how the bales are stored or stacked. Because of the numerous combinations of bale types possible, some of which may cause some feed-out problems. Most feed-out problems occur in the first seasons baling. Either through incorrect windrowing prior to baling Baling at a speed too slow for the size of the windrow Hay being out of condition when baled Baler density controls set wrong for the moisture level of the crop etc. Feed Chain The patented system of a semi floating feed chain which allows a certain amount of flex to conform to the size and shape of the bale and allows maximum penetration of the hay tearing claws, also provision is made for overload to prevent damage to chain if by accident a bale was dropped into the bale feeder. Feed Bar Tooth Adjustment Numerous combinations of lengths, shapes, angle of curve and an arrangement of these have been tested, to arrive at the best average type to suit all bale types, but may require slight modification to suit your particular bale type. The bars that are now fitted have teeth of maximum length and set at the average angle (which measures approximately 30 to 33 mm forward at the tip from the vertical line from the back of the angle iron feed bar) to suit most average bale types. However, the angle can be altered to suit your particular bales if necessary. This can be quickly done by using a big crescent spanner to hold the angle feed bar - and a length of 15 mm (1/2") diameter pipe over the claw. Note: Only bend claws one way or the other in 5 mm steps until the desired feed-out is obtained. The approximate maximum forward curve angle is 40 to 45 mm, as more than this the bale may sit on the top of the curve and not penetrate the wrap. Firstly start feeding out a bale, watching to see if the fodder falls cleanly off the tearing
7 Page 7 claws and is not being carried under the feeder in big amounts. If this occurs straighten out the claws approximately 5 mm or more until a clean fall off occurs, especially on silage - it pays to feed out a least 2 bales before altering again, as bales can vary. On some tightly wrapped bale types the claws may have to be bent forward slightly more if the claws are letting go of the wrap. When re-bending claws, bend from near the midway of spike, not down by the feed bar, as too much ending at one point will break off the claw. Possible Feeding Problems and Remedies There are very few feed out problems with the DML type feeders, however if problems are encountered on your bale type, a close inspection on what is happening when tearing claws leave the bale or a check under the bale for claw penetration will reveal the cause - this is usually one of four things. The claw angle may be wrong - if so bend claws to suit. On tight and thinly wrapped bales the claws may be penetrating two wraps at once - try bending the claws to a position where they will not penetrate so far or will pull free off one wrap as they leave the bale - or grind off points of claws. If claws are not penetrating the bale or core - claw entry angle into bale and adjust - OR sharpen claws. If feed-out is too heavy - especially on loosely pressed bales - e.g. for sheep feeding or on some soft centred bales, load bale into feeder unit with the wrap in opposite direction to feeder chain travel. Straighten out feed tearing claws. Feeding Baled Silage The DML Bale feeders are very efficient for feeding out baled silage. The tooth angle adjustment is the same for hay. Occasionally there has been trouble encountered in feeding out some types of silage, (mainly on the large soft centred bale types) that have gone out of condition, are wet or if the stalk length is extra long. Problem: The teeth pull off the silage and carry it over the feed side tube without the wrap separating, hence stalling out the oil motor, and in some cases bending the feed bars. Remedy: First straighten out the feed teeth to almost straight. If trouble still persists, (especially on very wet bales) reverse the feed chain on the machine so the teeth are facing opposite to feed out direction. Premature Bale Core Ejection DML feeders are better than most feeders at retaining the core down to an edible size. However, if large easily feed cores are ejected try Inching the feed Straighten the feed claws more Shorten the teeth down to approximately 55 mm above top of feed bar.
8 Page 8 Maintenance The DML Bale Feeder is designed for minimal maintenance. Greasing Generally this is only required on a monthly basis. Feed Chain Check frequently and clean out any build up of debris between the chain links under feed bars. Straighten any bent feed bars and teeth. Models fitted with 3" pitch chain (May 1988 onwards) These chains should not require adjustment; however, if this should become necessary a spacer pad is on the underside of the RHS member that supports the top chain sprockets - place this spacer under the idler sprocket mounts. Extra spacers are available if required. Before Storing Clean off any debris etc and wash down and let dry. CAUTION - When hosing the machine down. Don t direct water into any bearings or ram breather, especially if using a water blaster. Grease both sprocket shaft bearings. NOTE: use only light pressure on grease gun, so not to blow out the bearing seals. Oil fork catch and remove chain cover and oil drive chain. Apply old engine oil to both feed chains (Note: - These chains don't require oiling during the period of use). Adjust chains if necessary. Inspect motor drive pins for wear - if necessary build up with a hard facing rod. - (Attach the earth lead to the coupling).
9 Page 9 General Safety For the safety of others and yourself, please read and follow the precautions in this operator s manual. Pay particular attention to the following safety aspects of operating machinery. Do not ride on or allow passengers on the machine. Always use a recognised hitch pin with a safety clip to hook trailed implements on behind the tractor. When pulling trailed implements or loads, be sure to use a tractor of greater or equal weight than the combined weight of the load and trailer.
10 Page 10 Carry a suitable fire extinguisher. A fire can ignite under certain conditions, so please take the following precautions: After running your machine for a short time, check for defective bearings. A faulty bearing can become very hot, eventually discolouring, requiring immediate replacement. Do not allow combustible material to accumulate inside guards or around rollers and other moving parts. If your machine becomes blocked, stop immediately and remove the obstruction. Be careful when operating in hot or dry conditions or on extreme fire risk days. Never operate your machine without the safety guards in place. All chains should be properly adjusted and replaced when necessary.
11 Page 11 Release all hydraulic pressure from implements before commencing service work. Never look for suspected oil leaks with your hands or body - use a piece of cardboard instead. Any fluid which penetrates the skin will have to be removed immediately by a medical expert. Seek specialist advice on this type of injury. Never attempt to unblock equipment while it is still operating. Always disengage power take-off, hydraulics and shut down engine before removing materials, checking or servicing. Failure to follow these precautions is likely to result in serious injury. Ensure that your PTO shaft is adequately guarded. Do not attempt to use a driveshaft without a cover. Wear proper protective clothing. Loose attire can easily be snagged by rotating machinery resulting in serious injury or death.
