1 SECTION INSULATED WIRE AND CABLE PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 DESCRIPTION A. This section covers the contract item Insulated Wire and Cable, which includes the following items with accessories, and appurtenances: 1. Wire for lighting. 2. Various types of insulated cables as follows: a. Low voltage power cable. b. Control cable. c. Instrumentation cable RELATED SECTIONS A. Supplementary General Conditions, General Conditions, Division 1 sections, and Drawings apply to this section. This section may require direct correlation with the following sections of the contract: 1. Section Basic Electrical Materials and Methods. 2. Section Raceways and Boxes. 3. Section Wiring Devices. 4. Section Electrical Utility Services. 5. Section Panelboard. 6. Section Lighting REFERENCES A. The following publications form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. Application of these publications shall conform to Document Interpretation of the Contract, Paragraph 2: 1. American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). 2. Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA) N-10
2 3. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). 4. National Electrical Code (NEC). 5. California Electric Code (CEC) SUBMITTALS A. Submit product catalog data. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 LIGHTING WIRE A. Lighting wire shall be 600 volt, Type THW-VW-1 for wet and dry locations. 1. Lighting wire for branch circuits shall be No. 12 AWG, solid, annealed copper. 2. Feeder circuits shall be sized as shown. 3. Insulated wire for lighting of the various sizes includes the following: a. Furnishing and installing wire. b. Grips. c. Crimp type terminal lugs. d. Wire markers. e. Connections. f. Testing. 4. Color coding shall be as specified in Section Lighting LOW VOLTAGE POWER CABLE A. General: Low voltage power cable shall be single or multiconductor and of the sizes shown. Power cable shall be rated 600 volts, suitable for use in dry locations at conductor temperatures not exceeding 90 degrees C or in wet conditions at conductor temperatures not exceeding 75 degrees C. B. Multiconductor cable shall be UL listed Type TC tray cable with a flame retardant, moisture resistant, neoprene or XLPE or CPE jacket. The jacket thickness in mils shall be not less than 45 for AWG sizes No N-10
3 and 10, 60 for AWG sizes No. 8 and 6, 80 for sizes No. 4 through No. 4/0, and 110 for 250 kcmil and larger. C. The individual conductors for single and multiconductor cables shall be copper conforming to ASTM B 8 with Class B stranding. Stranding shall be not less than 7 strands for AWG size No. 2 and smaller, 19 strands for AWG sizes No. 1 through No. 4/0, and 37 strands for 250 kcmil and larger. D. Conductor insulation shall be Type XHHW VW-1. The insulation thickness in mils shall be not less than 30 for AWG size No. 10 and smaller, 45 for AWG size No. 8 through No. 2, 55 for AWG size No. 1 through No. 4/0, and 65 for 250 kcmil through 500 kcmil CONTROL CABLE A. General: Control cable shall be single or multiconductor cable of the sizes and number of conductors shown. Conductors shall be 19 strand copper. B. Control cable shall be rated 600 volts, suitable for use in dry conditions at conductor temperatures not exceeding 90 degrees C or in wet conditions at temperatures not exceeding 75 degrees C. C. Control cable shall be UL listed Type TC tray cable with a flame retardant, moisture resistant, neoprene or hypalon jacket. 1. Jacket thickness in mils for AWG size No. 10 shall be not less than 45 for 2 and 3 conductors, 60 for 4 through 9 conductors, and 80 for 10 or more conductors. 2. The jacket thickness in mils for AWG sizes No. 12 and No. 14 shall be not less than 45 for 2 through 4 conductors, 60 for 5 through 12 conductors, and 80 for 13 through 16 conductors. 3. The jacket thickness in mils for AWG size No. 16 shall be not less than 45 for 2 through 8 conductors, and 60 for 9 through 16 conductors. D. Conductor insulation shall be Type XHHW/XHHW-2 VW-1 not less than 30 mils thick INSTRUMENTATION CABLE A. General: Instrumentation cable shall be Type I, Type II, Type III, or Type IV. 1. Type I cable shall be a single, shielded twisted pair cable N-10
4 2. Type II cable shall be multiple, shielded twisted pair, shielded cable (TSP). This cable shall be used for analog signals. 3. Type III cable shall be multiple nonshielded twisted pair, shielded cable (TPS). 4. Type IV cable shall be multiple, shielded twisted triad, shielded cable. B. Conductors shall be No. 16, AWG, insulated, soft annealed copper, Class B, rated 600 volts, and 90 degrees C conductor temperature. C. The cable shall be UL listed as Type TC tray cable with flame retardant jacket per UL D. Pair, triad, and overall shields shall be aluminum-polyester tape overlapped to provide 100 percent coverage. Cables shall have a 7 strand tinned copper drain wire ACCESSORIES A. The accessories include, but are not limited to: wire mesh cable grips; pre-insulated, ring tongue lugs as specified in Section Basic Electrical Materials and Methods, crimp type, terminal connectors; wire and cable marker sleeves; supports; nuts; bolts; and washers; as required for conductor terminations. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSTALLATION A. General: Cables shall be installed in conduits and cable trays as shown and as scheduled. 1. Splices shall be made only at junction boxes, outlets, panelboards, and cabinets. 2. Cables shall be tied at terminations. Sufficient length shall be left at ends of wires and cables to make connections conveniently to equipment and devices. Spare conductors in multiconductor cables shall be the same lengths as the longest terminated conductor and shall be neatly coiled and identified with an approved label for future use N-10
5 B. Pulling Methods: 1. Where cables are laid on the floor before pulling into conduits or placing in trays, the floor shall be covered with heavy building paper or other protective material. 2. A clean tight fitting rag shall be pulled through the conduit immediately before installing cables. 3. Cables shall be clean before entering conduits and installed so that insulation or protective coverings will not be cut or abraded. 4. Cables shall be installed without kinks. 5. Pulling stresses on wire and cable shall not exceed the maximum permitted by the manufacturer. 6. Lubricant used for installing wire or cable shall be as approved. C. Terminations: Conductor terminations shall be made to: 1. Equipment furnished and installed under this contract. 2. Department furnished equipment. 3. Terminations shall be made as specified in Section Basic Electrical Materials and Methods. D. Wires and cables shall be marked at each end with typed or heat imprinted, one-piece heat-shrink plastic sleeves. Cable designations shall be as shown. The wire designations shall be marked on the terminal block marking strips with permanent marking fluid FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Actual lengths of wires and cables installed and terminated shall be entered on the cable schedules and verified by the Engineer. B. The Contractor shall perform field tests as directed. PART 4 PAYMENT 4.01 PAYMENT A. The contract price will be paid for INSULATED WIRE AND CABLE; which price shall include full compensation for all costs incurred under this section. END OF SECTION N-10
