7 STRUDES provided engineering services to Lafarge Canada Inc. in a major modernization of their Richmond, British Columbia Plant. The new complex, with a cement production capacity of 1,000,000 TPY and which includes a five stage preheater-precalciner and kiln line, was constructed to replace the outdated wet process plant. This project started up in May 1999 and reached the designed capacity in less than one month.

8 The Bell Centre - Home of the Montreal Canadiens In order to meet the economic challenges of professional hockey ownership, the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club has replaced the venerable Montreal Forum with a new arena, the Molson Centre, located in the heart of downtown Montreal. The selection of a double tier truss system, a roof system proposed by STRUDES Inc., provided the required stiffness, an unobstructed technical grid area and a reduction of steel weight, resulting in a substantial savings over the original proposal. The arena roof is oval in plan, spanning 133.6m x 98.2m to thirty six peripheral reinforced concrete columns. In addition to the roof deck, snow loading and mechanical and electrical building services, the roof structure also supports a system of walkways, the press gallery and most significantly, a 400 tonne technical floor grid for theatrical prop support, and the Jumbotron central scoreboard. The system was awarded a Prize of Excellence for Construction in Steel by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.

This 400,000 ton capacity storage unit constructed for Lafarge s Alpena Michigan Cement plant can accommodate six football fields. The A type storage is 674 ft long, 311 ft wide and 120 ft high. The clinker is delivered by a pan conveyor and distributed by a tripper conveyor. The reclaim tunnel, constructed beneath the pile, accommodates a belt conveyor which transfers the clinker to a grinding mill.

At Lafarge s Davenport Plant in Iowa, the cement was previously pumped to silos via pneumatic lines at considerable electric power input and complicated, manual valve distribution for each silo. The new system designed by STRUDES includes belt conveyors and air gravity conveyors with automatic valve controls. This new system eliminates manual distribution on top of silos and instead is operated from the central control room. STRUDES has designed many other improvements at this plant. At the Lafarge Calcium Aluminates Plant in Chesapeake, Virginia, STRUDES engineers were challenged by poor soil conditions, a very high water table, the site being located on a previously demolished factory, and in a very congested area. STRUDES designed a pile supported reinforced concrete structure to support the elevated heavy silos and a steel structure for the packaging and warehouse area. Erection was expedited with the aid of prefabricated steel silos.

The flyash is delivered by rail car and transferred by means of a pneumatic system to a 40,000 tonne dome storage facility. The taconite is delivered by self-unloading ships through the transfer tower whose electrically operated doors allow the ship s boom to unload material in a dust free environment. Lafarge Canada s St. Constant Plant in Quebec required the opening of a new quarry as resources at their existing site were being exhausted. Strudes engineers were able to satisfy their customer s needs by completing the project on schedule, within budget, and without interrupting plant operations. The close proximity of a housing development to the Lafarge Canada Exshaw Plant in Alberta dictated the replacement of the existing stack with a much taller 90 m reinforced concrete stack able to disperse gases at a higher elevation. An insulated steel flue was installed inside the concrete shell. Construction was carried out during regular hours without interruption to plant operations, and the switch-over from the existing stack to the new one was performed during the regularly scheduled maintenance of the kiln. STRUDES assisted in many other projects at the Exshaw Plant including new high efficiency separators, a new homo silo, partition of a cement silo and a complex of cement storage silos. At time of publication Strudes is designing coal handling, storage and firing system as en alternate fuel for two kilns.

17 When walls in the high density tank collapsed during routine emptying of the liquid at the Donohue Pulp Kraft Mill in St. Felicien, Quebec, Strudes engineers were on site the next day (Sunday) and quickly came up with a solution for securing of the tank and the subsequent removal of a very expensive and long delivery defuser located at the top of the tank. Work was performed around the clock, the tank was rebuilt and the defuser reinstalled at a substantial savings to the owner. The bypass dedusting project at Essroc s Picton Cement Plant was a turn-key supply. The bag house equipment was installed by the supplier. Strudes engineers have coordinated and designed the necessary foundations and tie-ups with the existing equipment and structures. Increased demand for steel products lead to a decision to reopen Sidbec Dosco s Furnace No. 2, which was forced to close ten years ago. However, the economic circumstances which led to the closure made improvements in the material handling equipment necessary. As time was of the essence, STRUDES experience in retrofits was put to the test. The existing structures and equipment were surveyed, evaluated, and improvements made in the allotted time.

Incoming barges, loaded with cement, moved along the stationary barge to meet the arm of the unloader, where the cement was conveyed by a piping system to the silos located on the shore.

18 Lafarge s cement terminal in Pittsburgh, Pa., capitalized on it s proximity to the Ohio River, which offered a much more economical means of transportation than the existing rail system. Fluctuation of the water level of the river was overcome with the renovation of a second hand barge whose deck, equipped with pneumatic unloading equipment, rose and fell along with the water level. Incoming barges, loaded with cement, moved along the stationary barge to meet the arm of the unloader, where the cement was conveyed by a piping system to the silos located on the shore. The crane mounted on the deck also facilitated the removal of the cement barge s covers as well as for the lowering of a small bobcat for final cleaning of the cement barges. Technological improvements in the metallurgical industry led our client, Wolverine Tubes, to install four new casting lines in their factory in Montreal, Quebec. As the most was to be made of the existing facilities, and with the complexity of working in a very confined area with limited access for heavy equipment, a great deal of ingenuity and expertise was demanded of our engineering staff to execute the project on time and on budget.
