1 THE BUILDERS CHOICE South Metropolitan TAFE SOUTH METROPOLITAN TAFE PHOTOS ARISE DIGITAL THE EYE-CATCHING FAÇADE South Metropolitan TAFE showcasing EMCO's skills in the education sector As the academic year got underway at South Metropolitan TAFE in late January, students and staff discovered that their facility was anything but the same old TAFE. The tertiary institution is now housed in a brand-new building, constructed in Murdoch by EMCO Building. The outstanding facility perfectly showcases EMCO's significant expertise in the education sector, built up over many years on projects throughout Perth and regional Western Australia. The project reached practical completion in November 2017, in time for the arrival of the 2,000-plus students who study a wide variety of courses at the campus. THE TEAM Phone: Phone: From first glance, it is apparent that the 11,500 sq. m building, built at a cost of $43 million, is a world away from what many people picture when thinking of a TAFE building. Without a doubt, the most eye-catching feature and the first thing visitors will notice when they approach the building is the distinctive suspended façade. It not only adds visual appeal, it was designed by architects Armstrong Parkin Architects to serve as a shade screen across the northern face of the building. The façade is constructed of fibre reinforced concrete panels, utilising an innovative technique to minimise weight. Without traditional reinforcing, the structure's weight has been reduced by at least 20 per cent. It is cantilevered and hung from the building's second and third floor slabs. 62 The Builders Choice Magazine March 2018

3 THE BUILDERS CHOICE South Metropolitan TAFE As EMCO Building's CEO Ron Keogh explains, the feature provided one of the biggest structural challenges for the project, and was the subject of considerable discussions during the planning stages particularly in terms of how to minimise the risks involved in having such a large structure attached to the front of the building. The installation process took a couple of weeks and was quite a meticulous operation. It came in segmented pieces which were lifted into position by crane, and bolted to the supporting structure. It's a bit like a giant meccano set. It certainly gives it that 'wow' factor when you arrive. The new training and administration building for South Metropolitan TAFE, formerly known as Challenger Institute of Technology, includes facilities for the teaching of a wide range of courses, from hairdressing, massage, beauty, nutrition and fitness, community studies and early childhood to information technology, business and management. The ground floor of the new building contains specialist training facilities, including eight hairdressing and beauty salons, a gymnasium and a simulated office, a library, cafe, and student amenities and student services areas. The first floor contains further general and specialist training facilities including a virtual nursery and playgroup, computer laboratories and learning areas, while on the second floor are staff offices, meeting rooms and amenities areas including a large balcony. The success of the project is in no small part a result of the very close working relationship that developed between the EMCO Building team, Armstrong Parkin Architects, and the client. Stepping inside, one of the first things students see is the magnificent, broad ironbark staircase that links all levels of the building. The balustrade was wrapped in Baresque, an acrylic product which was used throughout the building, featuring in the cabinetry in several of the reception areas and teaching facilities. Timber, including Western red cedar, has also been used extensively throughout, most notably featuring in the soaring ceilings in the entry foyer. Site access, which was very restricted due to the location and the extensive footprint of the development, created a number of challenges for the team. Prior to the commencement of structural works on the building, the project required approx. 26,000 m3 of clean fill to be imported 64 The Builders Choice Magazine March 2018

The South Metropolitan TAFE building which stretches more than 120 metres in length is one of EMCO's largest projects in the education sector.
