John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project July 2016 Community Construction Update Report #37 Prepared by: Stephen Watson, BC Hydro (O) or (C)
Project Status Powerhouse cavern. Forming and concrete work underway for the water intake maintenance gate; The 60 metre power tunnel intake shaft (downstream of dam) is complete. Work progressing on the elbow that will connect to the horizontal section of the power tunnel; About 420 metres of the 1,575 metre power tunnel is completed with progress continuing toward the dam; Surge shaft boring just beginning using a raised bore method working from the bottom of the shaft to top. This shaft will be 110 metres deep; About 15% of Phase 1 concrete work complete in the powerhouse. The first phase is structural work, and the second is embedding the turbine and the base of the generator; Main access tunnel will reach the powerhouse by August; About 15% of the 520 metre tailrace tunnel has been excavated; and Special thanks to the 1,100 people who took in the project advancements by bus and the 1,600 people overall who participated in the July 17 annual John Hart project community site event! Unit 3
Project Schedule September: Surge shaft boring (from bottom) completed; October: Concrete surface structure for surge tank begins; November: Maintenance gate at upstream side of dam installed; and January: Excavate under the existing John Hart dam. Underground equipment on display at the July 17 John Hart project community site event.

Construction Pictures Cofferdam Area Operating maintenance gate and trash rack works. 5
Construction Pictures Downstream Work Area Below John Hart Dam Area The opening of the power tunnel intake shaft (shown on left) drops down 60 metres into an elbow (shown below) connecting to the horizontal section of the power tunnel. When complete water will drop down the shaft and flow through the tunnel to eventually spin the turbines within the underground powerhouse. In the diagram below, the various numbered sections show future blast areas. 6
Construction Pictures Power Tunnel 7
Construction Pictures Surge Tank Area 8 The existing three white surge towers will be replaced by one mostly underground surge tank. To create the shaft that will provide the same service the towers do, a test hole was drilled downward to join up with the underground power tunnel. Boring equipment was then attached to the drill shaft and has begun to remove the rock upwards.

Construction Pictures Powerhouse Cavern Did You Know? The powerhouse cavern rock excavation took 13 months to complete (May 2016), with 485 blasts to remove 60,000 cubic metres of rock enough rock to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 24 times. 12
Construction Pictures Main Access Tunnel 13 The 6 metre by 9 metre main access tunnel is almost complete.

Environment Update The heat of the summer is welcomed by many including the project s environmental team who see their own unique challenges and opportunities this time of year. Temporary Home: Swallows made nests in some site equipment recently a crane at the tailrace and in lock-blocks at another site. The equipment can t be moved while there are nests and they are regularly monitored by the project s environment team. The birds have now fledged the nests but diligent monitoring continues. Twenty-minute flood: While winter requires regular, ongoing management of rain, managing summer downpours requires adaptations to mitigation measures. A short downpour back in May after a period of dry weather highlighted the need for additional swales and pumps to ensure sediment doesn t reach the river. The new plans are in place and working well. New faces: A summer co-op student has joined the environment team: Mackenzie Kwaksistala is a 4th-year biology student at University of Victoria and will work with the environmental team for July and August helping with monitoring and day-to-day management on site. Mackenzie is originally from Campbell River and is a member of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation. 19
People Profile Jennie Gagnon About Jennie Background: Jennie s professional career has centered on accounts payable and receivable, and collections, for a range of companies including some in property management, trucking and mining sectors. Home: Born in Quebec, Jennie graduated high school in Winnipeg. Mining has always been a big part of her family, and that work took her from Quebec to Manitoba, Northern Ontario to Yellowknife and onto Campbell River in 2000 when her husband started at Myra Falls. With eight grandkids now living here too, Campbell River is her home. Hobbies: Along with shopping and baking, Jennie is an avid walker, covering kilometres each day. She s also a sports fan: hockey and the Blue Jays but her favorite athletes are her grandchildren who she watches regularly. One grandson is currently playing on the ASL-JV Dambusters baseball team, who won the Island Championship and are heading to Kelowna for the Provincials. Sharing laughs with friends and family is key as well. Project Responsibility: As Accounts Payable Clerk for ASL-JV, Jennie and her co-workers ensure that suppliers are paid in a timely manner. When she says the cheque s in the mail it s the truth; she really does mail them! She also helps keep the office running booking flights for team members and keeping the office supplies stocked. The John Hart project is huge for a city like Campbell River and it makes me proud to be a part of it!
Construction Point Of Interest Each month, BC Hydro and InPower BC will provide a construction fact, occurrence, or situation. Off-site Manufacturing. There is a lot of important work happening in Campbell River and also around the globe. Some of the key components to be manufactured are currently being built in far away places, in preparation to arrive as soon as the local site is ready for them to be installed: Parts of the three turbine/generators by GE (formally Alstom) are being fabricated in Quebec, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic and China; Before manufacturing in other countries, representatives from the project visited and assessed the manufacturing facilities to ensure they were operating at required standards; The individual spiral case and stay assembly ring for each of the three generating units are expected to arrive in September, October and November Inlet valves will follow in the spring of All permanent parts will be at site by end of summer 2017; and Timing of delivery has to be coordinated with the progress of the powerhouse concrete work. Permanent parts have to arrive and be moved underground right away.
