3 Agenda Building Information Modeling 1 1 Introduction 1.1 Background The term Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used to denote the digital representation of a building and its functions on the basis of continuously updated data. It creates a reliable data basis for all parties involved in the planning, implementation and management of construction projects throughout the life cycle of a building, i. e. from the early design conception to the demolition stage. All relevant building data are recorded digitally, combined and cross-linked using construction-specific software solutions. Visualisation of the virtual building is just one aspect. Moreover, continuous processing and immediate availability of a common data basis allow for increased productivity of the planning and construction processes and facility management in terms of costs, schedules and quality. Already in the near future, the use of BIM will have become a matter of course, particularly in larger-scale construction projects. Both the planners and executing companies and the owners and operators of buildings and structures will have to deal with the issue in depth also to secure their own benefit from the BIM application, for all parties involved can profit eventually. In Germany, the BIM issue is treated rather marginally compared to the global community. The tools and the knowledge may well be available. However, the use of BIM is hindered by, for instance, the following circumstances: Terms are not defined clearly or are used differently. Data management and data rights are not transparent. Interfaces are not described. Responsibilities are not clarified. So far, the BIM issue has been discussed in many places. However, there was no common, neutral platform to bundle existing activities, to enable exchange among the disciplines involved and to give them a joint voice on the issue. Establishing rules and standardising processes and procedures facilitates work and communication in business and science. Standards and rules are the language of engineering and serve to harmonise requirements regarding material and immaterial goods. In this way, they create comparability and facilitate market penetration, for the exchange of goods and services within a global trade network only works with common standards. 1.2 The VDI as a standardising body The VDI is Europe s largest technical-scientific association and one of the major standardising bodies in Germany. With currently more than 2,000 VDI Standards in force, the VDI issues generally acknowledged technical rules providing evaluation and assessment criteria and methodological fundamentals for almost any branch of industry, and gives specific practical guidance applicable even across borders. Issues addressed range from architecture, waste management and civil engineering to bionics, material substitution and reliability. VDI Standards are deemed acknowledged rules of technology, i. e. technical specifications which are considered by a majority of experts to reflect the state of the art. As a rule, they are published as bilingual editions (German and English), thereby also attracting international attention. The members of the vast network of VDI experts from science, industry and public administration develop VDI Standards on an honorary basis and in an interdisciplinary dialogue. In doing so, each Standard Committee follows the current international standardisation process. This also creates the basis for the submission of German positions to international standardising bodies. In this context, it is crucial for successful positioning of the German construction industry that the positive effects of standardisation and harmonisation be integrated from the early stages of the development process. 1.3 Why a BIM Agenda? The diverse valuable work already done as well as new activities need to be coordinated based on the demand and with a clear perspective in mind. The VDI assumes the task of providing the national normative framework. Answers are scarce even to the simple questions on BIM:

4 2 Agenda Building Information Modeling What does BIM mean? To whom is it relevant? Who owns which part of the common digital model, and when? In principle, there is consensus among the construction industry, the software producers and science about the future importance of the issue. However, there is a lack of acknowledged rules of technology which pave the way for the application, and a neutral voice which represents the jointly agreed opinions on the issue vis-à-vis politicians and all interested parties. One task of the VDI BIM Coordination Group is to voice the engineers views. In this context, the VDI considers standardisation to be the most important brick in establishing BIM, enabling companies to take action and making them internationally competitive, and implementing new approaches to manage complex construction projects.

5 Agenda Building Information Modeling 3 2 Standardisation Strategy 2.1 VDI BIM Coordination Group The VDI Society Civil Engineering and Building Services (VDI-GBG) has formed a Coordination Group on Building Information Modeling (VD BIM Coordination Group) in order to establish BIM in the German construction industry. The first meetings of the Coordination Group were held in late Professor Rasso Steinmann (Head of Institute iabi Institute of Applied Building Informatics at Munich University) was elected chairman; Dirk Schaper (HOCHTIEF ViCon GmbH) and Siggi Wernik (buildingsmart e.v.) are the vice chairmen. Furthermore, the VDI BIM Coordination Group is made up of representatives from all disciplines embraced by the VDI-GBG (architecture, building physics, civil engineering, building services and facility management) as well as representatives from branchspecific organisations, associations and initiatives, representatives of the teaching profession, experts from software producers and engineering companies as well as building owner representatives and BIM experts from the construction industry. Currently, the VDI relies on more than 70 experts who are dealing with the BIM issue in an honorary capacity. BIM is an interdisciplinary issue (Figure 1) in which all parties involved in the planning, construction and operation of buildings and structures are to take part. Within the VDI-GBG, all parties involved in construction can make their contributions and represent their interests. During the first meetings, the VDI BIM Coordination Group specified its short- and medium-term goals and launched the implementation of these goals. Specific standardisation projects were identified and the pertinent working groups were founded, which took up their work in First draft standards will be available in One of the main tasks of the VDI BIM Coordination Group will focus on formulating statements and recommendations to politicians and the relevant decision-makers. Also for this task, initial preparations have been made, which will be put in more specific terms in the course of upcoming meetings.

6 4 Agenda Building Information Modeling 2.2 Existing national and international rules and regulations In the international environment, a number of technical rules and regulations have already become established. Some international contractors, private and public, have already made application of BIM a mandatory requirement. National standards form the basis here. Also in Germany, there have already been several standardisation initiatives; however, no acknowledged rules of technology are available. The existing international rules and regulations are being reviewed and assessed by the VDI BIM Coordination Group inconsistencies between existing standards and the future VDI Standards are to be avoided. However, national standards are by all means required to give consideration to the German specifics in the planning, construction and operation of buildings and structures. This national standardisation, decisively driven by the VDI BIM Coordination Group, will be the foundation for the German position on the international standardisation (ISO) that will follow in the foreseeable future. A so-called mirror committee is needed to implement VDI Standards into international standardisation. This committee, whose secretariat will be held by DIN, will be founded in 2015.

7 Agenda Building Information Modeling 5 3 Areas of Application All VDI Standards to be issued on BIM shall focus on the following areas of application. Man Technology Processes General framework 3.1 Man Doubtlessly, the acting persons are the most important factor for the successful application of BIM. A clear definition of the responsibilities and roles is the first and, at the same time, one of the most decisive steps. In the drafting of standards, the VDI BIM Coordination Group will particularly address the following issues: Parties involved in BIM Roles and responsibilities Experience, knowledge and qualification of those involved Partnership Cooperation and communication 3.2 Technology Standards should describe the BIM technology in such a manner that at least the following aspects are standardised: Automation BIM Controlling (4D, 5D, progress report, claim management) Data exchange Data management 3.3 Processes BIM is a working method for the implementation of construction projects. The processes are crucial here. Standardisation work shall aim to consider, e. g., the following aspects: Requirements regarding planning and the procedure BIM model Data exchange Sustainability Data management Quality criteria for information, tender versus quotation Safety 3.4 General framework In addition to the areas of application described above, the general framework is an essential aspect for the successful application of BIM. Harmonisation with the existing regulations is needed here, for instance with the VOB (German Construction Tendering and Contract Regulations) and the HOAI (Official Scale of Fees for Services by Architects and Engineers). The following items need to be regulated: Tendering Terminology Intellectual property Common standards, formats, etc. Compliance with HOAI Responsibilities/liability Consistency between contracts Determination of quantities Variation studies Visualisation

8 6 Agenda Building Information Modeling 4 Roadmap for VDI BIM Standards 4.1 VDI 2552 series of standards Work on the first VDI BIM Standards has already begun. The draft standards are expected to be ratified by the respective committees in In the first step, the VDI BIM Coordination Group identified the standardisation projects listed below. Upon approval of the standardisation projects by the Civil Engineering Advisory Council, the respective committees have taken up their work in 2014: VDI 2552 Part 1 BIM Framework Standard VDI 2552 Part 2 BIM Terms and Definitions VDI 2552 Part 3 BIM Quantities/Controlling VDI 2552 Part 4 BIM Requirements regarding Data Exchange VDI 2552 Part 5 BIM Data Management VDI 2552 Part 6 BIM Requirements regarding Facility Management The VDI standardisation process with respect to BIM will remain highly dynamic. If you are interested in joining the VDI standardisation projects on Building Information Modeling, please contact the Secretariat of the VDI Society Civil Engineering and Building Services (/gbg). 4.2 VDI BIM Manual Initiating and managing new standardisation projects is not the only task of the VDI BIM Coordination Group. Furthermore, it shall also identify which of the existing VDI Standards are relevant to BIM and integrate them into a VDI BIM Manual to be published. Examples from the fields of the VDI-GBG include the following established standards/series of standards: VDI 3805 Product data exchange in the Building Services VDI 6027 Requirements for the data exchange of CAD systems; Building service equipment Experiences from other VDI Technical Divisions can be drawn on. For instance, the following issues are addressed in depth by the VDI Society Production and Logistics and the VDI/VDE Society Measurement and Automatic Control: Automation Industrie 4.0 Digital Manufactoring A VDI BIM Manual could ultimately have a structure (Figure 2) in which framework standards describe the fundamental normative framework and application standards and specific standards provide practical guidance on individual issues.

The VDI Verein Deutscher Ingenieure e.v. assumes this task. For more than 150 years, it has been the reliable partner on the engineers side. Each year, over 12,000 experts contribute their honorary work, dealing with the latest findings to promote our technological site. Compelling reasons: With a membership of about 154,000, the VDI is the largest association of engineers in Germany.
