The stone shall be spread in a 12 inch layer. 2. Spread the hydrogel evenly onto the stone, followed by a layer of moist soil. 3. Continue layering in this fashion if the front-end loader is large enough to mix the material effectively, up to a six-layer pile. 4. Mix and turn the pile until uniformly blended. Uniformly add moisture to assist mixing if the system is too dry, but do not exceed optimal moisture content for compaction as determined by testing. STRUCTURAL SOIL PLANTING MIX

10 E. Mixing is to occur with a front end loader or by hand on a flat, paved surface. 1. The hydrogel slurry shall be evenly spread onto the crushed stone before the soil is added. Mixing shall continue for a sufficient time, but not less than ten (10) minutes to assure the crushed stone is completely coated with the hydrogel slurry. 2. The soil shall be added to the crushed stone and slurry mixture in a manner that assures the resulting mix is free of clods. The mixing shall be controlled to assure over-mixing does not cause the material to become pelletized. F. The resulting Structural Soil Planting Mix (crushed stone, hydrogel and soil mixture) shall be protected from drying prior to placement. 3.3 PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION OF STRUCTURAL SOIL PLANTING MIX A. The Structural Soil Planting Mix shall be placed in locations as indicated on Plan(s). It shall be the contractor's responsibility to properly compact the mixture. The contractor shall determine the type, size and weight of compactor best suited to the work and select and control the lift thickness. The contractor shall also exert proper control over the moisture content of the mixture and other details necessary to obtain satisfactory results. B. The Architect and Owner s Representative will inspect the contractor's operations and will permit the work to continue where: 1. Lift thickness is controlled and is consistent with the compaction equipment selected. 2. The compactive effort is uniformly applied. 3. The Architect and Owner s Representative concludes from visual observation that proper compaction has been obtained. 4. Compaction and test density of the compacted material to meet or exceed 95% of Maximum Dry Density. C. Whenever the contractor's operations do not conform to the above criteria, the Owner s Representative will prohibit placement of additional material until the contractor takes corrective action. D. When the Owner s Representative determines density tests are necessary, the contractor shall provide any assistance required to facilitate such tests. Such assistance shall include, but will not be limited to, excavation and backfill of test holes. This work shall be considered to be incidental to construction. 3.4 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS A. The Architect will inspect the work upon the request of the Contractor. Request for inspection shall be received by the Architect at least 10 days before the anticipated date of inspection. 3.5 CLEANING A. Upon completion of the Structural Soil installation operations, clean areas within the contract limits. Remove all excess fills, soils and mix stockpiles and legally dispose of all waste materials, trash and debris. Remove all tools and equipment and provide a clean, clear site. Sweep, do not wash, all paving and other exposed surfaces of dirt and mud until the paving has been installed over the STRUCTURAL SOIL PLANTING MIX

11 Structural Soil material. Do no washing until finished materials covering Structural Soil material are in place. END OF SECTION STRUCTURAL SOIL PLANTING MIX
