Course Description: Architectural Glass & Metal Value and Sustainability This presentation was developed to provide decision makers and their influencers the value of partnering with an expert team that can provide current information on how architectural glass and metal systems can be utilized to provide quality of performance, cost effectiveness and energy and system efficiencies. 4
Learning Objectives At the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Understand how improper applications can result in mold and moisture damage to your building s appearance and value. 2. Understand the attributes of architectural glass and metal and how it enhances your buildings function. 3. Gain a more comprehensive understanding of how to avoid costly mistakes. 4. Understand initial and maintenance costs of architectural glass and metal. 5

Architectural Glass & Metal Sustainability 35
What is Sustainability? Reduced energy consumption (zero-energy buildings) Cradle-to-grave material and component assessment Optimal use of embodied energy in building materials Reduction of toxic emissions associated with production processes Minimization of the use of scarce, non-renewable natural resources Ability to recycle and reuse materials or components at the end of their useful life Well-being and safety of building occupants Improved thermal comfort Increased natural day-lighting in buildings (while minimizing glare) Enhanced interior air quality (ventilation, low toxic emissions, low volatile organic content) UV protection, explosion blast protection, etc. 36
What is Sustainable? Improved thermal insulation glazing (low-e coatings, gas-filling, vacuum glazing, etc.) Adaptable glazing (chromogenic, switchable ) Light diffusion glazing Double-layer façades Integration of photo-voltaic Innovative structural use of glass 37
Condensation The conversion of water from the vapor state to a denser liquid state usually initiated by a reduction in temperature of the vapor. 38
The Phenomenon of External Condensation If the heat loss of a window is low, the temperature of the outer surface is near outside air temperature, if lower than outside air temperature, this may cause condensation in external surface Visual inconvenience, no influence on durability of the window. 44 Energy Efficiency vs. RF Signals Higher level of energy-efficiency is one of the main targets for reducing the energy consumption of modern built environment The requirements are expected to further increase in the near future Baseline at EU-level: by 2021 all newly built houses need to be low-energy Construction materials (windows and panels) with metals and metal layers Widely known to be harmful for RF (radio frequency) signals and their propagation (Faraday s gage). Cellular mobile speech and data rely on radio signals Roughly 70-80% of mobile subscribers located indoors Problems with all calls from indoors (incl. emergency calls) 44
Details Architectural Glass & Metal Sloping roof Adjoining materials Grade 45
Movement Control Thermal Dissimilar materials 46
Structural Movement Glass is, however, vulnerable to forces applied to its edges and corners by rigid framing members. Forces from an earthquake cause the structure to drift, and in a typical curtain wall in which the framing is rigidly attached to the structure framing, the system deforms and the corners of the glass may impact the metal frame. Current techniques depend on the care of the field installer to ensure that adequate clearances are maintained, rather than using connection details that allow for movement of the curtain wall framing independent of the main building structure. 47
Component Movement The architect usually specifies minimum clearances. Detailing is critical. Clearances during installation are critical. Once the glazing is installed, inspection is virtually impossible. 48
Optical Distortion Most glass today is heattreated, invariably resulting in surface distortion. Roller wave Bowing Edge curl In U.S., not even a standard to control. Pillowing of IGUs is another common form of distortion. Coatings add a wildcard. Source: M. Patterson, Enclos 49
