1 Arena Stage: A Case Study Brought to Lifeto The Wood Products Council is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES), Provider #G516. Credit(s) earned on completion of this course will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-aia members are available upon request. This course is registered with AIA CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation. March 21, 2014 Brian Ackerman Bing Thom Architects g Gerry Epp Fast + Epp Course Description Learning Objectives In the sea of concrete and granite that t people have come to expect from buildings in Washington, D.C., a structure showcasing wood has broken new ground. Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater is the first building of its size to use heavy timber components in the U.S.Capital and first in the country to use a hybrid wood and glass enclosure to envelop two existing structures. t It is also believed to have the tallest free-standing timber-backed façade in the world. This combined workshop and tour will give participants p an in-depth understanding of the design, coordination, fabrication and construction of this unique project. The project architect and engineer will walk attendees through both the design process and the building itself, addressing topics such as acoustics, functionality and innovative curtain wall detailing. A panel discussion with the building inspector and general contractor will also help the audience understand how custom fabricated timber elements the design includes 18 parallel strand lumber columns, each measuring 45 to 63 feet can be successfully used in a project. 1. Discover how large timber elements can be incorporated into a curtain wall system to achieve both an effective thermal break and striking appeal. 2. Consider how preconceptions p about wood and fire can be overcome by applying fire engineering principles with the use of heavy timber, even in design of large interconnected public spaces. 3. Discover how wood finishes can help overcome acoustic challenges in acoustically sensitive environments. 4. Discuss the overall concept, design and construction of the Arena Stage project, including community impact, building functionality, development of design and fabrication of timber elements, and understand the process of taking a unique concept to fruition, including coordination, permit approvals, inspection and budgeting.
