As a result, the law now states that colour contrast is essential for visually impaired persons. Nosings need to extend the full width of the tread and be 55mm on both the tread & the riser. Everybody is entitled to safe access into any building. Nearly 24% of people in the UK today have some degree of vision loss, many of whom rely on colour and texture to remain mobile. Visible sight lines & edging strips, along with tactile plates (coloured red or buff) should be installed to mark crossing points, stairs or platform edges. Please contact ASTEP Technical to upgrade existing treads. The Health & Safety Executive estimates that stair injuries cost employers and the public sector over a billion pounds a year, not to mention the thousands of working hours lost. The average claim for stairway accidents is 7000, but has gone as high as 68,000. The right nosing needs the right insert to meet the correct need for foot traffic. All ASTEP edgings - gritted GRP, stainless steel, aluminium, brass and the Traverse & VTac ranges - should be considered to help clients provide the correct application to ensure maximum performance throughout its product life whether industrial, public or private sector. AGR!P APPLICATION The AGR!P range has been used extensively in Rail, Highway, Marine, Education, and Public Sector buildings, both internally and externally. Gritted treads with colourcontrasting nosings meet the regulation in new build and refurbished projects. You can expect specialist advice and technical support from our experienced team. Manufactured in three grit levels: C16: heavy grit used externally for rail, highways and industrial areas; C25: medium grit used internally in communal areas and inserts for aluminium tread sections; C40: barefoot grade used in swimming pool and other internal areas. ALUMINIUM, BRASS AND STAINLESS STEEL METAL TREADS ASTEP manufacture an exclusive range of high quality nosings in aluminium, brass and stainless steel to suit all stair substrates, floor finishes and foot traffic. ASTEP s current range of nosings are the result of years of extrusion development. The ASTEP range has been used extensively in both commercial and public sector buildings including healthcare and education. Light reflectance values (LRVs) and AFA guidelines are included in any proposal. AGR!P FLAT SHEETS AGR!P flat sheets can be used in a variety of applications including landings, bridge decks, walkways and ramps. AGR!P RANGE AGR!P products can be delivered to site in stock size sheets. Diamond saw blades and tungsten carbide drill bits are available to assist site fitting, complete with stainless fixings and adhesive. We supply cut to size and pre-drilled sheets if required. Used on new build and refurbishment projects, and available in a variety of colours, ASTEP can assist in budget take-off pricing, cutting to maximise sheet usage, and fixing recommendation to suit the substrates. AGR!P POLYURETHANE AGR!P polyurethane leveling screed provides an effective and convenient repair to existing steel or concrete structures.

5 P5 AFA INTERNAL RANGE INTERNAL RANGE THE CURRENT RANGE OF ASTEP ALUMINIUM AND BRASS CARRIERS ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF COMPONENT EXTRUSION DEVELOPMENT. THE INCLUSION OF GRITTED, SLIP RESISTANT GRP INSERTS MEETS THE NEED FOR RAPID PROBLEM SOLVING IN NEW BUILDINGS AND REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS. The range has been used extensively in both commercial and public sector buildings including healthcare and education. Light reflectance values (LRVs) and AFA guidelines can be incorporated into any design. Tactile Blister studs and Corduroy bars from the TT range can be used on smooth marble and polished floors, without the need for spoiling appearances, but upgrading to meet the needs of clients, but more importantly, meeting AFA requirements. Especially suited for large communal areas, bringing them rapidly up to date, with a contrasting nosing colour, to Approved Document M (effective on New Build, 2004) guidelines. Available with all ASTEP insert colours, including luminous and hazard. A choice of channel is available to suit all stair shapes, including double inserts and very heavy use (170 range). These can be mounted with resilient floor coverings but should be placed on top of the final layer. Developed for communal areas requiring more underfoot stability. Especially effective for upgrades to residential central stairs. 9 P9 INTERNAL LR INSTALLATION Offer up step nose, mark holes, remove edge, drill & plug Lay lino down. Put nosing on top. 3mm pack between riser face of stairs and back of nosing. Vertical face of nosing. Trim lino as normal with recommended tool. Remove packer and glue at indicated points. Position nosing & screw down. Ensure screws are flush. It is the original composition of rubber with added high friction, hard wearing properties. These inserts can be used in conjunction with terazzo, concrete, marble, stone or wood. It is adaptable in application as it can be set into steps at time of casting, bonded with adhesive into precut channels or screwed to the substrate. When inserted into ASTEP s range of Aluminium EX163T this product reaches AFA standards on the tread and the riser. With the increasing need for inbuilt safety on steps and the long established track record of the performance, it comfortably meets the need of Architects, specifiers and contractors. INSERT DETAILS PVC (POLYVINYLCHLORIDE) STANDARD INSERTS Used only in interior situations. It passes the BS 5395 test of low risk of slipping in dry conditions. Available in 15 different colours, and suitable for AFA work. A flexible product, which is a matt texture finish, should be attached with an appropriate adhesive system and cleaned with a neutral cleaner, as more powerful chemicals will cause damage. PVC is unaffected by water but should not be used in wet areas due to an increase in slippage and damage to the adhesive system. Dark colours may fade after prolonged exposure to sunlight. It is a non conductive material but still affected by expansion and contraction. Standard stock colours, see table below, any BS colours available, subject to quantity and delivery times. This insert is really classed as a light to medium duty internal product. Available in cut strip lengths, or rolls of 20m. GRP (GLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC WITH A GEL COAT AND ALUMINA GRIT AGGREGATE) A most resilient 2 pack (resin and catalyst) mix, added to glass fibre matting, produces a semi structural product when set. Over sprayed with the alumina grit at the wet stage of the production, the coarseness becomes an integral part of the finished item. Also available in Class 1 fire rated isophthalic resins and phenolic resins can be used for non smoke and non toxic situations. ASTEP s gritted product manufactured in these resins passes the BS 6853 toxicity & smoke emission test & can be used in offshore, subsurface & high risk areas. Standard colours are Black (00E 53), White (00E 55), Light Grey (00A 05) and Lemon Yellow (10E 53) but any BS colour can be achieved subject to quantities. This is a heavy duty product, unaffected by chemicals or sunlight, impervious to water and will give many years of service. Available in cut lengths. Standard length strips are 1200mm or 2400mm. TRAVERSE (RUBBER COMPOSITION WITH ADDED HIGH FRICTION PROPERTIES) Hard wearing, long lasting, easily visible awareness edge. Suitable for all stairs, ramps and flooring details. When cast into concrete mould, the bevel product requires no mechanical or fixing medium, due to the woodruff key shape. However, retro fitting this product into pre cut slots inserting discs into holes is possible and should be screwed or glued. Expansion of this product in relation to the substrate needs to be carefully considered if only gluing. ASTEP can assist in any detail. Pigment rich with added natural fillers means UV over exposure causes very little fading. Clean regularly with light household cleaners, compatible with most products, non conductive and suitable for external and internal applications. 19 COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR / EXTERIOR STAIR TREADS P19 INTERNAL PROCESS & FINISHES METAL PROCESSING & FINISHES ALUMINIUM Composed of a primary alloy and is the most suitable for more complex extrusion processes. It offers a high general tolerance along with a top quality natural state for further finishing treatments. All ASTEP trims are suitable for anodizing. ANODIZED ALUMINIUM Anodic Oxidation process against Corrosion generated by atmospheric agents not associated with galvanization processes. Profiles are previously treated so as to become uniformly mat and subsequently electrochemically oxidized and coloured in the standard AA25 silver finish. BRIGHT POLISHED ALUMINIUM This consists of a special pre-shine chemical/machine process and then of a colour dip for the Gold and Chrome finish. The profile product maintains the same chemical and mechanical resistance qualities as the anodized versions with an aesthetic bright appearance which make it similar to gilt or chromed surfaces. HOT EXTRUSION Extrusion processes involving Stainless steel are subject to tremendous pressure and heat but are still dimensionally stable and maintain the high finish, wear and resistance of rolled profiles. The brushing & mid-polishing finish process is obtained through quartz-fibre nylon rotary brushes which create the matt effect on the profiles visible surfaces but leave the characteristics unchanged. STAINLESS STEEL GRADE Steel belonging to the AUSTINTITE Category which composes the most popular alloy aggregate for a performing product. It is resistant to the most commonly used chemicals, but it may spot or darken on the top surface. In such cases, it is easily buffed out with a conventional polishing product to bring it back to its original shine and can be cleaned with powerful cleaning agents. STAINLESS STEEL 316 GRADE As belonging to the same category, this alloy aggregate comprises of Nickel, Chrome and Molybdenum. The latter conferring an excellent resistance to the harsher conditions such as the presence of Chlorine and Salt concentrates. POWDER COATED ALUMINIUM The powder coating procedure starts with a chromephosphate pre-treatment to proceed then with a polyester powder base coat through electrostatic method. This results in an elevated tolerance to atmospheric agents and UV stabilization. The entire visible surface undergoes an average 60 micron coating. In addition, the colour fastness by heat impression, supplies a further guaranteed resistance to mechanical impact and chemical aggression. STAINLESS STEEL COLD ROLLING Stainless Steel profiles are produced through a cold rolling procedure with a steady thickness control. They differ from the correspondent Brass or Aluminium profile version manufactured with the hot extrusion processes of which they maintain nevertheless, the application and dimensional characteristics. Stainless steel is effectively resistant to high mechanical solicitations and is particularly indicated for the chemical, food processing and hospital environments to meet the stringent standards of hygiene, durability and chemical resistance requirements. BRASS Brass profiles are characterized by a high tolerance to mechanical stress which promotes them as highly recommended for flooring and coverings with intense transit, like industrial applications, and can be used in correspondence to expansion joints. Profiles are manufactured either from hot extrusion or cold rolling processes, with a steady sheet thickness control. Brass offers a high resistance to chemical agents normally present during ceramic tile laying. If there is a constant presence of humidity, the Brass section may start oxidation, resulting in a slight darkening. Surfaces can be easily restored with a conventional polishing product to bring back to its original shine. POLISHED BRASS ASTEP brass extrusions are finished with special buffing machines which enhance the natural shine of the material without altering the mechanical properties. Over time there may be a slight oxidation but this will be easily restored to its original condition by the use of a standard polishing product. CHROMED BRASS The chrome finish effect is realised through a galvanic process which confers a Stainless Steel like shine to a brass profile. The visual impact is appreciated and the overall appearance gains from it. The finished surface has high resistance to chemical aggression but limited resistance to mechanical impacts and persistent abrasion.

20 COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR / EXTERIOR STAIR TREADS P20 ASTEP GRIP TREAD SYSTEMS EXTERNAL RANGE ASTEP EXTERIOR STAIR EDGINGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR VERY HEAVY DUTY APPLICATIONS. WITH THE RAPID RISE IN INCREASED RAIL AND PUBLIC SECTOR TRAVEL, ASTEP HAVE A RANGE OF STAIR EDGINGS DESIGNED TO MEET FOOTFALL FOR ANY TRANSPORT HUB STATION. THESE PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED FOR EASE OF INSTALLATION AND WITH USER COMFORT IN MIND.

21 P21 EXTERNAL RANGE The ASTEP GR Range treads and edges are employed on staircases with fewer users, outlying stations, car parks, public sector housing and shopping centres. The EX range of treads are Aluminium bodied carriers, with AGR!P inserts, and visually approved riser details, ensuring user safety with contrasting colours. Brass can also be used as a carrier for all inserts, a popular option for Stations with Heritage Value. These still meet vision and safety requirements, but are manufactured with materials that are visually sympathetic with a listed status. ASTEP Cast products are available in Gunmetal and Nickel Bronze as a standard 55 x 55mm corner, a 140mm, single or two part tread edge, and a 280mm tread. Inserts are obtainable in the AGR!P finish. These are compatible in the LUL stations. All sections can be utilised to have Phenolic inserts installed on the carrier, making the stair edge suitable for sub-surface applications, including accommodating section 12 & 13 LUL areas.

22 COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR / EXTERIOR STAIR TREADS P22 ASTEP GRIP TREAD SYSTEMS TACTILE PLATES & GROUND SURFACE INDICATORS ASTEP supply a large range of Tactile Plates in GRP (external), Rubber (internal), Ceramic (sub-surface) & individual Bars and Blisters in Stainless and Brass. Any plates or areas for tactile products should be marked out and constructed in 400mm square modules. The surfaces of the all GRP Tactile plates are non slip with a C25 pedestrian grit. Normally buff in colour to be a variant from pavement/ walkway blacktop. This gives a colour warning as well as a detectable raised surface warning. A brief guide and set out dimensions are included below, but individual projects will have to be checked for correct usage according to the AFA Officer of any particular area. CORDUROY HAZARD WARNING SURFACES The purpose of the corduroy surface is to warn visually impaired persons of the presence of specific hazards: stairs, level crossings or the approach to onstreet light rapid transit (LRT) platforms. It can be used where a footway joins a shared route ie cycle ways. It conveys the message hazard, proceed with caution. The Corduroy Plate is mainly used in the approach to Stairs, descent or ascent. Head, Foot and mid landings should be considered. An 800mm wide tactile band is preferred at the Head & Foot of the stairs. Intermediate landings should be treated with a 400mm wide band. UNIFORM BLISTER SURFACES (ON-STREET) These Blister surfaces are used to provide a warning to visually impaired persons who would to otherwise, in the absence of a kerb upstand <25mm high, find it difficult to differentiate between where the footways ends and the carriage way begins. This surface is an essential safety feature for this group of road users at pedestrian crossing points, where the footway is flush with the carriageway to enable wheelchair users to cross unimpeded. THE UNIFORM BLISTER PLATE IS MOST COMMONLY USED AT CROSSING POINTS AND ACCESS RAMPS. An 800mm wide tactile band is preferred at the Head & Foot of all ramps. Intermediate flat areas do not necessarily need a warning band. Any highway crossing point needs to be constructed with the Governments Highway and Tactile plate set out guide. STAGGERED BLISTER SURFACES (OFF-STREET) The Staggered Blister Surface is to warn visually impaired users of the edge of off-street platforms for all modes of rail transport. Heavy Rail platforms Light rapid transit (LRT) platforms Underground Platforms Staggered Blister plates are only used for this application. LOZENGE STREET WARNING PLATE This is an on-street platform edge to give warning to visually impaired users that they are approaching the edge of an on-street Light Rapid Transport (LRT) platform. This shape has been developed to avoid any confusion with the blister surfaces. Mainly used LRT platforms & possibly shared Cycle ways. 24 COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR / EXTERIOR STAIR TREADS P24 ASTEP GRIP TREAD SYSTEMS TT RANGE AFA VISUAL & SENSORY STUDS & BARS Ground Surface Indicators (GSIs) are used where pedestrians with impaired vision need alerting to impending hazards and help with directional guidance. Individual TT studs or, corduroy bars in stainless steel or brass can be used internally or externally for retrofitting. They do not detract from the attractiveness of the floor but rather enhance the look. The surrounding floor surface shows between the individual GSIs giving a superior architectural appearance. Reference to guidance via underfoot surface change signals, conforms to AFA guidelines. Brass and stainless steel GSIs are solid grooved, with an optional non-slip nylon or photo-luminescent insert for quality emergency walkways to benefit everyone. These studs are very suitable for worn stairs where a straight line edge is not possible. COLOUR CONTRAST VALUES Luminescent contrast of Ground Surface Indicators (GSIs) is the difference in the amount of light reflected from the base surface. Tactile Tiles and Stair Nosings should have a minimum 30% luminance contrast while Individual studs should have 45 60%. TT Bars are another part of the AFA range, manufactured by ASTEP. These bars are based on the Current standard sizes that are requested for alerting users as to level changes, especially on stairwells. Whilst there is a difficulty being able to apply all the current legislation to Listed and Heritage buildings, the material that these products are manufactured from are much more sympathetic with the character that these buildings portray. They have been found to be suitable for this application.* (*These decisions are subject to the approval from the Area listed buildings officer, and the client and tenant usage.) The fitting of these bars is guaranteed by the hidden studs along the length, underside and a recess for the adhesive to ensure that there is no clack when the material is trodden on. The cross section of TT115 shows the extra legs depth down the length of a carpet bar. These give product stability around a central fixing. It is important that all AFA work is set out in accordance with the set guidelines to maintain regular consistent underfoot signals. FITTING INSTRUCTIONS Set out plates are available from ASTEP to assist in the correct dimensioning. Substrate preparation is of the utmost importance. Clean, dry & free of any contaminants gives a satisfactory long lasting adhered bond. ASTEP recommend to use a 2 part adhesion system at all times. All studs can be retrofitted. Fitting on stair edges prevents wearing of carpet on the front leading edge. As always, compatibility between substrate and adhesive should be tested on a small unseen area to ensure suitability. Manufacturers recommendation and instruction should always be followed. Particular care must be taken when fixing through carpets. 26 COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR / EXTERIOR STAIR TREADS P26 ASTEP GRIP TREAD SYSTEMS GR RANGE A superior fibreglass GRP product, incorporating the highest quality antislip properties, with a high vision front edge combined in the manufacture of the surface texture, upgrades treated areas to the standards set out by HSE and the AFA for grip and sight-lines. MANUFACTURE Manufactured by gritted aggregate being applied to resin profiles at the wet stage of production in order to give maximum anti-wear properties and minimize any deterioration in surface performance. This product can be manufactured in General Purpose Class 3 resins, Class 1 fire-rated Isophthalic resins, or, for non-smoke and non-toxic gas situations a phenolic resin can be used. ASTEP GR manufactured in these phenolic resins passes the BS 6853 toxicity & smoke emissions test. The Fused Alumina grit becomes an integral part of the tread and the nosing can then be two-pack over painted to the client choice of any BS colour. This product features heavily in the AFA scheme of requirements due to the contrasting colours available on the tread and the nosing area. PRODUCT RANGE The ASTEP GR product range consists of Stair nosing s, complete Stair treads, Flat sheets and Ladder run covers. Strips for Decking planks give the ultimate grip even in wet conditions. Solid GRP nosing s are available in two standard sizes, 55mm x 55mm (GR55) and 70mm x 30mm (GR70). The complete Stair treads are produced in 300mm and 400mm sizes but can be cut to any depth from 150mm upwards. Standard colours are White, Yellow, and Black, but any colour of the 100 BS range can be an option. A 55mm downturn on all these profiles gives the correct level of vision.
