2 Acoustic ceilings A ceiling is unlike any other area within a building. The look you create will remain untouched, uncluttered and unaffected by any other objects, and as such the ceiling can play a major role in your creative vision for the space. A well-designed ceiling can enhance the way an area looks, sounds and feels. The British Gypsum range of acoustic ceilings combine contemporary, stylish design with outstanding acoustic performances. The Rigitone and Gyptone systems provide virtually unlimited design scope for creating stunning spaces. ACTIVair technology: Creating the perfect atmosphere Improving the indoor environment is a major consideration. People often experience health problems, with symptoms ranging from headaches and nausea to chronic fatigue and breathing difficulties, after extended periods of time spent indoors. Many of these systems can be attributed to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are emitted into our homes by people, pets, cleaning products as well as furniture carpets, paints and varnishes. ACTIVair from British Gypsum is a new technology that absorbs VOCs from the room interior and breaks them down into harmless inert compounds, eliminating the risk of re-emission. ACTIVair decomposes up to 70% of VOCs in a controlled test environment. Our VOC-absorbing ACTIVair technology is now included in many Gyptone products as standard, allowing you to create a ceiling that not only improves the look and feel of a space, but also the quality of the air within. Acoustic ceilings in communal areas National Building Regulations Approved Document E was updated in 2010 to build on best practice. Section E3 of the regulations covers reverberation noise in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or rooms for residential purposes. The regulations state that: The common internal parts of buildings which contain flats or rooms for residential purposes shall be designed and constructed in such a way as to prevent more reverberation around the common parts than is reasonable. Lining the common internal parts of buildings with sound absorbing materials can effectively control reverberation, however the introduction of these materials into communal areas can create real design issues. Using carpets that are capable of giving the high levels of sound absorption required, for instance, can lead to problems with ongoing maintenance and long term durability. Equally, installing common mineral fibre tiles on exposed metal grids can give areas an institutional feel and detract from the overall building design. 3 Approved Document E Sound absorption legislation requirements What is reverberation? In acoustics, reverberation refers to the multiple reflections, or echoes, of sounds inside a building that merge and persist a short time (up to a few seconds) before fading away. At each reflection, some of the sound energy is absorbed, causing the amplitude of the sound wave, and the intensity of the sound, to reduce. The problem of reverberation In increasing numbers, people living within apartments complain about the noise generated within their apartment buildings. The use of hard floor surfaces and high ceilings are a major contribution to this unwanted noise. Sounds generated in communal spaces, that continue unabated, will tend to build up in intensity and cause noise nuisance and disturbance within adjacent living areas. Controlling reverberation Building Regulations Approved Document E offers guidance on how to provide reasonable standards of sound insulation in dwellings and other residential buildings, for both new-build and refurbishment / conversions. Section E3 of these regulations covers reverberation noise in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or rooms for residential purposes. Requirement E3 applies to all corridors, stairwells, hallways and entrance halls that give access to, or are adjacent to, the flat or rooms being used for residential purposes. Lining ceilings and walls with sound absorbing materials can effectively control reverberation. The regulations give two methods of calculating the amount of absorption required in any communal areas. The two methods are referred to as Method A and Method B. In our experience Method A is the most common practice and easier to comprehend. In comparison to Method A, Method B takes into account existing absorption provided by all surfaces. However, the method is more complex and requires knowledge of all materials to be used for lining the area and their sound absorption coefficients. Therefore in this publication we refer to Method A only. If you want to use Method B please refer to Building Regulations Approved Document E, section 7: Reverberation in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or rooms for residential purposes. To simplify the specification of materials, the sound absorption performance can be quoted as an absorber Class. There are five classes (A through to E) with Class A signifying the products with the highest level of sound absorption. However, to comply with Approved Document E using method A, only class C or D is required. Please note, sound absorbing ceilings are required as a separate entity to any sound insulation requirements. For example, sound absorbing ceilings should be installed below the relevant sound insulating and fire protective ceiling. Please refer to pages Technical Advice Centre Tel:

4 Sound absorption in communal areas Method A Entrance halls, corridors or hallways Cover an area equal to, or greater than, the floor area, with a Class C absorber or better. It is normally more practical to cover the ceiling area with the required absorption. Stairwells or stair enclosures Calculate the combined area of the stair treads, the upper surface of the intermediate landings, the upper surface of the landings (excluding ground floor) and the ceiling area of the top floor. Either cover at least an area equal to this calculated area with a Class D absorber, or cover an area equal to at least 50% of this calculated area with a Class C absorber or better. The absorption material should be equally distributed between floor levels. It will normally be convenient to cover the underside of intermediate landings, the underside of the other landings, and the ceiling on the top floor. However, where there is insufficient ceiling area available, the absorptive materials can be applied to any surface. In this case, the use of Gyptone boards as wall linings would be a suitable solution. Entrance halls, corridors or hallways Method A requires a Class C absorber with an area equivalent to the floor area to be installed in the corridor. Where the corridor width exceeds 1200mm, e.g. one full board width, it may be desirable to install a plain board border. This is possible using all Class C absorbers listed below. For example, Gyptone QUATTRO 41 boards can be installed with an area equivalent to 10% of the total ceiling area being plain board. This area can be increased to 24% of total ceiling area if a 50mm Isover Acoustic Partition Roll (APR 1200) insulation is included in the cavity.
