1 Transportation 4 th Avenue Subway Station, Brooklyn, NY Located in Brooklyn, New York, The 4 th Avenue Station opened for service on July 1, 1933, and is one of only two elevated stations constructed on the IND system. F.T. Fellner designed the structure in an art deco form with an undulating aluminum clad steel arch stretching over 4 th Avenue and a copper canopy supported by copper clad column capitals and ceiling soffits over the customer platform and tracks. Large granite, limestone and brick towers with chevrons, ziggurats, fountains and sunburst patterns face the street. In 2005 the station received listing on the National Register of Historic Places; the station retains a high degree of integrity of location, design, setting and materials. The station has just been restored in Our role in the project started with a full conditions assessment, and continued through construction administration. Along the way we conducted laboratory materials testing, in situ materials testing, and provided treatment recommendations and review for all masonry, wood, copper and aluminum at the station. The materials investigations included paint analysis, gravimetric mortar analysis and replication, metal identification, in situ paint stripping tests, masonry cleaning tests and metal refinishing tests. St. Paul Union Depot, St. Paul, MN The three buildings were erected in several phases as World War I caused a halt in construction for several years. When completed in 1923 the depot had nine railroads operating on 9 platforms serving 18 tracks. The station has been restored and re configured for changing functions, including converting the offices to residential housing and the platforms into a multimodal transportation hub, the exterior. Jablonski Building Conservation completed a Conditions Assessment of the interior and exterior of St. Paul Union Depot. Close up surveys of the exterior were completed via an aerial lift. The final Conditions Assessment included each section of the depot including the Head house, Concourse and Waiting Room (above) long with drawings depicting locations of deteriorated conditions. In addition to recommendations for treatment of the interior and exterior masonry and interior plaster, the assessment included a Finish Color Investigations of the Head house and Waiting Room, and cleaning test for all interior materials including terrazzo, terra cotta, brick, faux stone and marble. JBC also provided repair specifications for interior and exterior masonry, cleaning, terra cotta repair and replication and decorative painting. For the final phase of the project, we provided construction administration services including submittal review and mock up review.

2 White Plains Road, Three Historic Elevated Stations, Bronx, NY JBC provided conservation and preservation services for the New York City MTA contract for six elevated stations on the White Plains Road IRT Line in the Bronx: East Tremont Avenue, Freeman Street, 174 th Street, Simpson Street, Prospect Avenue and Jackson Avenue Stations. Of these, the Simpson Street, Prospect Avenue and Jackson Avenue Stations are historic stations, where the work proposed required the review of the New York State Historic Preservation Office. Our work at the White Plains Road IRT line stations involved a thorough survey of the three historic stations with an assessment of existing conditions, identification of all historic materials, and restoration means, methods and materials for the control houses, platforms, cast iron railings, and canopies. We also assisted with construction documents and construction supervision. The main elements were restoration of the copper cladding on the building exterior, cast iron railings and lamp posts as well as windows and doors that were restored where possible and replicated where damaged beyond repair. Newark Penn Station, Newark, NJ Completed in 1931, Newark Pennsylvania Station was designed by the New York architecture firm of McKim, Mead and White as a multi modal building originally housing terminals for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Hudson and Manhattan Tube System (now the PATH), the Newark City Subway, buses and taxis. As part of the Platform Improvements Program for the station, Jablonski Building Conservation (JBC) was retained to perform an assessment of the historic material, creation of photomontages of each platform, an assessment of existing conditions and recommendations for repair. Historic materials included concrete, aluminum cladding and railings, ceramic tile, terrazzo flooring and wood waiting room benches. Mortar analyses and finishes investigations were performed to develop appropriate replication mixes and to determine the historic colors.

3 MORRISTOWN TRAIN STATION, MORRISTOWN, NJ Morristown Train Station is a National Register Listed train station that was suffering from deterioration of its interior finishes. As part of the project, JBCI was retained to perform an existing conditions assessment of the three buildings comprising the station complex. The investigation uncovered the sources of the problem, roofs with failed flashing and a poor tile repairs over time. The water shedding system, which included the gutters, was another source of water infiltration. Arts and crafts finishes were documented in the interior and called out for special protection as well as restoration during the station work. In addition JBC worked with the architect on the construction documents. OYSTER BAY TRAIN STATION, OYSTER BAY, NY Completed in 1889, the Oyster Bay Long Island Railroad Station served as the main terminus for travel between Oyster Bay Long Island and New York City. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, the building is currently in the process of being transformed into the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. The railroad station has gone through several renovations, the largest of which in 1902 transformed the station from a small rural terminus to a larger, more elaborate station suitable for an American President. Although the platform sheds have long been removed and passenger trains no longer stop in front of the Oyster Bay Railroad Station, the building s original use and form are still highly visible. Serving as the local depot for President Theodore Roosevelt during his summer stays in Oyster Bay, the station saw a number of important politicians and dignitaries pass through its doors on their way to Sagamore Hill. JBC completed the Historic Structure Report to assist the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum in determining what was required for the planed restoration of the station.

4 Upper Montclair Train Station, Upper Montclair, New Jersey Constructed in 1892, the Upper Montclair Train Station was destroyed by fire in It was a small wooden structure constructed for the Montclair Railway when this area of New Jersey was still rural. After the fire, JBC was retained by New Jersey Transit to survey and catalog the extant materials. The surveyed elements were grouped into categories of Salvageable and Unsalvageable. Salvageable items were divided into elements that were salvageable for reuse or salvageable for replication. Elements that were salvageable for re use were rehabilitated or refinished for installation on the new construction. Elements that were salvageable for replication were utilized in the creation of new construction materials. The station was re built in 2010 in the same style as the original, only slightly larger, and retained the undamaged Port Cochere, which was a significant design element at the exterior. Newark International Airport, Essex County, Newark, New Jersey A comprehensive materials characterization was performed in for the brick and concrete masonry on the interior and exterior of Newark Airport Building One. The masonry testing included laboratory testing of the brick, concrete and mortar as well as on site masonry cleaning tests. A survey of the existing masonry conditions was also conducted. We completed a color investigation of interior and exterior paint finishes determining the historic finishes.

5 Marine Air Terminal LaGuardia Airport, Queens, New York All of the masonry on the building, except the low relief terra cotta band and the main entrance door surround, was covered with multiple layers of opaque paint. Non destructive coating removal tests were performed on the brick masonry on the ground floor west of the front entrance. After stripping the brick appeared clean. The tan colored brick has a slightly glossier sheen than the matte finish of the black accent brick. Areas of damaged brick can be detected through the paint layers higher on the building.
