Compartment Review Presentation Atlanta Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County ,225 Presque Isle Management Area: Cheboygan Basin Moraines Identified Planning Goals: A portion of the compartment fall within the Black Mountain Recreation Area the rest of the area is managed for timber production and wildlife habitat. Soil and topography: Gravely sands and organic mucks on topography ranging from flat to rolling hills. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Mixed ownership around the compartment with increasing development mostly to the south of the compartment. Unique Natural Features: No Unique Natural Features known. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: No Archeological, Historical, or Cultural Features known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Black Mountain Recreation Area. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Wildlife Habitat Considerations: The primary focus of wildlife habitat management will be to address the habitat requirements identified for the listed featured species found in this compartment. These species include red-shouldered hawk, ruffed grouse, wild turkey, and white-tailed deer. Based on the selected featured species, some of the most significant wildlife management issues in the management area are the maintenance of young forest, extensive mature forest and large open grassland complexes, the retention of large, over-mature trees and snags and the maintenance and expansion of hard mast and mesic conifer components. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. The glacial drift thickness varies between 100 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Devonian Dundee and Detroit River Groups. The Dundee is quarried for limestone near Rogers City. A gravel pit is located in Section 29 and there should be additional potential in the Compartment. This area has had no drilling for oil and gas. Oil and gas producing Silurian Niagaran Reefs are located twelve miles to the south. All of the State land is currently leased for oil and gas development. Vehicle Access: Several maintained county roads along with numerous forest trails pass through the compartment. Survey Needs: None needed. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: O.R.V. and snowmobile trails pass through the compartment. Fire Protection: Access is ok. Fragmented state land. Area is covered by the Onaway Field Office. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade.
