2 Forestry training in European countries within the next 10 years? How to tackle the major challenges during the crisis and beyond? The must attend events: The launch of the pan-european association of forestry training centres. The official launch of the European Forestry and Environmental Skills Council (EFESC) which will be the organisation to manage and maintain skills and competence certificates for forestry. The accreditation of training centres for delivering European certifications of competencies recognised by the forestry sector. Supported by the Joint FAO/UNECE/ILO Experts Network to implement SFM

3 Have a look at the agenda: Forestry training in Europe today and outlook in 5 to 10 years? First results of a survey on professions, skills and forestry (enquiry launched in January 2011). Addressing the future challenges with practical actions Funding issues, public support, quality of forestry training, meeting forestry sector needs, technical requirements, common understanding of challenges and threats and recommendations. What is the role of the training partners, including entrepreneurs, industry and the forest owners? How can training centres meet the international reality? Recognition of competencies at a European level: Examples of new European Certificates of Competencies (chain-saw users and forestry entrepreneurs). Pan-European skills and competence certification under the umbrella of EFESC.Come to Ossiach and help ensuring that future certificates will meet the needs of forestry and environmental services. Advantages of partnerships with manufacturers of forest machines: Example of a partnership presented jointly by a training centre and machines manufacturers Valmet/Komatsu, Pfanzelt). The traditional marketplace: Exploring new ways of working through European programmes. Building on synergies to address the challenges The launch of the pan-european association of forestry training centres, based on Eduforest and a new declaration to be convened by participants in Ossiach. Association committed to quality and to working together, debate on the basis of a concept note or a declaration with several corner stones such as contributing to activities and survey of the club, exchanging relevant information between members, promoting the mobility of apprentices, students and teaching staff, use of the label etc

4 Who is expected to attend the conference? The conference is aimed at all those who are involved in forestry training and who are interested in sharing experience and knowledge with other institutions or other countries, especially by the means of trans-national projects and working programmes. This invitation reaches out to schools, professional associations (e.g. ENFE, CEP), the MCPFE, European Commission, research centres, universities for applied sciences and some universities, forest insurance organisations, labor unions, forest owners and all other bodies involved in forest training. The invitation is also extended to the international network of forest pedagogy. Ossiach, a conference for your benefit, you should not miss it!

5 Background Forestry and timber harvesting is under growing pressure from society. Due to several reasons there soon might be a shortage of qualified personnel. The European certification of forests requires competent work forces and entrepreneurs. Forestry and timber market is international. The new uses of wood are promoted at European level with strong objectives. Forestry is organized at the European level, such as Forest Europe, CEPF, CEPI, The European Network for Forestry Entrepreneurs, etc. The labor market will soon be open in Europe. Mobility of entrepreneurs and work forces is already a reality. The global impact of climate change and its consequences is growing in importance. The impact on forest work (eg. storms and fires) and therefore on training is increasing too. And at the same time, forestry training has progressed: The mobility for students and trainees is increasing. The mobility for trainers is on track. A competences curricula common to all European countries for forestry entrepreneurs is almost ready. A framework for the European certification of competences is on track. Training centres are more and more likely to cooperate. For all these reasons, every 3 years, a major European meeting of all the training centres and their partners takes place. A rendezvous with sharing exchanges, suggestions, recommendations, ideas, collective intelligence, and concrete decisions for cooperation. The 1 st one was held in 2005 in France (La Bastide des Jourdans) and the last one in 2008 in Switzerland (Lyss).

6 When? The conference will be held from Monday June 6th 2011, at 9:00 am (opening) to Wednesday, June 8 at 1:00 pm (official closing) with an excursion / fieldtrip on Tuesday afternoon. The participants are strongly advised and asked to arrive on Sunday June 5th and attend the conference in its totality. Languages Official languages will be English, French and German. During the plenary sessions there will be a simultaneous translation into English, French and German. Call for contributions We encourage all participants of the conference to propose to us their active contributions! Possibilities include presentations in the plenary, market place, posters, internet, demonstrations, workshops, brochures, DVD, etc. Excursion The Tuesday fieldtrip-excursion will take us to a nearby forest where you will be introduced first-hand to different forest professions in Austria and their training. General aspects of forestry in Austria will also be presented.

7 Transportation The Forestry Training Centre is located in the village of Ossiach (pop. 760), directions are to be found on our Website or below. A shuttle is provided by the Forestry Training Centre between the Villach train station, the Klagenfurt Airport, the Training Centre and your hotel (if on our list). by car The meeting venue is easily reachable by car since lokated nearby the cross of the highway Munich Ljubljana and the highway Vienna Venezia. 9 Fees The registration fee is 290,-- until April 30 th after this date: 350,-- till May 23 rd, 2011 (payment deadline). This amount comprises all meals, shuttle transportation to and from your hotel, the excursion (field trip) on Tuesday, translation, documentations about the conference as well as a part of the administrative costs. Not included are your overnight stay (see accommodation ), drinks and all personal expenses.
