4 Introduction Indicators for sustainable forest management are more and more required BUT : There is an over estimation of monitoring capacities The definitions of the indicators are still quite vague and result of a top-down process The relevance of some indicators is not scientifically based THERE IS A NEED OF SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE ON THIS ISSUE : FORSEE project

6 Pan European process for SFM organised in 6 criteria and 35 quantitative indicators: C 1: Maintenance and Appropriate Enhancement of Forest Resources and their Contribution to Global Carbon Cycles (4) C 2: Maintenance of Forest Ecosystem Health and Vitality (4) C 3: Maintenance and Encouragement of Productive Functions of Forests(Wood and Non-Wood) (5) C 4: Maintenance, Conservation and Appropriate Enhancement Of Biological Diversity in Forest Ecosystems (9) C 5: Maintenance and Appropriate Enhancement of Protective Functions in Forest Management (notably soil and water) (2) C 6: Maintenance of other socioeconomic functions and conditions (11)

7 Context and rationale (2) some criteria not well documented mostly empirical indicators pertinence of some indicators? heterogeneous quality of data at local levels limited demonstration of SFM long-term and scale monitoring issues

8 Objectives Evaluate pertinence, feasibility and costs of SFM indicators at local scales through: Assessment and cost estimation of a common list of 36 indicators in 9 pilot zones Demonstration of the relevance through verifiers Improvement of the scientific knowledge required by regional scientific studies Establishment of an European experts network and demonstration sites of SFM Monitoring

Feasibility and precision of new data for new indicators : Carbon polls, lying deadwood, damages, Identification of stratification parameters from stand and landscape for C2 and C4 Improvement of methods : minimal sizes, Reference set of data about costs of the indicators

18 Main expectations - From the scientific studies Identification of keydata data : appropriate riparian buffer, edges,.. Creations of new models : Biodiversity index, allometric equations, understorey biomass equations, Test of remote sensing methods for forest health Set up of a scientific network of experts for forest monitoring support

19 Conclusive remarks importance of intermediate levels (landscapes & regions) to link operational implementation of SFM with intergovernmental processes pertinence of reference pilot zones for demonstration and long term monitoring feasibility of assessing SFM indicators at intermediate scales through harmonized and extended field protocols limits and costs of existing indicators
