Indian Forest Service Officers MCT Foreign module in Finland experiences from the earlier course An excellent overview of the Finnish forestry in particular & European forestry in general. A firsthand experience of mechanized logging, ecotourism, protected area management, bioenergy, new technologies used in the forestry sector. Has enriched my knowledge base and will definitely prove helpful in its application to Indian scenarios. The course is well planned. The inclusion of the adventure activity by forestry students was a great idea. A very enriching experience. Good speakers/experts made the class room session meaningful.

FINLAND Finland Facts democratic republic independent since 1917 member of the EU since 1995 total area km2 population 5.2 million (17/ km2) (China 1,3 milliard Belongs to the boreal coniferous zone ~70% of Finland s total landarea is forestry, 10% covered by waterways, 6% agricultural land ~20 million ha of forest land, 4 ha/citizen 136/km2)
FINLAND Finland is one of the northernmost countries in the world. It is located between the 60th and 70th latitudes, and a quarter of the land lies to the north of the Arctic Circle. Finland's land border with Russia (1,269 km) is the eastern border of the European Union. Climate The Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream affect the climate in Finland remarkably, making it warmer than elsewhere at the same latitudes. The mean annual temperature in South-Western Finland is +5 C and only -1 C at the timberline in Lapland. In southern Finland the mean annual precipitation is mm degreasing to 400 mm at the northern timberline. In south about one third of the precipitation is snow which covers the ground for 3 to 4 months, the ground is frozen for 2 to 5 months a year. In the northern Finland, the snow can cover the ground even 7 months a year, the ground remains frozen for about 8 months a year.

IFS MCT Themes: The role of forest policy and governance issues with respect to ecological modernizarion of sustainable forest management, as well as with to ecodevelopment with special emphasis on bioeconomy, including bioenergy. In addition, special focus areas will be forestry related ecotourism and eco-development, planning and inventory systems, forest fire management and an overview of forest technology. Furthermore resource efficiency, natural resources and bioeconomy strategies are to be discussed. The stated goals are to study best practices, through classroom lectures, case studies (indoor and field) and interaction with experts and senior forest managers with experience in forest management.
Interactive panel discussions, case studies, and field visits involving expert practitioners providing applied real-world context of how policy is developed and implemented in Finland and in the EU, including analysis and comparison to policy development and implementation and governance challenges in India. Sustainable and multiple goal forest management, including forest and natural resources inventory using also novel lidar systems. Applications to e.g. wildlife management (case Nepal) will be discussed and tried in excercises (Arbonaut company, School of Forest Sciences, METLA) EduSilva and University, Forest Research Institute, State forest and Natural Heritage Service (forest and park service), Forest Development Centre TAPIO, European Forest Institute, Biosphere Reserve, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Labour and Industry, Private Forest Owners association, European Parliament, Game and Fisheries Research Institute,Forest companies.
