One dating dti method is dendrochronology, d also called tree ring dating. dti Dendrochronology depends on the fact that growth rings of trees have show variation depending on the rainfall or climate. Trees make a new ring every year. Cold, dry year causes thin rings and warm, wet year causes thick rings. If archaeologists found a old, preserved piece of timber at a site, they can identify the species of the wood, and cross date it with living trees of the same species in the area by comparing the pattern of the rings. The oldest age measured using dendrochronology is about 9000 years. Anothermethod is potassium argon argondating. Molten rock releases argon 14 into the atmosphere. When the rock cools, no more argon 14 can escape. Potassium 40 is a radioactive isotope that decays into argon 14 and by measuring the ratio of potassium 40. It can be used to measure ages as old as 4.5 billion and as young as 20,000. The way that radiocarbon dating was done on the shroud was questionable. Radiocarbon dating found that the shroud originated from the medieval ages. However, another method was to test the amount of vanillin in the linen. Vanillin is produced by the thermal breakdown of lignin, a component ofplantmaterial material. Linen from the Dead Sea Scrollstest negative for vanillin; medieval scrolls test positive. Dating these samples could help provide a better picture of when Neanderthals interacted with humans and how they could have interbred. This dating could help the genomes be better related.
