6 Introduction Introduction This directory presents information about the production and use of wood byproducts, including sawdust, bark, chips, shavings, slabs, and edgings, in West Virginia and areas of adjoining states where business is conducted in West Virginia. These data were collected for a period during the summer of 2011 through a mail survey of 346 primary and secondary wood products manufacturers and 99 potential users of wood byproducts. The report and directory provide current information to producers and users of these wood byproducts in order to enhance the available markets for wood residues generated in the primary and secondary manufacturing industries. Table 1. Total reported byproducts produced on a weekly basis in West Virginia. (tons per week produced and % of total) Chips Sawdust Bark Recycled Pulp Hog Fuel Planer Shavings Other Total Primary Secondary Total % 0% 36% % 10% 31% % 0% 14% % 13% 13% % 3% 3% % 1% 2% % 0% 1% % 27% 100% market wood byproducts from their processing activities. In the survey, producers were asked to specifically identify wood byproducts available during an average production week and to identify the total amount generated. A number of producers responded to the question by indicating they had no wood byproducts available for purchase; that is, they had already established markets for all of the wood residue generated by their manufacturing operation(s). Responses to the initial and follow up mailings of the survey, totaled 53 producers and 18 users. In 2011, those responding to the survey reported producing 16,358 tons (table 1) of wood residue on a weekly basis. This is down over 10,000 tons per week from This can be at least partially attributed to the large number of forest product companies that have closed this past year. While this survey has captured much of the produced wood residue, many producers do not choose to participate in this survey, but still produce and Sawmills (primary industry) produced 73% of this residue, and 27% was produced by secondary manufacturers. Within the primary industry segment, 50% of the residue produced were chips, followed by sawdust (28%) and bark (19%). Secondary manufacturers reported that 47% of their produced residue was recycled pulp and 38% was sawdust. Of the total residue produced, the majority was in chip form (36%), followed by sawdust at 31% and bark at 14% each (Table 1 and Figure 1). 6 Appalachian Hardwood Center

7 Price Analysis Over the past number of years of this survey, data were collected on byproduct sales price. These data included Freight On Board (FOB) prices for each of the different woody byproduct type. Table 2 provides the average prices per ton for each of the product types over the last three years. In 2011, Chips were offered at the highest average dollar amount -- $26.05 (21 responses). Sawdust was the next most valuable at $18.55, while bark was offered at $ Each of these 2011 values were lower than those in 2010, with sawdust prices off the most with a $6.87 drop in avarage price over the last year. Total sawdust volume available (tons/week) Insights from Producers and Users In addition to basic questions pertaining to the quantity and types of wood byproducts available, a series of questions were presented to wood byproducts producers. The questions and respondent s answers are listed below. The first series of pie charts (figs 10-16) represent responses from producers of byproducts. The second series (figs 17-18) represent user responses. Producer Insights Additional questions for producers included: 2. Do you actively market your available byproducts? (fig. 10) 3. Has the lack of markets for your available byproducts restricted production? (fig. 11) 4. Has production been restricted due to cost of byproduct disposal? (fig. 12) 5. What is the easiest (fig. 13) and hardest (fig. 14) byproduct for you to sell? 6. What is the easiest (fig. 15) and hardest (fig. 16) byproduct for you to give away? 7. What percentage of your byproducts generate revenue? 8. Do you currently use wood residue to produce heat, steam, electricity? Fifty-two percent of respondents actively marketed their wood byproducts (fig. 10). Only seven percent of respondents felt that a lack of byproduct markets restricted their company s production (fig. 11). A slightly lower 5% of responding producers felt that their company s production had been restricted due to the cost of byproducts disposal (fig. 12). Disposal costs do not appear to be an overall problem. 12 Appalachian Hardwood Center

13 Yes 52% No 48% Yes 7% No 93% Introduction Figure 10. Do you actively market your available byproducts? (58 respondents) Figure 11. Has the lack of markets for your available byproducts restricted your production? (59 respondents) On average, 77% of byproducts generated revenue (53 responses). Seventeen producers reported that less than fifty percent of residues generated revenue, the same percentage as in 2008 and similar to those from the past few years. Sixty-eight percent reported that between 75 and 100 percent of their byproducts generated revenues, and of those 29 (55% of all responses) reported 100 percent. When asked what was the easiest wood byproduct for producers to sell, 40% responded that sawdust and 17% responded that chips were the easiest to market (fig. 13). Conversely, 33% of producers felt that bark was the hardest byproducts to sell (fig. 14). Thirty-seven percent felt that sawdust was the easiest byproduct to give away, while others felt that the hardest byproducts to give away were Slabs and Edging 19%, and chips and bark, both at 10% (fig. 16). Energy production from wood byproducts remained steady from previous years with twenty-two percent of respondents producing heat and fifteen percent producing steam. There were no companies reporting that they generate electricity with wood byproducts. Yes 5% No 95% Figure 12. Has your company s production been restricted due to the cost of byproduct disposal? 15 Users Insights Additional questions for by-product users included: 4. Do you have a reliable supply of wood byproducts? (fig. 17) 5. Has the cost of purchasing byproducts restricted your production? (fig. 18) Responses from users of wood byproducts seem to indicate that most respondents have a reliable supply of byproducts (fig 17). However, the percentage of users without a reliable supply almost doubled from moving from 17% to 33%. Another big jump by users were the number of respondents that replied that the cost of purchasing byproducts has restricted production, which grew from 33% saying yes in 2010 to 50% saying yes in Going back further, in 2002 only five percent of companies were restricted by the cost of purchasing byproducts. These numbers could grow even higher as the number of producers continues to shrink as new, larger, and less traditional companies (like energy producers) mobilize and increase demand for these byproducts. Introduction In the 2011 survey, byproduct users indicated that they have needs for 55,941 tons of wood byproducts per week. This almost 40,000 tons more than what is was reported as being produced each week. Some of this increase in demand can be attributed to new users being added to our survey and new participation in the survey by pellet manufacturers and other large byproducts users. 16 Introduction WV Wood Industry Byproducts Website In addition to publishing this director, the Appalachian Hardwood Center and the WV Division of Energy have developed an interactive website for West Virginia wood byproducts. The website provides a one stop place for producers, users, and others interested in biomass opportunities to find relevant information. Residue Finder Search Engine and Maps Anyone searching for wood byproducts can click the button marked Residue Finder in order to conduct a customized search for available byproducts. A search of all mills for a fixed-radius around the selected city is possible. Once the appropriate search terms have been identified and submitted, a report will be generated with the results. 16 Appalachian Hardwood Center
