1 FROM: SUBJECT: MARITIME COLLEGE OF FOREST TECHNOLOGY June 12 th & 13 th, 2018 course offering The Maritime College of Forest Technology s, Department of Continuing Education is pleased to offer a new two-day workshop titled Know Your Trees Native Tree ID with Sarah McCoy as lead instructor. The dates of this workshop will be June 12 th & 13 th, 2018 beginning at 8:30 AM each day. The course will be held in room 125 of the Maritime College of Forest Technology, Fredericton, New Brunswick. Specific course details including an instructor profile, application form, and tuition costs are included in the attached announcement. This is an introductory dendrology course to give people the knowledge and skills necessary to identify the native trees that grow around us. This course, through lecture and field trips, will help participants learn the various key identifying features of the different species. You will leave this course with a much better understanding of what grows in our region. 2 DATES: June 12th & 13th, 2018 TIME: LOCATION: OVERVIEW: 8:30 AM 4:30 PM each day Room 230, Blenis Hall, Maritime College of Forest Technology, Fredericton NB. This two day workshop has been created for both forestry professionals and the general public. The course will focus on: Identifying native trees, Comparing softwood and hardwood species, Learning how to use key identification features in the field. Information will be presented both in lecture and hands-on format. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills to be able to: Identify both softwood and hardwood species. Identify species based on leaves, twigs, and buds. CANDIDATES: This course is suitable for: Forestry professionals, both industry and private woodlot owners. Individuals from the general public that have an interest in learning about trees. COURSE FORMAT: Know Your Trees Native Tree ID training will be conducted in an informal manner. Audience participation is encouraged as everyone learns from shared experiences. Day 1 Section 1: Tree ID: An Overview Definitions Define softwood and hardwood Section 2: Identification features Leaf and bud arrangement Leaf shape
3 Day 1 (cont d) Section 3: Identification of native species: Hardwood species (examples of groups that will be covered) o Maple o Birch o Oak o Ash o Poplar / Aspen Section 4: Hands on ID training This training will take place both in & outdoors Day 2 Section 1: Identification of native species Softwood Species (examples of groups that will be covered) o Pine o Spruce o Fir Crown shape Section 2: Hands on ID training This training will take place both in & outdoors FACILITATOR: Sarah McCoy is a forestry instructor at the Maritime College of Forest Technology (MCFT) in Fredericton, NB, where she teaches 1 st and 2 nd year students. She graduated from the former Nova Scotia Agricultural College (DAL- AC) in 2010 with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Environmental Horticulture. After graduation she attended MCFT and graduated with a forest technician diploma. Upon graduation she worked for the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) on a number of both native and non-native insect projects. She was recently published as a co-author in the Journal of Chemical Ecology for work she completed at CFS. MATERIALS: MCFT will provide all training materials for this workshop. Individuals are responsible to wear safety boots and a hardhat. For those that do not own a hardhat, we have limited supplies available on a first-come firstserved basis.
4 ENROLMENT: Enrolment will be limited to twenty (20) candidates on a first come-first served basis. ACCOMMODATIONS: For those requiring accommodations, we have a room rental agreement with the Fredericton Inn. Please dial and use discount code MCFT. Costs for standard rooms are: $99 per night single occupancy $119 per night double occupancy MEALS: TUITION: Lunch and nutrition breaks are included in your training fee. Tuition for the program, including supplies, is $ % HST. CANCELLATION POLICY: In 2017 we saw a significant increase in last minute cancellations and no-shows to our courses. This causes additional costs to MCFT. Being a not-for-profit organization we simply cannot afford this. In order to keep costs and tuition prices as low as possible we have implemented a strict cancellation policy. Please refer to the registration form for details. Know Your Trees Native Tree ID is equivalent to 14 Continuing Forestry Education Credits
