1 The Northwest Environmental Training Center presents: Stormwater Monitoring and Data Analysis under New NPDES Phase I and II Regulations Course ID: HYD-408 (2 days) July 22-23, 2008, 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M. Lacey Community Center 6729 Pacific Avenue SE Lacey, WA Instructor: Dylan S. Ahearn Ph.D, Herrera Environmental Consultants, Inc. & others Description:On January 17th, 2007, new NPDES Phase I and II permits were issued in the state of Washington. New requirements in these permits include increased BMP and outfall monitoring with automated sampling technology. What will these new permits mean for your stormwater monitoring programs and how will you meet these rigorous sampling requirements? This 2-day workshop will provide hands-on training for both the novice and the experienced water resources professional. Workshop topics will include the proper installation and application of stage gauges, primary measurement devices, and acoustic doppler and electromagnetic velocity meters to meet new hydrologic monitoring requirements of the permits. Step-by-step guidance on the use of autosampling technology will also be presented to facilitate collection of representative samples for determining pollutant event mean concentrations (also a requirement of the new permits). Finally, data analysis procedures will be presented for pollutant load calculations, hypothesis testing with parametric and nonparametric statistics, long-term trend analysis, and graphical presentation and interpretation of environmental data. This class will provide the student with all the tools necessary to design and implement a stormwater monitoring program in accordance with the new Phase I and II permit requirements. COURSE TOPICS Introduction to New NPDES Regulations Outfall Monitoring BMP Performance Monitoring: - TAPE - Conventional BMPs - LID Practices Flow Monitoring in Pipes and Channels: - Manning s Equation - Rating Curves - Flumes and Weirs - Velocity Meters Autosamplers: - Flow-weighted and Time-weighted Sampling - Composite and Discrete Sampling Data Analysis Load Calculation Methods: - Interpolation and Extrapolation - Hypothesis Testing Hypothesis Testing: - Long-term Trend Analysis - Graphical Presentation - First Flush Analysis Case Studies Field Trip - Visit over 6 active stormwater monitoring study sites* Intended Audience: This hands-on course is intended for engineers, hydrologists and environmental scientists seeking an improved understanding of stormwater monitoring and data analysis.
