Name: Lit-Based Essay Outline Learning Target: I can defend a thesis in a five-paragraph essay that uses facts and direct details to support my points. My Essay must: Include the following terms: three branches of government, executive, legislative, judicial, checks & balances, and federalism contain at least five paragraphs that include a well-defined thesis, three body paragraphs that use the five step process to analyze evidence, and a concluding paragraph. be free of grammar and spelling errors 500 words Introductory Paragraph Directions: Create a bridge for the hook and thesis that are provided. Your bridge should explain the quote by Madison, briefly summarize the purpose of the Constitution, and why the delegates were so concerned about the issue of tyranny. Hook - James Madison once wrote, If men were angels, no government would be necessary. My Bridge Thesis - The Constitution protects against tyranny by dividing the power of government. To do this effectively state and federal powers were divided, the Federal government was split into three branches, and a system of checks and balances was put in place so that the branches could have constitutional control over each other.

Body Paragraph #1 Federalism Topic Sentence Clearly introduce the idea of Federalism. Quote a double security arises to the rights of the people. The different governments will each control each other, at the same time that each will be controlled by itself (Madison, Federalist Paper #51). prove that creating a federalized government protects citizens from tyranny. Use the This proves that if then because structure. government. Why does it matter that federalism protects against tyranny?

Body Paragraph #2 Separation of Powers Topic Sentence Clearly introduce the three branches of government. Quote the accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, whether hereditary, selfappointed, or elective, may be justly pronounced the very definition of tyranny (Madison, Federalist Paper #47). prove that separating government powers protects citizens from tyranny. Use the This proves that if then because structure. government. Why does it matter that separation of powers protects against tyranny?

Body Paragraph #3 Checks & Balances Topic Sentence Clearly introduce the terms checks & balances. Quote the constant aim is to divide and arrange the several offices in such a manner as they may be in check on the other (The three branches) should not be so far separated as to have no constitutional control over each other (Madison, Federalist Paper #51). prove that a system of checks and balances protects citizens from tyranny. Use the This proves that if then because structure. government. Why does it matter that a system of checks and balances protects against tyranny?

Conclusion Paragraph Restated Thesis Without a doubt, by creating a federal system that divides the power of the U.S. government, the Constitution protects against tyranny. Review Subtopics: Write three sentences (one summarization sentence for each of the three main points from your body paragraphs). Concluding Thoughts: The final part of your conclusion states the larger significance of your thesis. For example: What s the universal significance or larger lesson to be learned about dividing government powers from the text and your essay? Why does this matter?
