9 China s CCS is still in its infancy Most activities are rather recent Involving a very limited actors Main drivers are almost exclusively in expert circles No elaborated policy exists so far to promote CCS

10 China s confidence in CCS depends on foreign successful experiences CCS is unproven CCS is expensive Long-term leakage risk

13 In power sector, it s obvious Coal System integration Syngas Pulverized coal IGCC SC/USC Postcombustion Precombustion High temperature/pressure Oxy-fuel combustion Large capacity

14 However, it s not always clear Iron ore pelletizing Steel making Lime stone Sintering Iron ore Rolling Washed coal 10% 7% Coking Blast furnace Converter 21% 2% 15% 45% Sinter BF Coke making Converter EF Rolling Breakthrough CCS enabling technologies are needed to achieve largescale CO 2 reduction

15 Conclusions CCS is one of the critical solutions for China s low-carbon future and China s CCS is still in its infancy. China s confidence in CCS depends on its successful demonstration in major leading countries and players worldwide in the field of CCS. CCS enabling technologies should be identified and a parallel & coordinated strategy between CCS and its enabling technologies should be developed.
