The WorldGBC definition of a net zero carbon building: a building that is highly energy efficient and fully powered from on-site and/or off-site renewable energy sources.

Net Zero Task The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment is spearheading a global shift towards aggressive energy efficiency as well as a complete change from fossil fuel based power to renewables. In 2015, 82% of final energy consumption in buildings was supplied by fossil fuels

The emissions task The emissions task: As a signatory to the Paris Climate Change Agreement, Australia has now committed to the global transition to zero net emissions, and to reaching net zero emissions nationally around 2050.

A 2008 global assessment on the cost of carbon abatement by McKinsey showed BUILDING INSULATION (obviously including windows) to be the single most cost effective carbon abatement strategy Source: Rosenfeld, A & Mcauliffe, Patrick. (2008). Opportunities in the Building Sector: Managing Climate Change /

A 2010 similar assessment by Climateworks placed residential new building envelope upgrades 7 th in the Top 10 Most cost effective carbon mitigation strategies for Australia Source: Accessed

The latest data reveals Australia has gone backwards on energy efficiency, leaving it ranked the worst performing major developed country in the world. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) 2018 International Energy Efficiency Scorecard was released recently and ranks Australia 18 th among the world s 25 largest energy users, a fall from its 16 th place position in the 2016 ranking. According to the report: Australia lags behind developing nations like India, Indonesia, and China.

Luke Menzel, chief executive of Australia s Energy Efficiency Council, said the poor standing reflects a lack of broad engagement on the topic and policy inertia at the government level. Luke Menzel would like to see clear guidance from the government on efficiency measures that would lead to improvements such as a greater uptake of energy efficient building products something which has been adopted by 80 per cent of the world but is not currently in place in Australia. In Australia we re very focused on the supply side of the market. Some changes are exciting and sexy new tech like smart home automation systems. Other things are more boring like making sure you ve got double-glazed windows but we still don t get it, he said.

The cost of electricity has increased 120% Since the McKinsey report in 2008.

The cost of gas increased more than 180% Between 2003 & 2013 Source: Accessed

A building is the system itself Windows are but one part of that system to be optimised.

Building efficiencies are delivered at the whole system level Window performance is one of the single most cost efficient ways to save money and mitigate climate change

As energy costs rise High performance windows deliver greater cost and comfort benefits

Window size is the most significant factor in life cycle impact, double or single glazed is next most important, frame type next and window style next. Forest and Wood products research and Development Corporation

It is often wrongly assumed that insulated glazing is only for cold climates. IGUs deliver best performance levels in both U-value and SHGC in all climates. This facilitates higher performance for all climates, especially in heated and air conditioned homes. Source: Accessed

Glass Insulation Market: Global Forecast until 2021 The market is projected to reach $58.71 billion by The growth is driven by increasing demand for energy-efficient products from the construction industry. The IGU segment is the quickest-rising The non-residential construction segment is the quickest-increasing The Asia Pacific (APAC) area led the overall glass insulation market

USA As far as energy efficiency About 90 percent of windows are double-glazed, low-e glazing is on about percent of windows, and gas-filled windows went from 10 percent of the market in 2006 to about 40 percent in Ed Hudson, the director of marketing research with the Home Innovation Research Lab,

UK & EU the trend for highly glazed buildings, conservatories and orangeries has grown worldwide in modern architecture. These changes in design, and a focus from consumers on energy efficiency and the demand for better design e.g. thermal performance has put pressure on industry to respond to these requirements. Source: Green Public Procurement Windows and External Doors Report for the European Commission DG-Environment by JRC IPTS, Accessed: 2/08/18 at:

UK & EU In relation to glazing types, triple glazing is becoming the standard across middle Europe three-layer glass with a U-value of 0.6 W/m2K will be used increasingly, becoming the norm in Scandinavian countries in recent years and growing rapidly in Germany. Source: Green Public Procurement Windows and External Doors Report for the European Commission DG-Environment by JRC IPTS, Accessed: 2/08/18 at:

Australia It is recommended that double-glazed windows are used together with external wall, ceiling and floor insulation, to reduce the thermal and ultimately auxiliary energy (provided by space heating or conditioning devices) required to maintain thermal comfort. Source: International High- Performance Built Environment Conference A Sustainable Built Environment Conference 2016 Series (SBE16), ihbe 2016 Cost benefit analysis of simulated thermal energy improvements made to existing older South Australian houses David M Whaleya*, Timothy O Learyb, Bashar Al-Saedia AND T. 25 Status quo perception needs to change This quote from the Subtropical Design in South East Queensland policy from the SEQ Regional Plan demonstrates the thinking at work: So benign is the climate in subtropical South East Queensland (SEQ) that in SEQ the need to artificially cool or heat habitable spaces is much less pressing than it is elsewhere.
