8 PureCell Model 400 Solution How Does A Fuel Cell Work? 1 3 Anode As hydrogen flows into the fuel cell anode, a catalyst layer on the anode helps to separate the hydrogen atoms into protons (hydrogen ions) and electrons. External Circuit The electrons cannot pass through this electrolyte and, therefore, must flow through an external circuit in the form of electric current. This current can power an electric load. 2 4 Electrolyte The electrolyte in the center allows only the protons to pass through the electrolyte to the cathode side of the fuel cell. Cathode As oxygen flows into the fuel cell cathode, another catalyst layer helps the oxygen, protons, and electrons combine to produce pure water and heat. 8
9 PureCell Model 400 Solution Process Overview 1 Fuel Processor 2 Fuel Cell Stack 3 Power Conditioner Converts natural gas fuel to hydrogen Generates DC power from hydrogen and air Converts DC power to high-quality AC power Electric Output: 400 kw, 480V, 60 Hz Fuel Input* (LHV): Natural gas 3.79 MMBtu/hr Heat Recovery*: High-Grade up to 250 F (120 C) 0.59 MMBtu/hr Low-Grade up to 140 F (60 C) 0.96 * Beginning-of-life values 9
