2 Illinois Landfill Projections of Disposal Capacity as of January 1, 2014 Reporting period for waste disposal: January 1 to December 31, 2013 Reporting date for landfill capacity: January 1, 2014 This report has been prepared for the Governor of the State of Illinois and the General Assembly In accordance with Section 4 of the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act. Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Bureau of Land Division of Land Pollution Control Waste Reduction and Compliance Section 1021 North Grand Avenue East P.O. Box Springfield, IL July 2014
3 Introduction Illinois Landfill Projections of Disposal Capacity is the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's annual report regarding the expected disposal capacity available for municipal waste at Illinois landfills. Illinois municipal waste landfills are required to report to the Illinois EPA the quantities of solid waste they receive each year, and to calculate and report the amount of remaining capacity existing on the first day of the following year. The Illinois Solid Waste Management Act requires the Illinois EPA to publish this report and to present the data on a regional basis. For this report, the Illinois EPA utilizes its seven administrative regions. During calendar year 2013, 42 landfills reported receiving 45,094,197 gate cubic yards of waste and a combined capacity of 947,107,568 gate cubic yards. Dividing waste disposed during 2013 by remaining capacity reported on January 1, 2014, indicates a statewide landfill life expectancy of 21 years at current disposal rates. Landfill capacity, however, is subject to adjustments due to changes in waste generation rates, landfill expansions, and new landfills. The Illinois regions range from a low of 11 years of current landfill life in Region 2, to a high of 50 years of landfill life in Region 7. See Table 1.
