Welcome. Thank you for joining us! Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) Study Implementation Workshop June 24, 2014 Lower Mississippi River Watershed Management Organization

Tonight s Agenda 6:30 Welcome and Introductions 6:35 Overview and outcomes of WRAPS project 7:00 Break into small groups by lake 7:10 Small Group Exercise/Discussion 8:15 Reconvene and Discuss 8:25 Celebrate our progress (with cake!)

Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategies (WRAPS) Project funded by the MPCA Includes five lakes: Sunfish(City of Sunfish Lake) IMPAIRED Pickerel Lake (Lilydale) IMPAIRED Thompson(W. St. Paul) IMPAIRED Rogers (Mendota Heights) Augusta (Mendota Heights) IMPAIRED Outcome of study: TMDL or protection strategy for phosphorus reduction

Where does the phosphorus come from? External Sources Stormwaterrunoff from hard (impervious) surfaces Leaves & grass clippings Fertilizers Pet/animal waste Soil erosion Septic systems

Where does the phosphorus come from? Internal Sources Die-off of aquatic plants releases phosphorus to the lake water Curlyleafpondweed is invasive plant that dies off in early summer, fueling algal blooms

Where does the phosphorus come from? Internal Sources Phosphorus can be stored in lake bottom sediments and released when oxygen levels are low P P P P P P P

General Lake Diagnoses Sunfish (City of Sunfish Lake)- INTERNAL LOAD Augusta (Mendota Heights)- INTERNAL LOAD

Lake Augusta- Mendota Heights 44 acre lake Deep lake (max depth 33 feet) Land-locked (high overflow outlet) Watershed = 410 acres Avg. residence time = 3 years

Sunfish Lake- City of Sunfish Lake 51 acre lake Deep lake (max depth 32 feet) Land-locked (high overflow outlet) Watershed = 235 acres Avg. residence time = 3.2 years

Targeting Internal Load Primary Strategy for Sunfish and Augusta Alum Treatment- eligible for CWF grant funding

General Lake Diagnoses Sunfish (City of Sunfish Lake)- INTERNAL LOAD Augusta (Mendota Heights)- INTERNAL LOAD Thompson (W. St. Paul)- EXTERNAL LOAD

Thompson Lake- West St. Paul 7 acre lake/wetland Shallow lake (avg depth 5-6 feet) Watershed = 182 acres Avg. water residence time = 0.3 years

Thompson Lake- recommended actions Construct stormwatertreatment pond at primary inlet entering north end of the lake Look for opportunities for implementation of new BMPs, retrofits and ongoing O&M for existing BMPs to get equivalent level of stormwater treatment

Thompson Lake- aquatic plant management Moderate densities of Curlyleafpondweed (shown in red on figure) Continued monitoring is recommended

General Lake Diagnoses Sunfish (City of Sunfish Lake)- INTERNAL LOAD Augusta (Mendota Heights)- INTERNAL LOAD Thompson (W. St. Paul)- EXTERNAL LOAD Pickerel Lake (Lilydale)-RIVER INFLUENCE + EXTERNAL LOAD

Pickerel Lake 115 acres Shallow lake (max depth 11 feet) Ivy Falls Creek drains most of watershed 0.4-year avg. water residence time

1,320 acre watershed Includes Pickerel four cities Lake Land uses includes park (Lilydale Regional Park), residential and institutional.

Pickerel Lake- diagnosis Water quality heavily influenced by flood waters from Mississippi River Mississippi River floods about once every 10 years

Pickerel Lake- diagnosis When flooding doesn t occur, primary TP sources are Runoff from Ivy Falls Creek watershed Wetland directly west of Pickerel Lake Bluff erosion

Pickerel Lake- recommended actions Ravine/bluff stabilization in Ivy Falls Creek and Lilydale Regional Park Increased monitoring of Pickerel Lake and TP sources Look for opportunities for implementation of new BMPs, retrofits and ongoing O&M for BMPs

General Lake Diagnoses Sunfish (City of Sunfish Lake)- INTERNAL LOAD Augusta (Mendota Heights)- INTERNAL LOAD Thompson (W. St. Paul)- EXTERNAL LOAD Pickerel Lake (Lilydale)-RIVER INFLUENCE + EXTERNAL LOAD Rogers (Mendota Heights)- PROTECTION

Rogers Lake- Mendota Heights 107 acre lake Shallow lake (max depth 8 feet) Watershed = 414 acres Land use = low density residential, park, golf course, highway Avg. residence time = 0.6 years

Rogers Lake Water Quality Concentration (µg/l) Secchi Depth Standard(1.0 m) Total Phosphorus Standard(60 µg/l) Chlorophyll a Standard(20 µg/l) Secchi Depth (m) Total Phosphorus Chlorophyll a Secchi Disk Transparency

Rogers Lake- recommended actions Look for opportunities for implementation of new BMPs, retrofits and ongoing O&M for BMPs Continued monitoring (water quality and aquatic plants) Herbicide treatments, as needed
