The goal was to increase the recycling efforts of the students, parents, teachers, and surrounding members in the community. By informing the students of the damage being done to the earth, the seed was planted to excite them about saving the planet. The objective was for the students to learn about conserving the world's scarce natural resources by using recycled materials, minimizing the materials going into landfills, decreasing pollution, and how recycling saves energy by reducing the need to process new materials. After teaching the students the positives of recycling, every class in the school was provided with a blue recycling bin to collect all plastics, aluminum along with a green bin to collect all paper and cardboard. Each day the recycling crew, which was put together by Ms. Perry. She oversees the students as they go around the school and collect all of the recycling. All of the plastic bottles
3 and cans are scanned into a computer to account for the number of items being recycled. All of the paper and cardboard is gathered in one area and the custodians transfer them into the recycling center. At the end of each week, Ms. Perry calls Waste Management and they come out and empty the container. The primary outcome was to cause a change in the school s behavior and help make a positive impact on environment, by decreasing the amount of paper the school was throwing away. Due to the new recycling program at Ruediger, the school has decreased the amount of trash being thrown away and increased its recycling. Additional Project Information The project integrated green school activities by the students learning how and what to recycle. Ruediger's recycling program can be replicated at other locations because it is student driven, you only need containers to hold the recyclable materials, and getting a multicompartment recyling bin. Increased Student Achievement The evidence of increased student achievement was evident by the influx of recyclable materials being brought to the school. Students began bringing in plastic bottles, cans, paper (newspaper and magazines), and even sorting their trash in the cafeteria. Ruediger even had an increase in the the pounds of recycling from the previous years. As of now, Ruediger has recycled over 30,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans. It is very obvious that the green school intervention has played a large role in helping Ruediger become more earth friendly and a recycling center for the community. Number of people
