Phone Number (813) * * kempa@leonschools.net Nominee Project (Student, Teacher, Class) Category * Project Teacher Category * Theme Recycling Project Summary Ms. Perry implemented the project of recycling various types of plastic, aluminum cans, and paper products. The goal was to increase the recycling efforts of the students, parents, teachers, and surrounding members in the community. By informing the students of the damage being done to the earth, the seed was planted to excite them about saving the planet. The objective was for the students to learn about conserving the world's scarce natural resources by using recycled materials, minimizing the materials going into landfills, decreasing pollution, and how recycling saves energy by reducing the need to process new materials. After teaching the students the positives of recycling, every class in the school was provided with a blue recycling bin to collect all plastics, aluminum along with a green bin to collect all paper and cardboard. Each day the recycling crew, which was put together by Ms. Perry. She oversees the students as they go around the school and collect all of the recycling. All of the plastic bottles

and cans are scanned into a computer to account for the number of items being recycled. All of the paper and cardboard is gathered in one area and the custodians transfer them into the recycling center. At the end of each week, Ms. Perry calls Waste Management and they come out and empty the container. The primary outcome was to cause a change in the school s behavior and help make a positive impact on environment, by decreasing the amount of paper the school was throwing away. Due to the new recycling program at Ruediger, the school has decreased the amount of trash being thrown away and increased its recycling. Additional Project Information The project integrated green school activities by the students learning how and what to recycle. Ruediger's recycling program can be replicated at other locations because it is student driven, you only need containers to hold the recyclable materials, and getting a multicompartment recyling bin. Increased Student Achievement The evidence of increased student achievement was evident by the influx of recyclable materials being brought to the school. Students began bringing in plastic bottles, cans, paper (newspaper and magazines), and even sorting their trash in the cafeteria. Ruediger even had an increase in the the pounds of recycling from the previous years. As of now, Ruediger has recycled over 30,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans. It is very obvious that the green school intervention has played a large role in helping Ruediger become more earth friendly and a recycling center for the community. Number of people

DIRECTLY involved in the project implementation (implementation team) Number of >200 person-hours spent on the project. Number of people directly reached by the project (active participants and those were directly affected). Number of 401-1,200 people INDIRECTLY reached by the project (passive recipients, those who

heard about the project). Project History Project just started this year. Alignment to Anecdotal. Curriculum (Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS)) economic benefits: Cost Savings (excluding donations) social benefits: Parental Measurable evidence of one of the following: outreach to parents through newsletters; outreach to parents through events in the community; outreach to Involvement One new community partnership established. social benefits: Community Partnerships

Energy Savings Water Savings Anecdotal evidence of waste reduction Waste Reduction Approximately 1,000 how many pounds of recycled materials were collected. Green Cleaning Products improved Outdoor Air Quality by reducing bus idling minutes (number of buses x number

of minutes of idling = reduced bus idling minutes) or using cleaner-burning alternative fuels Reductions in Miles Driven to School: Reductions in the number of car miles driven to school by students and teachers walking or biking or using walking school buses Improved Schoolyard Environment Litter Removal:

Miles of river, coastline or roadway cleared of litter. Increased Productivity (reduced absenteeism, visits to clinic, sick days) student Volunteerism arising from, but not directly related to, the Green School activities. Service service learning hours Learning: Service Learning Hours (# of students x # of hours of direct

service per student) Anecdotal evidence increased student achievement. Describe how student achievement gains were measured All information Ashley Kemp was correct at the time of submission and is provided in good faith. *
