2 The Project Reducing Fuel Poverty: Heat Storage Innovation

3 Project Partners Sunamp was founded to respond to the need for low carbon heating and hot water systems in domestic and commercial settings. Using Phase Change Materials, Sunamp have developed an efficient, energy dense heat storage system, packaged into modular batteries. Sunamp is the project lead. Castle Rock Edinvar is one of Scotland's leading housing associations and is a Scottish Charity and part of the Places for People Group. Owns/manages over 6000 homes and works with over 8000 customers across 8 local authority areas - working closely with 2 subsidiary companies to achieve our vision. As well as a strong business ethos we're an ethically minded green organisation - tackling environmental challenges through our energy strategy. East Lothian Housing Association (ELHA) was founded in 1988 with the aim of providing good quality affordable housing within East Lothian. We are a charity and do not operate to make a profit. While our early work was in building new homes for rent, we now own and manage a wide variety of housing, all in East Lothian. Solar PV partner Edison Energy. We are the market leaders in the design, development and installation of photovoltaic panels and with a specialist workforce, we focus on complete contract management, reporting and control systems that engages at all levels with our customers, and the community.

4 Why focus on fuel poverty? The Scottish Government have pledged to ensure that by November 2016, so far as is reasonably practicable, people are not living in fuel poverty in Scotland. Between 2012 and 2013 fuel poverty increased by 4 percentage points from 35.2% to 39.1%. This represents an increase of around 100,000 households from the previous year, reaching 940,000 in The main causes are a combination of poor energy efficiency of the dwelling, low disposable household income and the high price of domestic fuel. The Progress Update on the Fuel Poverty Statement states that for every 5% increase in energy prices then as many as 46,000 households in Scotland (2%) are pushed into fuel poverty, all else being equal. Of the three main policy areas affecting fuel poverty, two of them ie household income and energy regulation, are matters reserved to the UK Government, while energy efficiency is a matter devolved to the Scottish Government.

7 The Innovation Social Landlords have a duty to address the Energy Efficiency of their stock and achieve statutory targets by 2020 (EESSH). Castle Rock Edinvar will invest more than 3,000,000 every year for the next five years to address this challenge. Typical solutions include: Condensing boilers; Double/secondary glazing; Heating controls; Storage heaters; Loft insulation top-up; Floor insulation; Compact fluorescent lighting; Solid wall insulation (external). This project enables us to go beyond these typical solutions and develop approaches that can transform outcomes for individuals and families. Through the integration of advanced renewable technology (Fuel Cell Micro CHP, PV, Heat Pumps) and the introduction of compact heat storage (Sunamp Heat Batteries) we will be able maximise the efficiency of local energy production and align this with actual needs.
