Edinburgh and Surrounding Towns Heat Energy Action through Thermal storage Saving Money through PV plus Heat Battery Thermal Storage
EastHeat: more than just PV COMPONENT ONE: Funded PV on the Roof 850 PV rooftops installed Two major housing associations (ELHA & CRE) 5.6M from a Chinese investor Delivered by Edison Energy Rural, Semi-Rural and Urban Settings Average system size kwp Tenant electricity savings of over 160 a year COMPONENT TWO: Thermal Energy Storage in the Home 700 homes with Sunamp Heat Battery thermal storage with over 500 linked to PV 3.2M from Local Energy Challenge Fund as a large R&D Trial + 800K from partners Delivered by Sunamp with Edison Energy, Castle Rock Edinvar, ELHA & R3 Additional tenant saving of estimated a year in reduced hot water/heating cost
What's the link? PV Alone Only 30% of rooftop generation is typically used in the home 70% is exported to the grid No benefit to the tenant With SunampPV Excess generation is diverted and stored Stored as thermal energy Later used for hot water Saving gas or electricity By combining PV and thermal energy storage, we can deliver substantially increased tenant benefit: up to 550 per year combined saving on domestic electricity and gas or electric hot water.
Uniquely links PV & Combi Boiler Excess PV generation stored in SunampPV (below) feeds pre-heated water to Combi boiler (above). Saves up to 75% of annual gas usage for hot water. Unique energy storage link from PV to combi. Telematics via GPRS provide status, monitoring, control and remote firmware update. Over 400 homes in the trial have PV, gas combi & SunampPV
Also great for all-electric PV home Twin SolarCache* units (top) divert excess PV-generated electricity to Twin SunampPV units (below) replacing a large 210 litre hot water tank in an allelectric household Diversion starts from just 50 watts Stored heat is later used for hot water production Cold water flows in here And is instantly heated to flow out at over 12 litres per minute above 50 o C Any extra heat needed is topped up overnight on low-carbon, low-cost, offpeak Economy 7 electricity at 2.8kW per SunampPV SunampPV stores up to 5 kwh of heat and loses just kwh/day (½ to ¼ of a hot water tank) * Other 'Self-Consumption' devices used in the trial include Power Diverter, Solic 200 and Solar iboost Up to 100 homes in EastHeat are all-electric with PV + SunampPV
Why not just use hot water tanks? Retrofit into small homes The 400+ gas combi homes didn't already have a hot water tank where would a new one fit? SunampPV stores as much heat as a 100 litre hot water tank, but in ⅓ the space Space can be found for a small unit (under the sink or tucked in a corner) SunampPV internally uses Heat Batteries which stores heat in Phase Change Materials (PCM) Sunamp PCM is four times more energy dense than hot water It's also: Safe (non-toxic, non-flammable) Stable (>14,000 cycles tested with no degradation or capacity loss) Sustainable (widely available, doesn't contribute to deforestation, and has endof-life second use as runway de-icer) Ultra low heat loss saves kwh/year 530 mm 700 mm 300 mm
How do the savings add up? Example from all-electric home: 4 persons * 45 litres/day = 8.8 kwh hot water demand = 3200 kwh/yr Heat loss of 2.5 kwh/day (old cylinder being replaced) = 900 kwh/yr Total hot water input energy need = 4100 kwh/yr Cost at 15p/kWh 615 SunampPV - heat loss of 0.58 kwh/day = 212 kwh/yr Total hot water input energy now needed = 3400 kwh/yr Cost at 15p/kWh (with no Solar) 510 saving 105 So, even without PV, replacing an old hot water tank + immersion heater with SunampPV saves over 100/year! Adding PV: 4 kwp of PV delivering 3600 kwh/year of generated electricity 30% used for appliances, etc = 1080 kwh * 15p/kWh saving % left over, of that ¾ diverted = 1890 kwh saving 283 Saving on heat losses = = 688 kwh saving 103 Total saving 548 Savings for gas combi homes, lower user homes or where less PV is fitted will be lower

Breakthrough Energy Storage Storage is key to unlock Renewables and Demand Response. Sunamp has the World s first fully practical Heat Battery: Modular, Scalable, Stackable, Rackable 4x energy storage density versus hot water tanks Proprietary Phase Change Material (PCM) Non-toxic, non-flammable, stable, available materials Reliable: >10,000 cycles with no degradation of capacity 10 year warranty on heat battery cells in Sunamp appliances Levelized Cost of Storage below 1p/kWh achievable High power: Can supply >30 kw for high flow rate hot water Energy efficient: Near 100% efficient charge/discharge (minute 1) Class-leading low heat loss rate (½ - ¼ of hot water tanks) Ideal for all cases where heat or hot water are the target final use. Especially where space is tight or modularity is key. Smaller and ~½ price of Lithium Ion battery appliances Synergy: electrical battery for electricity, heat battery for heat Modular kwh 30 kw PCM 58 C 5-80 C 150 Wh/L

SunampStack + Heat Pump Heat battery allows off-peak electricity or renewable electricity and heat pumping (3x efficiency) to work together; Replaces large water tanks with compact, modular, and scalable solutions; It can be easily tailored to satisfy different requirements Proven in field trial with social housing associations in UK First large-scale roll-outs now in planning phase for 2016 Central Heating Heat Pump SunampStack Hot Water
SunampStack + Chillers Heat battery allows recovery of heat from chillers that is usually wasted to ambient, e.g. for air conditioning, data centres cooling, supermarkets cool cabinets; Hot water can then be delivered by SunampStack for central heating or sanitary hot water services, e.g. in neighbor offices, homes, industrial processes.
