The EUREKA Cluster for low-carbon energy technologies ACHIEVEMENTS & TARGETS An industry driven approach member of the EUREKA network
A WORD FROM OUR CHAIRMAN EUROGIA, the EUREKA Cluster for low carbon energy technologies, will soon successfully finish its second mandate. This preparation document is to present the achievements of EUROGIA+ ( ) and the application of EUROGIA2020 ( ). Founded in 2004 with the support of 4 EUREKA Member States (Spain, Norway, France, the Netherlands), EUROGIA+, the EUREKA Cluster for low carbon energy technologies supports and promotes international partnerships devising original projects in low carbon energy technologies. EUROGIA+ covers the entire energy value chain from all forms of primary energy sources (except nuclear), through transportation and distribution, all the way to efficiency in end-use whether industrial or for individual consumers; it also includes tranverse technologies such as materials, IT or manufacturing technologies that support the energy system; the latter aspect has brought non-energy companies such as EADS and Turk Telekom to take an active role in the Board of EUROGIA+. Today EUROGIA+ is supported by 17 EUREKA Member States and labeled 28 projects, covering a broad cross section of the EUROGIA+ Whitebook, from offshore windmills to CCS, from smart grids to new materials. Having successfully completed 5 years, EUROGIA+ proposes to continue its activities under the name of EUROGIA2020. In order to address the challenges that the current world energy system is facing, EUROGIA2020 must promote: Innovative Solutions that will satisfy the growing energy demand Enablers that reduce the negative impacts of energy consumption New technologies that give access to affordable as well as cleaner and safer energy. RAUL MANZANAS EUROGIA+ Chairman 02

EUROGIA+ Decarbonizing Europe through successful cooperation SMEs are playing an increasing role in introducing new technologies. Since 2008, more than 40% of EUROGIA+ project participants were SMEs. The simple and fast application and labelization processes ofeurogia+ are particularly attractive for SMEs. EUROGIA+ programme is open for applications on a continuous basis, with 4 cut-off dates per year and gives flexibility to project proposers to apply at any time of the year for both project outline and full project proposal submissions. The pivotal role of SMEs in innovation is highly acknowledged by EUROGIA+. In addition to applicantfriendly submission processes, EUROGIA+ office gives detailed input to the varying needs of proposers to better prepare for the hearings and for their national funding applications. EUROGIA+ is the only instrument that addresses the SET plan objectives through a bottom-up, industry driven approach EUROGIA : Project Domains As a strategic player fostering energy transition thanks to its strong and diverse industrial network, EUROGIA+ labeled 28 projects covering a broad cross-section of the EUROGIA+ whitebook % New Materials Systems Efficiency Hydro Smart Grids Biomass Wave CCS Solar Wind 05
2020 PROJECT EUROGIA2020 will be dedicated to promoting and facilitating the development of low carbon energy technologies. EUROGIA2020 will be led and promoted by a group of European Energy technology firms representing the largest possible market segments. All energy technologies are included with the exclusion of nuclear. They are supported by the research institutes, public and private, specialised in the accompanying disciplines: geosciences, information technologies, materials, fluid mechanics, marine sciences, electronics, chemical engineering The period will be particularly critical in putting Europe on track to achieve its long term climate goals. The 20/20/20 objectives are likely to be achieved but require tapping only the low hanging fruits (and were helped by a major economic slow-down). Accelerating technology developments in low carbon energy technologies is indispensable both for climate goals in the next period and to position Europe for an economic resurgence. As a result a key goal for Eurogia2020 will be to significantly grow the number of projects. The Eurogia+ Board believes that, during the Eurogia+ mandate, we have only been able to scratch the surface in terms of numbers of companies involved in projects. 06
PROJECT SUCCESS STORY WINDFARMVESSEL Taking Wind Energy to the sea The EUROGIA+ Windfarmvessel project will help offshore wind energy to take the step from a costly idea relying on public funding to a market driven and competitive energy solution. Introducing the next generation of offshore wind turbines. Thanks to a technological process developed within this EUROGIA+ project completed in 2012, expenditures could be consequently reduced. Originally, before the project, the costs of installing an offshore wind turbine could reach 3 times the costs of the same operation on land says Marc Cahay, responsible for the offshore R&D Department at French based company Technip and leader of the project. The offshore building is only possible during a short period of time in the year, when the sea allows, and therefore fast installation is the backbone of Windfarmvessel. For climatic reasons, offshore construction is simply impossible four months a year says Cahay, we need a specific tide, from 1.5 to 3 meters high, to be able to work. The concept of the Windfarmvessel project is to install the wind turbine in the sea only after having assembled it on land. This method ensures the best conditions for the assembling of the wind turbine structure; the current method, building a wind turbine from scratch at sea, not only poses safety and technical challenges but impacts schedule resulting in a lengthy costly process, indicates Cahay. The technology developed in the EUROGIA+ Windfarmvessel project is unique and really a technological prowess. The realisation of the project was only made possible thanks to a tight cooperation between several types of players. Along with Technip, Acciona, the Spanish world leader in renewable and also a wind turbine manufacturer, and DNV, the standard-setter for the wind energy industry, constituted a strong consortium to successfully carry out this EUROGIA+ project. Having received the EUROGIA+ label, Windfarmvessel was funded by Research Council of Norway (RCN), French Finance Ministry (DGCIS) and Spanish Center for Technological Development ( CDTI).
PROJECT SUCCESS STORY SOL ION PV energy conversion and storage project A successful Franco German collaboration EUROGIA+ Sol-Ion project, kicked off in 2008, was successfully completed through the efforts of three industrial partners SAFT, Tenesol and Voltwerk. EUROGIA+ label endorsed the quality of SolIon project and ensured an easy access to French and German public funding. a clear business success. During the first year alone, over 1000 Sol -Ion conversion and storage systems were sold. EUROGIA+ label is a plus and provided an accelerated path towards commercialization.the efficient interface with national authorities developed through EUROGIA+ label enabled project partners to have an easy access to national funding said Christophe Jehoulet from project coordinator company, SAFT. EUROGIA+ Sol Ion project is introducing Liion batteries into PV systems on the largest scale ever tested in Europe. 10 Representatives from energy industry and academia took part in EUROGIA+ information days, brokerage events as well as thematic days. EUROGIA+ was also presented at dozens of energy related conferences. With the great support of national EUREKA offices, EUROGIA+ information days and brokerage events were held in Paris, Madrid, Oslo, Eilat, Istanbul, Prague, Tallinn, Reykjavik, Perpignan, Stavanger and Brussels in order to reach the right audience to build successful projects. 10
EVENTS / Since its debut in 2008, EUROGIA+ organized numerous events across EUREKA Member States. For the first time in cluster s history a joint intercluster information day was organized in Eilat in February 2011 to inform potential project proposers under the auspices of MATIMOP, throughout EUREKA Israeli Chairmanship. Placing decarbonizing Europe and beyond as a top priority, EUROGIA+ gave more focus in 2011 and 2012 to organizing thematic events and conferences tackling the toughest energy questions. The first thematic event was on Marine Renewables in Paris at GdfSuez premises, boosting the strong commitment of French industry in the marine renewable energy sector. A Geothermal thematic event held in Brussels brought together some of the key geothermal energy players in Europe and resulted in several ideas for collaborative projects. Coopetitive Innovation, one of the priorities of EUREKA Turkish chairmanship, was embraced at the event Turkey: Towards a sustainable energy future. This event organized by Turk Telekom in Istanbul brought together representatives from both ICT and Energy Sector. The last EUROGIA+ information day in 2012 was in Prague at the premises of Technology Center ASCR and the event was enlivened by the presence of successful EUREKA project proposers. 11
