Working with Care along the Trans Adriatic Pipeline Route Ulrike Andres, TAP Commercial and Public Affairs Director Clara Risso, TAP Senior Permit Manager Italy TAP linepipe transported in Greece
2 TAP & the Southern Gas Corridor 3,500 km value chain - investment of approx. USD 45 bln
3 TAP in a Nutshell Highest elevation: 1800 m, Potom area in the Albanian mountains Deepest section offshore: 820 m in the strait of Otranto in the Adriatic Sea Can expand from 10 to 20bcm/a 878 km 105 km offshore Built-in physical reverse flow 48 onshore 36 offshore
4 ESIA Process Completed TAP s ESIAs (Environmental and Social Impact Assessments) map-out all possible environmental, cultural or socio-economic impacts of the pipeline and include measures to avoid and mitigate any possible impacts the pipeline may have during and after construction. TAP engaged in transparent and open dialogue with all stakeholders. Changes & re-routings -ESIA Amendments- were submitted to the relevant authorities for approval. Changes were designed to have minimum impact on the environment and the communities along TAP s route. Greece Albania Italy ESIA Submission June 2013 January 2013 March 2012 ESIA Disclosure ESIA Approval September 2014 April 2013 September 2014
5 Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) One concept Current focus on construction and precommissioning Considers lessons learnt from similar projects and industry best practice in addition to commitments made in ESIAs Management system: plan do check amend cycle (in line with ISO 14001) Relevant for lender compliance 9 Environmental Incidents 3 Social Incidents 4 Cultural Heritage Incidents ESMS KPIs Project to Date (16 October 2016)
6 Ecological Management & Biodiversity Protection Baseline flora & fauna ecological surveys undertaken in order to identify, avoid and protect; 1. Internationally protected ecological sites 2. Vulnerable and internationally protected mammals such as wolf, brown bear, otter and European ground squirrel. 3. Vulnerable and internationally protected bird species during breeding and migrating periods. 4. Important flora species and sensitive habitats Construction schedule designed and planned to consider the major ecological constraints identified
7 Greece Recent Progress 550 km 22 block valve stations 1 compressor station 8 camp sites Line pipes & bends continue to arrive in Kavala, Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli (since May 2016) 150 km cleared, 75 km strung, 51 km welded. Crossing 1,693 roads, 722 rivers and 20 railways (major and minor crossings). 10,170 land plots
8 Greece Innovation Example Advanced Rock Trencher Machine Minimises trench excavation. Guarantees safe, clean and efficient operations. VIDEO link:
9 Albania Recent Progress 215 km 8 BVS & 1 landfall station 1 compressor station 6 camp sites Line pipes & bends continue to arrive in Durrës (since April 2016) 40 km cleared, 38 km stung, 31 km welded Crossing 555 roads, 514 rivers and 1 railway (major and minor crossings) 8,700 land plots
10 Albania Innovation Example Access roads and bridges rehabilitation Slope stabilisation 180 km + access roads will be newly built or upgraded (in two phases). Two new bridges have been built & 40 bridges refurbished. Over 97% of access roads & bridges (combined progress, phase I) are completed; approx. 90% local content. Archeological find: a 40cm limestone column capital, dating back to the 6 th century AD.
11 Albania Innovation Example Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) 1.1 km stretch hosting the Seman river, a railway & a road. Avoids trenching, reduces excavation works and limits impact on ecosystems. Used for the first time in Albania.
12 Italy Recent Progress 8 km 1 landfall station 1 pipeline receiving terminal 1.5 km micro tunnel Works started in May 2016 Offshore surveys conducted (June 2016) and ongoing Olive trees in microtunnel area prepared for moving Perfomed UXO and archaeological surveys in Fanfula site, geological survey conducted on the San Foca beach early October Crossing 15 asphalt roads (major and minor crossings) 190 land plots
13 Italy Innovation Example Microtunnel The landfall in Italy will be built using a microtunnel in order to avoid the impact on the beach 1.5 km microtunnel Exit offshore at 27 m water depth Not touching Posidonia seagrass Invisible from the coast Pipeline receiving terminal Interception cabin Onshore pipeline Microtunnel Offshore pipeline 8,2 Km 1,5 Km 45 Km
14 Italy Innovation Example Olive trees management Xylella treatement: spraying and pruning of olive trees along TAP s route in Italy Leftover wood resulted from pruning has been donated to local craftsmen who created everyday kitchen tools. Moving of olive trees planned to start in the upcoming weeks
15 Italy Innovation Example Pipeline Receiving Terminal (PRT) Approx. 12 ha land plot area in the municipality of Melendugno Different buildings will occupy an area of 3,500 square meters (reduced by almost 40% in size during stakeholder consultation) PRT will be integrated into surrounding landscape, limited visual impact No emissions during normal operations. 3D model of the PRT station, Italy
16 Italy Innovation Example Marine Litter Programme SEI (social & environmental investment) project for marine litter debris study and the cleaning of beaches and sea bottom. More than 800,000 will be used for scientific research of the marine litter phenomenon to enable environment protection. The project is undertaken in partnership with the local unit of CONISMA (National Consortium of Universities on Marine Sciences) - University of Salento. Area of interest: 30 km coastline stretching from Lecce to Melendugno, including the National environment reserve of «Le Cesine» (managed by WWF Italy). Beneficiaries: citizens, tourists, fishermen, municipalities, beach owners. Project aim Map out and collect marine debris as a contribution to the environmental enhancement and tourism attractiveness of the area. Raise awareness and promote education on the marine litter issue.
17 Italy Innovation Examples Social and Environmental Investment (SEI) Projects In July 2016, we launched TAPstart. The programme provides 200,000 to associations and non-profit organisations in Melendugno for projects aiming to improve the quality of life through cultural, social and environmental initiatives. TAP aims to launch further calls for submissions twice a year during the pipeline construction period, for a total of 1.4m. In October 2016, the MENA (Master of Excellence in New Nutrition) programme was launched. Aiming to support local economy and tourism, 15 restaurants in the Melendugno area will receive high-level 3 month training in restaurant management, cooking techniques and the transformation of food products. Applications can be submitted until 7 December 2016.
