3 5 Water management through the ages With the growth of the city of Rotterdam the importance of water management also grew. The water authorities were responsible for: maintaining the dikes for flood protection keeping dry feet in the low lying polders and the city 6 Water management in the last century 1950 s Rebuilding the city and growth of the harbour s Detoriation of the water quality 1970 s Law on surface water pollution 1980 s: Building of waste water treatment plants of Kralingse Veer and Dokhaven 3
