District cooling as a part of combined heat and power production Urban energy at its best International Power Summit , Cannes, France Atte Kallio, Project Manager
Contents Introduction Key Figures District cooling as a part of combined heat and power production Benefits of district cooling Case Pasila - Underground district cooling station Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 2
Helsingin Energia As one of the largest energy companies in Finland. Supplies electricity to approx. 400,000 customers. Covers more than 90 percent of the heat demand of the capital city with district heat. Europes fastest growing and 3rd largest supplier of district cooling. Among the services are the design, projecting and maintenance of energy production and distribution systems. Also responsible for the outdoor lighting systems in Helsinki. Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 3

Combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) production Helsingin Energia generates electricity, heat and cooling in the same process. The combined generation achieves high efficiency, in other words more energy is gained from the same amount of fuel. Combined generation reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Helsingin Energia has won the EU-parliament Regional Awards -prize as the leading specialist in energy efficiency and many other recognitions. CCHP is the key for clean air in Helsinki! 9 A quarter of Finland s District Heat Helsingin Energia is the largest energy company in Finland producing, distributing and selling district heat and cooling. More than 90 % of the capital's heating requirement is covered by district heat. Share of CHP is more than 90 % Overall efficiency is more than 90 % 90 / 90 / 90 philosophy Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 9
Reliable heating The distribution reliability of district heat is high and the cut-offs are rare. The heating network is designed so that district heat can be distributed via several routes. The most important transmission pipelines are located in tunnels. Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 10
District heat customers and connection power Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 11
District cooling District cooling is expanding in Helsinki. It substitutes locally produced cooling. It saves energy and conserves the environment. It is produced in an environmentally benign way. Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 12

Benefits of district cooling Customer can concentrate on its key businesses Specialized energy company will take care of the cooling production Maintenance and repair are outsourced Risks related to own, building specific, production will be removed Space is freed to productive use Predictable, less fluctuating lifecycle costs Customer Cooling capacity can be increased as the demand appears Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 25
Benefits of district cooling Clever integrated solutions lead to better overall efficiency Multi-generation: electricity, heat and cooling are produced simultaneously as eco-efficiently as possible Savings in greenhouse gases and other emissions Centralized production with optimized and well maintained production units result in higher efficiencies Up to 90 % fuel conversion efficiency Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 26
Benefits of district cooling Primary energy of DC in Helsinki is unused fuel! The primary energy factor of production shows how many units of fuel are needed to produce one unit of energy. A lower production factor means better efficiency ratio and lower fuel consumption. Helsingin Energia Helsingin Energia 27
