Energy Efficiency in Buildings Welcome and Introduction 23th September Toronto/Ontario, Canada Thorsten Gusek energiewaechter GmbH by order of Energy Efficiency Export Initiative sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology
Agenda Governmental Strategies and Projects to Rise Energy Efficiency Overview on German Activities Smart City Development: Theoretical Approach and Pilot Projects Energy Efficiency Export Initiative and the Participating German Companies
Governmental Strategies and Projects to Rise Energy Efficiency Overview on German Activities
Energiewende Goals At a Glance 100% CO2-Emissions Renewable Energies 60% 100% Energy Consumption 80% 60% 50% 20% 10% 18% Source: adapted from BMWi
Energiewende Action Plan Overall concept Energy policy for growth and wealth Goals Secure, affordable and environmentally friendly energy supply Dimensions Grid Power Plants RE EnEff Research Federal, state, local authorities & EU: Framework Actors Economy / Companies: Private Investments, Business Segments Public / Citizens: Acceptance, Contribution, Investments Monitoring Annual Report & every three years Progress Report Source: adapted from BMWi
Energiewende Challenges Increasing electricity prices Willingness / ability to pay for renewable energies or technologies to increase energy efficiency Distribution of costs between energy-intensive and other industries Decreasing international competitiveness of the industrial location Germany? Social equity support for low-income households? Grid Stability Costs and acceptance of grid expansion to secure energy supplies
German Energy Savings Strategies Aims of the energy concept of the German Federal Government (September 2010) New standard Climate Neutral Buildings to reduce primary energy consumption of buildings by 80% (2050) Doubling of refurbishment rate (1%2%) New financial incentives ( CO2-building Refurbishment Program, Market Incentive Program to integrate RES in buildings, Energy Refurbishment Program, etc.) Energy Efficiency Funds Harmonization of legal framework for Energy-Contracting Source: BMWi
KfW: energy efficient construction and refurbishment Energy efficient construction: Long-term loan for the construction or the first purchase of a KfW Efficiency House 70, 55 and 40 Maximal loan of Euro for one housing unit Effective interest rate from 1,41% on Repayment bonus for KfW Efficiency Houses 55 and 40 (up to 10% of the loan amount) Source: KfW 2013
KfW: energy efficient construction and refurbishment Energy efficient refurbishment: Promotion of a comprehensive refurbishment that leads to a KfWEfficiency House 115, 100, 85, 70, 55 or monument Investment grants up to Euro for one housing unit Loans up to Euro (for one housing unit) or Euro for individual measures at favorable interest rates (effective interest rate of 1,00%) Promotion of specific energetic individual measures up to 10% of the eligible costs or rather Euro for one housing unit. Energetic individual measures are considered e.g. insulation, modernization of the windows or the heating system Source: KfW 2013
CO2 building refurbishment program Summary Roughly 9,3bn Euro were allowed in public funds Between 2006 and June 2013, KfWapproved about 1.2m loan and grant applications with an overall volume of 57bn. This lead to private investments of about 135bn Euro Over 3m housing units have been renovated or built energy efficiently, together with municipal projects As a consequence of these construction and refurbishment measures, CO2- emissions could be reduced by some 6,5m tons annually Source: BMVBS 2013
Further initiatives of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Open Dialog Forum Energy Efficiency Open platform for discussion and dialog Participation of representatives of different political and economic sectors (Federation of German Industry (BDI), Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, German Engineering Federation etc) After the first session (April 2013), the different participating associations declared to take a more active role in the promotion of energy efficiency Quelle: BMWi 2013
Energy performance certificate for buildings For residential buildings Valid through ten years Permits a comparison with other typical buildings and facilitates an approximate estimation of future energy costs The certificate can be accompanied by modernization recommendations for the energetic improvement of the building Certificate of energy use and of energy demand Sources: BMVBS 2013, dena 2013
Energy performance certificate for buildings Energy demand (modeled usage) Calculated according to general building factors and designated usage Building size and materials used Projected usage and HVAC systems Climate conditions Energy use (actual usage) Based on actual usage data of at least the last three calendar years Normalized against weather data Source: pictures dena
Smart City Development: Theoretical Approach and Pilot Projects
Smart City New Definition of Urban Development Smart City Environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive process Combines systematically and intelligently information and communication technologies (ICT) with central elements of urban development such as transport systems, energy infrastructure, and other public services
Morgenstadt by Fraunhofer-Society Joint research project towards smart and sustainable cities Energy: Renewable energies, energy efficient technologies and communicating energy grids will become the drive-train of tomorrow s cities. Buildings: Newtechnologies allow buildings to communicate with their local environment and to produce more energy than they consume. Production& Logistics: In the future city transportation and handlingof goods will happen fluently within intelligentstructures of production and distribution.
Morgenstadt by Fraunhofer-Society Mobility: Highly efficient mass transit systems or emission free mobilityon-demand solutions represent some of the groundbreaking solutions to be analyzed and developed further. Information & Communication:Technologies (geographic information processing, wireless internet and smart-phones) enable communication between devices, buildings, vehicles and people. Urban Processes & Organization: In the city of the future, life and workwill be characterized by short distances andby thefreedom torealize individual life-and workstyles. At the same time people will have multiple opportunities for participating in decisions on the development of their city.
Smart City Central Aspects Central aspects Energy efficiency (energy management systems and smart grids) Consumption control through intelligent measurement and control technologies (metering and smart homes) Connected transport and mobility concepts (traffic control, car sharing) IT-solutions for citizens participation and efficient administration (e-government)
Smart City Smart Grid Smart Grids - Improving Energy Infrastructure Smart grid is a digital networkthat unites electrical providers, power-delivery systems and customers, and allows two-way communicationbetween the utility and its customers Smart grids have the potential to improve the efficiency of energy distribution and usage, both through the grids design and through consumer participation Ideally, smart grids are also intended to work with multiple power sources, including wind and solar sources
Combining in a smart way power generation and consumption Eliminate waste Enhance network reliability and stability, to prevent electrical blackouts Smart Grids Balance the fluctuating power generation from renewable energies and electricity consumption The use of smart meters helps consumers to reduce consumption and provides efficiency advice Decentralization
E-Energy Smart Grids made in Germany Much more energy is produced by decentralized renewable energy sources -Energy generation and consumption have to be kept continuously in balance E-Energy: ICT-based Energy System of the Future is a new support and funding priority undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) Primary goal: create E-Energy model regions that demonstrate how the potential for optimization presented by information and communication technologies (ICT) can be exploited to achieve efficiency, supply security and environmental compatibility. The BMWifinances four model regions (40 Millions Euros). The Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) finances two model regions.
