companies & technology green building cluster Green Building Cluster of Lower Austria Business Center of Lower Austria Speaker: Dr. Alois Geißlhofer Date:
Green Building Cluster of Lower Austria We are a network gathering abt. 230 partners architects, companies active in the green building and building refurbishment sector research centres, colleges and universities, industry, green building materials suppliers (timber, bricks, insulation material, HVAC ) and green electricians, Regional administration related to buildings & energy project promoters and building & timber contractors, carpenter, joiner information and promotion organisations and other networks (wood, natural materials, renewable energy, photovoltaic...)
Topics & results Core topics: refurbishment of old buildings to low energy buildings construction of new, multi-story structures to passive house standards healthy ecological interiors, enhanced living comfort Sustainable energy technologies and energy efficiency in companies > 320 cooperation projects since 2001 (~ 800 partner companies involved) project costs of 9mio and public support of 3.3mio since , direct value added effect triggered by project activities of the GBC with 14.6mio (study economic research institute ECONOMICA 2012) Cluster-Team: 4 persons specialised in civil engineer, wood-economic, energy expert, construction and interior design, energy
Supporting innovation the GBC cluster management Support : events direct contacts to companies market research Project idea GBC helps: Development of proposals for public funding Submission of proposals for public funding Providing project planning tools Project proposal GBC makes: press releases press conferences conferences, seminars website, electronic newsletter printed publications Dissemination of Results Identification of project partners Supporting tools: GBC - newsletter GBC - contacts GBC - database Start of project GBC provides: WZN meeting rooms catering, organisation equipment Ongoing project GBC helps in writing interim reports writing final reports project management accounting for funding institutions
Team Members of Green Building Cluster of Lower Austria Martin Huber Alois Geisslhofer Clustermanager Susanne Formanek Michaela Smertnig We are specialised in civil engineer, wood-economic, energy expert, construction and interior design, qualification Our projectmanagers initiate, assist and accompany project from the idea to the publication
Specific strengths of the Green Building Cluster A critical mass of companies in the building sector on regional level from master builders to industrial building materials & systems producers, timber constructors, energy engineering companies etc. (in a distance of less than 200 km) The cluster is backed by ecoplus, the business agency of Lower Austria and belongs to the public sector, which is a driver of innovation also in the building sector (will be shown at the example of our own office building, walk the talk ) The target groups and partners of the GBC: more than 90% of our > 220 partners in the cluster are SMEs Clear targets, monitoring and reporting by a Balanced Scorecard system (BSC).
Main challenges of the cluster management Transforming the very traditional and SME dominated construction sector by promoting cooperation, research and innovation in joint projects influencing the regional administration/politics to establish favourable framework conditions for green building. focusing on combat of climate change: not only the energy performance, the whole life cycle of products and systems aiming at cradle-to-cradle : triple zero: zero energy, zero emissions, zero waste. contributing to education, skills & lifelong learning: qualification of more the 400 professionals in the field of a comprehensive building refurbishment acc. to the national climate:active standard.
Benefits companies enjoy with cluster membership e.g. Networking: Contact with cluster member companies and business associates Contact with clients (in certain target groups) Access to other regions by way of trans-regional cluster projects Knowledge of contact persons at other companies Collaboration with external consultants/experts Find more at The Economic Significance of Lower Austrian Clusters Study by Economica Institute of Economic Research, Christian Helmenstein, et.al. Vienna Nov es/cluster_noe_-_research_report_- _ e.g. Participation in cluster events and activities: Participation in cluster projects Possibility for participation in continuing training and education schemes Participation in tours of other companies Participation in sector benchmarking programs Participation in trade fairs Seminars, continuing education

GBC in national and international networks GBC is part of the national platform klima:aktiv bauen und sanieren close connections with similar institutions in the other 8 provinces and to the federal ministries GBC is member of the Austrian and EU cluster platform Members of GBC are the leading companies in the green building sector internationally (Saint Gobain ISOVER, Lisec, Wienerberger, Baumit Wopfinger, Rubner,.) Projects of the GBC have international visibility international delegations from Canada, China, Russia, USA, Finland; EU president Barroso speech at ViennaR20Conference GBC was finalist in the EU RegioStars Awards 2011 Nominee of the European Cluster Manager of the year 2012 & presentation at the 15 th TCI Conference in Spain The Austria house in Whistler/Vancouver Canada is the first passive house in Canada Foto: IG Passivhaus Österreich
Sonnenplatz Großschönau - test before you buy First Passive House Village allowing customers to test the house of choice by living in it for several days. Initiative combines technology and tourism promotion in a less developed region Ongoing joint research project of 17 companies to enhance the quality of the indoor environment in residential structures through controlled indoor ventilation: - Visitors will keep a log of their perceptions and experiences in regard to living quality - These subjective impressions will be compared with a wide array of measurable technical data - combined data will form a solid fact base which can be used by architects, builders, mechanical engineers and other professionals to design and build user-friendly ventilation systems
Building integriated Photovoltaik for the prefab house industry nominated Clusterland Award 2008 Österreichischer Fertighausverband Austrian association of prefabricated houses 2351 Wr. Neudorf 3 cooperating partners PV for the prefab house! PV is trendy but yet not standarized enough to penetrate the prefab-house marked. Idea of the cooperation was to create standards for a better implementation. Goal of the project is to reach the PV implemetation directly at the prefab industry.
Ways towards zero energy food stores REWE Austria Dienstleistungs GmbH 2355 Wr. Neudorf 4 cooperating partners nominated Clusterland Award 2008 Sustainability in the supermarket! Goal of this cooperation is to simulate the technical and economic basis for a zero energy-food store" on a prototype m² food-store-branche. Zero energy means the energy supply by active and passive elements is sufficient to cover the whole energy demand of the market for heating cooling light and airsupply.
