3 3 The future belongs to renewable energy sources SAP co-founder and WIRCON GmbH principle shareholder Dietmar Hopp on investing in renewable energy What were the reasons which made you decide to invest in renewable energy sources? Quite simple the future belongs to renewable energy sources, not fossil fuels. In the long term there is no alternative to renewable energy, neither ecological nor economic. This process has been accelerated by Germany s decision to stop using nuclear energy. For me, becoming involved in renewable energy sources, for example by getting involved with WIRSOL, was an investment in the future which immediately made ecological sense. Because, if you work with professional partners, renewable energy is the perfect vehicle for generating lucrative investments which deliver stable returns. What are the advantages which you identified over classic investments such as shares or buying an interest in a company? Since the financial crisis the general rule has been that sustainable investments are always the better business model. Investment in renewable energy sources are not subject to the same fluctuations as the stock market. Thanks to stable returns and the long service lives of the systems they thus offer a genuine alternative to traditional investment fields such as the stocks and shares markets. And what could be more sustainable than putting money into renewable energy sources which protect our environment and, over and above this, are also making us less and less dependent on fossil fuels? What role do state subsidies play for private or commercial involvement? This is an important factor for all renewable energy sources, even though they are on the decline. The German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is not designed as a permanent funding act but as legislation to kick start the industry. The increasing importance of producers who generate energy for their own consumption shows that things are moving in the right direction Green commitment is increasingly making sense even without government funding. Who is renewable energy particularly interesting for? Renewable energy is interesting both for trusts as well as also commercial and industrial companies and domestic householders. In the case of trusts, for example, investment in solar or wind power pays off because it represents a solid, ethically correct financial investment. Commercial and industrial companies can meet their own needs by installing a photovoltaic system on their roof, while domestic householders will benefit from renewable energy particularly if they choose one of the state-of-the-art energy storage solutions for any solar power they generate. This allows them to use the electricity whenever they need it, making them independent of the market price. In 1972 Dietmar Hopp, who was born in Heidelberg/Germany, founded the company Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung which became SAP AG in Hopp was Chairman of the Board until 1998, when he joined the company s Supervisory Board. In 1995 the graduate engineer set up the charitable Dietmar Hopp Stiftung foundation which has, to date, donated some 400 million euros. In late 2013 Dietmar Hopp became the principle shareholder in the newly founded WIRCON GmbH which develops and realizes photovoltaic and wind energy projects under the WIRSOL brand.

Demand for green power is increasing strongly throughout the world as previous energy suppliers such as coal and nuclear power are gradually wound down.
