3 Wind Industry in Germany Basic Facts Wind Energy has been installed in Germany since 1990 Legislation re. Grid Connection and Feed in Tariffs have played and continue to play a major role with regard to growth of Renewable Energy Generation The German Wind Energy Industry comprises: Turbine Manufacturers Component Manufacturers (Tower, Blades, Gear Boxes, Lubricants etc.) Installation and Construction Companies Grid Integration Companies Grid Integration Component Manufacturers (Generators, Transformers, Converters) Maintenance and Monitoring Services Personnel Training Consulting, Project Management and R&D Services Total # of Wind Energy related companies in Germany: ca. 3,500 Between 2003 and 2008 the Export Share of the German Wind Industry grew from 58% of total industry turn over to 87%. (2.1 to 6.9 Billion / US$ 3 to 10 Billion at $1.46 per ) The German domestic Market has declined by 25% between 2006 to 2008 in terms of installed MW. Offshore Wind is positively impacting the Ship Building and Engineering Sector

10 Availability of trained Turbine Technicians & Project Managers European Wind Developers are anticipating a shortage of trained Installers and Technicians Existing iti Training i Programs are not turning out sufficient numbers Turbine Technicians need to be able to work in high altitudes and under volatile weather conditions An initiative in the EU is working on streamlined, EU wide qualification levels and standards Project Management of Offshore Installations is key to stay within budget and on time In Europe the number of available project managers is limited

11 Offshore Wind Creating Opportunities for the Ship Building Industry Europe is already experiencing a shortage of suitable vessels for offshore wind Current vessel capacity does not allow for quick development of planned offshore projects and adds significant cost There is no one fits all vessel for offshore installations, making design and engineering decisions difficult

13 Other Factors impacting the Wind Energy Industry: Take aways from GADORE Conference in Rostock, Germany Financing: the world financial crisis has especially impacted offshore wind projects. Investors are right now focusing on proven technology (= onshore and shallow water offshore installations) Electricity Price: European markets with fixed feed in tariffs (i.e. Germany, Denmark, Sweden) have seen stronger growth in wind energy compared to marketswith variable pricing models. Fixed pricing is more attractive for Investors. Grid Connection: countries with legally confirmed grid connection have stronger growth of renewable energy sources, including wind energy. European companies view the grid situation i in the US as major obstacle for investment Documentation Standards: there are currently no international documentation standards related to wind industry installations, including offshore.
