Intro Sustainability at UCSB has evolved tremendously over the years. With a history of conservation and preservation ingrained in the ethic of university and community, our commitment to sustainability dates back to the 1970s with the advent of the environmental studies department and early energy and water conservation practices. Today, UCSB has expanded its focus to include areas like academics, research, food, procurement and comprehensive campus planning. Whether you are part of the UCSB community or not, view this document as a snapshot of the current year s practice, as part of an evolution over the years, and as part of the commitment of the university and all its contributors to advancing solutions to some of the most pressing problems of our time.

Campus Sustainability Plan The Campus Sustainability Plan, developed since 2005, provides a framework for a sustainable future at UCSB. Aspects of the plan will be integrated into the Long Range Development Plan. The Plan consists of 9 functional groups: Academics and Research, Built Environment, Energy, Food, Landscape, Procurement, Transportation, Waste, and Water. Each group has come up with short, intermediate, and long term goals to support sustainability in their field. The Plan and Executive Summary are pending approval from the Campus Planning Committee. The Plan has created two new positions in sustainability: an Associate Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services (with 30% time dedicated to sustainability), and a TGIF/Sustainability Coordinator.

Campus Sustainability Plan This report details the progress being made on the goals of Campus Sustainability Plan and highlights the achievements of all the people working to make this campus greener! View the latest update of the Plan, sustainability indicators and background information at

Sustainability Events First Western Forum on Energy & Water Sustainability: UCSB had the good fortune to host a special conference put on by Professor Arturo Keller of the Bren School. The conference featured speakers detailing the nexus between energy and water. Invariably, moving and cleaning water requires energy, and energy production requires water. The conference encouraged collaborative planning for each resource due to their inextricable connection.

Sustainability Events SCUP Telecast: UCSB was host to a telecast by the Society for College and University Planning entitled Where Is Your Campus On the Continuum of Integrated Sustainability Planning? More than 20 students, staff, and faculty attended the two hour presentation, which featured the efforts of four diverse colleges: Grand Valley College, Arizona State, Harvard, and Pima Community College.

Earth Day Campus Sustainability Sustainability Events UCSB participated in the Santa Barbara Earth Day festival by organizing a green car show and providing a booth on student sustainability activities and sustainable building and operations of campus.

Academics & Research UCSB Reads for Earth Day in Sponsored by the UCSB Library, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and the Santa Barbara Public Library, UCSB Reads for Earth Day was an event that sought to engage the community on the issue of global warming. The libraries distributed over 3,000 copies of Elizabeth Kolbert s Field Notes from a Catastrophe and countless others read either a purchased or recycled copy. Kolbert also spoke along with Dr. James Hansen of NASA and Dr. Stephen Koonin, chief scientist for British Petroleum, and others as part of the "Global Warming - Arts and Society". See for more information.

Academics & Research Several individual academic departments have been making strides towards sustainability in their respective buildings: The Library s SANE group (Sustainable Action Needed Everywhere) has improved recycling and energy efficiency in their building. They also hosted a UCSB Reads event, providing organic and local refreshments. The Bren School Sustainability Committee has been educating building occupants about the benefits of recycling and began selling reusable, environmentally friendly gear for Bren students. The Ellison Hall Sustainability Committee has also been educating building occupants on the responsible use of resources. They are creating a model for low-waste building operations, by providing facilities for many different types of recycling and composting. They received a grant from The Green Initiative Fund to help achieve this bold goal.

Academics & Research Laboratory Research and Technical Staff (LabRATS) is a unique group of staff and student interns that reduces waste, advances energy efficiency, and promotes sustainability in laboratories. This year, the group assessed 17 labs increasing efficient research practices, saving up to 200 kwh per day, up to 50,000 liters of water per year, and exchanging $10-20,000 in equipment and analytical services. They co-hosted a management workshop with the Office of Research and presented their work at UC Berkeley, UC Davis and three conferences. LabRATS efforts broadened to building use and campus-wide programs such as fume hoods, mercury elimination, surplus chemical exchange, freezer recycling and rebates, surplus equipment exchange and sales, and a Bulb Free campaign.

Academics & Research UCSB new Strategic Academic Plan features environment and sustainability as interdisciplinary themes engaging multiple departments and countless relevant social concerns. See the plan at: The avenues by which people learn of how to minimize their impact on the environment are growing rapidly. The EcoFacts list numbers 350, with local news services spreading the message through their websites. You can sign up to receive a weekly EcoFacts at sustainability.ucsb.edu.

Academics & Research Along with the mention of the environment in the long term academic plan, UCSB is advancing sustainability in education in other ways: Professors in Environmental Studies and Writing used class projects to address sustainability issues, including marketing campus sustainability groups and performing analyses on proposed environmental projects. The Academic Senate created a working group on Sustainability. UCSB Hosted a workshop on infusing sustainability into curriculum. Faculty members from 10 different departments received advice from one of the top experts in the country on this topic. For more information, see

Built Environment LEED for New Construction UCSB has a green building policy which states that all buildings programmed after July 2004 must meet LEED Silver status and surpass Title 24 by 20%. The campus is seeing the fruits of that effort as two new LEED NC certified projects were completed this year: Marine Science Research Building (Certified) Student Resource Building (pending Gold)

Energy Thanks to the hard work of Energy Team, UCSB s utility consumption has gone down over the past decade despite a rapid increase in building space. The following slides give an idea of the effect of new buildings and the impact of conservation efforts.

Energy NET STATE ELECTRICAL USAGE AT FISCAL CLOSE 85,000,000 83,189,293 kwh 80,000,000 75,000,000 70,000,000 65,000,000 60,000,000 55,000,000 50,000,000 69,217, FY ENDING 17% Reduction UCSB increased its total electricity usage as new buildings were constructed, however consumption is still 17% below our 1998 maximum.

Energy 30 ELECTRICAL INTENSITY % Reduction kwh/sq ft/yr Fiscal Year Electrical intensity decreased slightly despite energy intensive buildings coming online. This is the perhaps best metric of the performance of our buildings.

Energy STATE BUILDING ELECTRICITY USAGE AND IMPACT OF NEW BUILDINGS 85,000,000 80,000,000 Comp Rm Cooling Reccen Exp Annual kwh 75,000,000 70,000,000 65,000,000 83,189,293 ICA CNSI Life Science ESB State Usage 32% Reduction, excluding new buildings 60,000,000 55,000,000 62,942,909 56,751,000 57,954,162 50,000, FY

Energy NATURAL GAS INTENSITY % Reduction Therms/sq ft/ yr Fiscal Year Despite high gas intensity in new lab buildings, conservation efforts resulted in only a small increase in total gas intensity this year and a big reduction from our peak.

Energy Energy use reductions were possible thanks to the conservation initiatives implemented by the Energy Team, such as: Lamp upgrades to more efficient T8 lamps with electronic ballasts Low pressure drop filters in air handlers Restroom motion sensors and LED traffic signals Variable frequency drives and variable air volume systems on HVAC and lab ventilation systems in energy intensive buildings Monitoring based commissioning in Broida, Engineering Sciences, MSRB, Engineering II, and Life Sciences Bi-level dimming fixtures in 150 stairwells

Energy Energy Team conservation initiatives resulted in the following greenhouse gas emission reductions and dollar savings: Reduction of CO2 emissions by 10,800,000 lbs. That s like taking 1,100 cars off the road! Almost $1.4 million saved per year between from 2002 to 2006 projects Monitoring-based commissioning saved $417,887 in energy use $700,000 in grants and rebates allowed for a savings of 2.5 million kwh of electricity and 92,000 therms of natural gas See the following slide for more information about the MSRB commissioning project

Energy Spotlight: MSRB Commissioning Commissioning at MSRB sought to reduce energy use by examining building operations and fixing and improving damaged or inefficient systems. Long air ducts required high static pressure, which required very high fan power. The team removed unnecessary dampers and attenuators, and upgraded to low pressure drop filters. This meant that less fan power was required for the same pressure. The building was highly overventilated. Overventilation requires more power for fans, as well as increasing the amount of outside air needed to heat or cool to indoor conditions. The team found this stemmed from damaged sensor plugs in variable air volume boxes. After repairing these, they could recalibrate air flow monitors and reduce flow at night.

Energy Spotlight: Before: MSRB Commissioning Before: After: Before: After: Electricity usage in kwh/sq ft Chilled water in ton-hrs/sq ft: Natural gas in therms per sq ft

Energy Housing and Residential Services has moved forward with aggressive energy conservation programs designed to reduce cost and environmental impact, despite a quickly increasing student population. Highlights include: The installation of Energy Star appliances for all energy intensive applications like refrigerators, computers, and monitors. Installation of solar hot water heating on two department pools Installing low wattage CFL s in 540 apartments High efficiency, low emission boilers at San Miguel Housing also continues to operate a 5 kw solar PV array on top of Carrillo and solar hot water heating at many residence halls

Energy Green Campus at UCSB: Green Campus is run by the Alliance to Save Energy under the auspices of California Public Utilities Commission. Green Campus provides paid internships for students that seek to conserve energy through community education, purchasing, and energysaving projects. For a third year, Green Campus organized the Resident Hall Energy Conservation Competition, which reduced energy use in all on-campus dorms and at Francisco Torres. Green Campus interns exchanged over 800 CFLs at Earth Day and other events in Isla Vista. Bulbs were provided by SoCal Edison. Interns also worked on LEED Existing Building documentation and helped with the LARS program.

Renewable Energy UCSB has also begun making strategic investments in both on-site and off-site renewable energy generation: Solar PV: UCSB currently has 60 kw of photovoltaic capacity. Student Affairs will be installing a kw system on the roof of Rec Cen II in Wind: A prototype wind turbine donated to UCSB will be placed near the Bren School. The technology allows for more efficient small-scale wind energy applications and is even effective in fairly low-wind areas. Off-site renewables: UCSB occasionally purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) for certain events and new buildings. This year, REC s contributed 2.3 million kwh of electricity. Also, UCSB s electricity provider, Southern California Edison, provided 16-17% of its energy from certified renewable sources.

Climate Change Although purchasing and using renewable energy is a great path for UCSB to follow, we still get more bang for our buck from improvements in energy efficiency. Emission reductions from energy efficiency projects are being tracked through the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR). UCSB started tracking emissions in 2006 and continues reporting to the registry on an annual basis. As part of our goals to be a Climate Leader for the UC community, a plan for UCSB to be Carbon Neutral (zero emissions from any campus operation) is currently being developed.

Food Housing Housing and Residential Services Dining has made vast improvements on including organic and local choices in their supplier contracts. With the inclusion of organic and local farms in food supply contracts, 11% of the produce Housing serves is now certified organic or local/sustainable. This is up from 2% just last year! Organic options are now available at all dining commons. In addition to organic food, Dining Services has significantly reduced its waste stream by recycling all used vegetable oil into biodiesel and composting all vegetable scraps. Most conventional commercial kitchen equipment has been phased out for energy efficient models.

Food UCEN The UCen continues to increase their selection of sustainable food and beverage and have lowered the environmental impact of their entire operation. 66% of coffee purchases were Fair Trade, Organic, or Fair Trade Organic coffees for the fiscal year. 5% of fresh produce purchases were organic and 98% of those produce purchases were grown in Santa Barbara County. 12% of chemical purchases were green. There are no green alternatives for the remaining 88% of chemicals (includes ware washing soaps, sanitizers, and hand soap) as of yet. The UCen recycled 174 tons of waste this year through the commingled trash program. This is 50% of all trash collected. Another 8% of waste was composted.

Landscape & Biotic Environment The Cheadle Center for Biological and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) has expanded efforts aimed at restoring and preserving native species in a sustainable manner. A great deal of effort has gone into the mitigation of the San Clemente Housing Project. CCBER staff have designed and created a stormwater management system, preserved and enhanced a vernal wetland, and restored native oak woodland and coast sage scrub ecosystems. CCBER has also continued efforts to educate the community of the unique flora and fauna on campus. They are working on web-based catalog of the over 1,000 species present on campus. A wonderful walking tour brochure is available online.

Landscape & Biotic Environment CCBER provided educational programs to over 250 elementary school students on wetlands and their importance to sustainability, and worked with or educated over 322 undergraduate students in through internships, volunteer work, and lectures. Visit ccber.lifesci.ucsb.edu for more information on how to get involved, donate or visit. UCSB recently dedicated 85 more acres to conservation and restoration, bringing the campus total to 226 out of 800 acres placing more than 25% of campus land into that category. This land will remain permeable to rainfall and support native vegetation, acting to mitigate the effects of other development on campus.

Procurement at UCSB Central Stores has expanded its selection of green products faster than you can say environmentally preferable purchasing The Storehouse now sells a majority of its paper with recycled content (54% of reams). Of all paper products, 64% contained recycled material. The Storehouse also now stocks 50% postconsumer waste paper for minimal added cost. Janitorial products continue to move towards 100% postconsumer waste recycled content and 100% Greenseal cleaning chemicals. The Storehouse is producing a catalog that will feature all green products, greatly increasing awareness and sales. Central Stores has rapidly expanded e-waste recycling through a California-certified e-waste recycler, and anticipates increasing e- waste recycling by 20% in 2007 to around 150,000 pounds.

Procurement: UC-wide UC passed one of the most comprehensive environmentally preferable purchasing policies of any university in the country. UCSB students and staff played a leading role in developing this policy. UC has asked all suppliers to tell the University how they will help meet the policy's requirements. UC teamed with several other leading research universities to get the U.S. EPA to begin development of an Energy Star rating for laboratorygrade refrigerators and freezers. Sustainability requirements have been integrated into all systemwide Requests for Proposals and are now used to evaluate potential suppliers. UC signed a systemwide carpet contract with Interface Flooring and Bentley Prince Street. These are two of the most aggressive American companies that promote sustainable operations. The carpet s entire lifecycle approaches zero waste and many types of carpet are certified climate neutral.

Transportation Transportation Alternatives Program attracted over 500 UCSB Faculty and Staff to use the complimentary bus pass program at least once per month. Nearly 200 Faculty Staff participants used the bus at least half time. UCSB CarShare provides over 200 trips per month to our alternative transportation commuters who would otherwise lack mobility off campus TAP membership among Faculty and Staff grew almost 20% with the addition of complimentary access to the MTD bus and UCSB CarShare.

Transportation UCSB vanpool has increased the number of vans by 20%. Future vanpool fare increases will be capped to UCSB's average salary increases rather than fuel increases. UCSB s 11 vanpools reduce vehicle miles traveled by campus commuters by 3.2 million miles per year, keeping over 2.2 million pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere. A grant for $52,000 from Caltrans Bicycle Transportation Account was awarded to purchase new bike racks for campus. Associated Students B.I.K.E.S purchased 20 additional bike locker spaces which doubled our secure bike parking capacity.

Transportation Alternative Fuel vehicles purchases: 2 NEVs, 5 diesel trucks running on B20, 2 E85 flex fuel trucks, 2 hybrids UCSB was recognized as a leader in reducing the nations dependence on imported oil through its commitment to advanced transportation technologies and participation in the Clean Cities program Transportation Services created a new purchasing policy that requires 75% of newly purchased vehicles to use alternative fueled or be highly efficient (>30 mpg and SULEV or better rating)

Waste For the second year in a row, UCSB s total waste diversion has topped 50%! UCSB recycled 3452 tons of waste for a total of 53.25%. A little effort goes a long way: As part of the LEED EB program, staff at the Recreation Center revamped their recycling program to meet their unique needs. They raised recycling rates from about 15% to over 60%. AS Recycling has placed technotrash, or electronic waste, bins in several buildings on campus. The bins will rotate quarterly, so check out for current locations.

Water UCSB continues to install waterless urinals and high efficiency water fixtures in new buildings. Facilities Management also received a grant to install 10 more waterless urinals in Campbell Hall and North Hall, along with water meters to help track savings. New lab buildings use high volumes of water, so total water consumption increased this year. Because of new green building practices, continuing to upgrade aging plumbing fixtures with water efficient versions, and expanding reclaimed water lines, we anticipate potable water consumption to fall in the coming years UCSB MAIN CAMPUS YEARLY POTABLE WATER USE VS. GOLETA WATER DISTRICT CAP (Acre Feet) Permit #14 Cap New Maximum Potable Level Before GWD Mitigation Fees Imposed Potable AF/Y GWD Cap Fiscal Year Ending

Water Using reclaimed water for irrigation is both cost-effective and environmentally-friendly. Housing and Residential Services has expanded use of reclaimed at on-campus dorms % of the main campus irrigation is provided by reclaimed water The following graph shows total reclaimed water consumption versus minimum and maximum values per Goleta Water District. With recent expansion of reclaimed lines, UCSB will probably not fall under minimum consumption level Reclaimed Water Usage vs. Min/Max Levels UCSB Main Campus Maximum (depending on availability) 280 AF/Y Acre-feet/yr Reclaimed AF/Y Minimum 140 AF/Y GWD may terminate reclaimed water service if UCSB's reclaimed usage drops below minimum level for 3 consecutive years Fiscal Year Ending

Monitoring & Tracking Progress The Sustainability Team has continued to track progress on a number of indicators to show progress on goals of the Campus Sustainability Plan. For the latest update of indicators, visit In an effort to improve tracking and data analysis, Facilities Management worked with several Bren School students on a group project to study the spatial distribution of environmental indicators on campus and to study the most effective way to track these indicators. Their report can be found at:

TGIF The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) was created by students in the spring of 2006 with a charge to reduce the University's impact on the environment. Students voted with an overwhelming majority to increase their own fees by $2.60 per quarter, contributing approximately $182,000 a year towards TGIF. Any student, staff, or faculty member of the University community can submit a project proposal to the TGIF grants making committee. The committee is comprised of three undergraduates, two graduates, one staff, and one faculty member. During the funding cycle 18 projects applied, requesting a total of $490,000. Of those projects, 10 were awarded funds, totaling $150,000.

TGIF The following is a sampling of the projects funded: Zero Waste, One Step Ahead of the Game ($24,731): Implement a comprehensive waste management program in Ellison hall that will achieve 75% waste diversion by 2008 and zero waste by Energy Conservation Projects ($24,145): A suite of energy efficiency projects designed to reduce the campus utility usage and greenhouse gas impact. Waterless Urinal Installation ($10,242): Remove and recycle a total of 9 high consumption urinals and replace them with Waterless urinals in Campbell Hall and North Hall. Children of the Corn ($10,884): Educate campus undergraduates about how much of their diet is based on corn from the Midwest, and the source of their tap and bottled water.

Conclusion The green campus movement has advanced in leaps in bounds this year, thanks to the involvement and dedication of students, staff, and faculty at UCSB. Keep up the great work!
