It is an immense pleasure for us to welcome you to the 7th International Forum on Green Technology and Management (IFGTM 2017) which is held in Hanoi capital of Vietnam. The International Forum on Green Technology and Management (IFGTM) is an annual event organized by the Consortium for Green Technology Management and Research (CGTMR). Participating in the Consortium, there are 16 members coming from top universities in Vietnam and overseas. There have been so far six IFGTMs held in Da Nang (2011) in Ho Chi Minh City (2012), in Hanoi (2013), in Can Tho (2014), in Hue (2015) and in Binh Duong (2016). This year, the 7 th International Forum on Green Technology and Management (IFGTM 2017) is hosted by Institute of Environmental Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (IET-VAST) from 25 th to 26 th October With the theme New Approaches and Solutions in Environmental Protection Towards Sustainable Development, the 7 th IFGTM is a positive and effective forum for researchers and managers to exchange ideas, share approaches and empirical experiences in environmental protection. The conference topics mainly focus on the aspect Green technology and management which has been considered as driving force for sustainable development in the period of industrialization, modernization and international integration. The 7 th international conference is expanded to facilitate universities, research institutes, offices of science, departments, magazines, publishers and scientists both in the country and overseas to participate. Also, this is a good opportunity for scholars to publish their research findings in a Special Issue of Journal of Science and Technology of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. With the agreement of the Consortium for Green Technology Management and Research, IFGTM 2017 continues to cover a broad range of many topics relate to environmental engineering and management. With the theme New Approaches and Solutions in Environmental Protection Towards Sustainable Development, research areas of particular interest for the IFGTM 2017 include: o o o o o o o Solid and hazardous waste management; Wastewater and water treatment; Air pollution control; Climate change; Monitoring, analysis and modelling in environment engineering; Reduce - Reuse - Recycle; Biodiversity and agricultural environment; o Environment of coastal area. 10 Keynote Lecture #3 SOME PHYTOREMEDIATION APPLICATIONS FOR WASTEWATER AND HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATED SOILS IN VIETNAM Kim 1 D.D., B.T.K. Anh 2, T. V. Tua 3, N.T. H. Ha 4 1, 2, 3 IET, VAST; 4 VNU University of Science ABSTRACT Phytoremediation is the name of a set of technologies that use plants to degrade, extract, or contain contaminants from soil and water. Toxic heavy metals, organic pollutants and some inorganic elements are the major targets for phytoremediation. It appears that phytoremediation could be the good technology for pollution treatment due to its cost-effective and eco-friendly nature. - To promote the phytoremediaton application for heavy metal-contaminated soils in Vietnam, there have been several research programs conducted during the last decade. The studies identified two arsenic (As) hyperaccumulators, Pteris vittataand Pityrogramma calomelanos, and four grasses suitable for treatment of lead (Pb)- and zinc (Zn)-contaminated soils, Eleusine indica, Cyperus rotundus, Cynodon dactylon, and Equisetum ramosissimum, of which E. indica was found as Pb hyperaccumulator. All of these species are indigenous and naturally adapted to heavy metal contaminated habitats. - Under field experimental conditions, the combination of P. vittata, P. calomelanos, and V. zizanioides (Ha Thuong Sn-Ti mining area) or P. vittata, E. indica and V. zizanioides (Tan Long Pb-Zn mining area) is very effective in treatment of soils contaminated with moderate concentration of As and Pb in short time. The combined utilization of P. vittata, V. zizanioides, and E. indica at Tan Long mining area, and P. vittata, P. calomelanos, and V. zizanioides at Ha Thuong mine site together with application of mycorrhiza fungi, EDTA, phosphorous, and organic fertilizers, showed very promising results. Concentrations of As, Pb, and Zn were significantly reduced over 3-year period. It can be concluded that the mixed cultivation of the selected plants can be used to remediate As-, Pb-, and Zn-contaminated soils. - It appears that the degree of success in terms of contaminant removal efficiency by CW systems varies depending upon the plant species selected, availability of microbial community, climatic conditions, physico-chemical properties of soil, and CW configuration. It is well-established that nutrients (N and P), heavy metals, and COD can be successfully removed to a great extent by CW systems. An Ecotechnology Model using aquatic plants (Phragmites australis, Vetiveria zizanioides, Cyperus alternifolius, and Eichhornia crassipes) was established in Hoa Binh province for treating piggery wastewater. This model is applied as a complimentary solution to treat the wastewater from piggery farm after microbiological treatment process. Surface flow technology, and subsurface flow technology combined with the floating plants were successfully applied. This Ecotechnology is suitable to Vietnam conditions and can be enlarged for livestock wastewater treatment after microbiological treatment. Subsurface flow and free-water surface constructed wetland with more than 43,000 m 2 has being applied in Ha Tinh province as a final step for treating wastewater of Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation. It is noted that in this Phytotechnology, the indigenous well - known plants Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, and Cyperus tegetiformis are used. The operating CW indicates a good and stable feasibility of the phytoremediation application.

11 Keynote Lecture #4 RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF CAN THO UNIVERSITY IN THE FIEL OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN THE MEKONG RIVER DELTA Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Cong College of Environment and Natural Resources Can Tho University (CTU) ABSTRACT Mekong Delta locates at downstream of Mekong River. Although total area of the Delta is approximately 12% of the area of Vietnam, it was seen to contribute for about 50% production of rice and more than 70% production of aquaculture of the whole Vietnam over centuries. Mekong Delta was also predicted as one of the deltas that will be seriously affected by climate change and sea level rise. Therefore, Mekong Delta has been considered as one of the important areas of Vietnam. Can Tho University is the oldest and multi-disciplinary university, locates at the central of the Mekong Delta. It has much contribution for the development of the Delta. In this presentation, research activities of Can Tho University in the field of environmental protection will be shared, including solutions for environmental protection in aquaculture, agriculture and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise.

12 Keynote Lecture #5 LONG TERM OPERATION OF A PILOT SCALE WATER TREATMENT PLANT USING TRICKLING FILTER COUPLED WITH OZONATION FOR MITIGATION OF POTENTIAL THMs FORMATION FROM SAIGON RIVER WATER Le Ngoc Kim Ngan (1), Phan Bien Vinh Tan (2), Ho Le Phuoc Loc (1), Le Quang Do Thanh (1), Nguyen Minh Tri (1), Tran Kim Thach (2), Nguyen Nhat Huy (1), and Nguyen Phuoc Dan (1) (1) Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology VNU HCM (2) Saigon Water Supply Company (SAWACO) ABSTRACT A pilot scale trickling filter and ozonation contactor with capacity of 20 m 3 d -1 was run at Hoa Phu Pump Station which takes raw water from Saigon River for drinking water supply for Ho Chi Minh City. The raw water contains 0.52 ± 0.19 mgnh 4+ -N l -1, 0.14 ± 0.06 mg l -1 total iron and 3.14 ± 0.45 mg DOC l -1. The study aimed to using the pilot scale experiment to assess ammonia, iron and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removals from Saigon Water River for the sake of reducing chlorine demand and thus mitigating risk from disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation. The size of the trickling filter was 0.5 m length 0.5 width 2m height. The bio-media was seven PE wool sheets with thickness of 30 mm that is widely used as filter cloth in aquariums. It run at hydraulic loading of 3 m 3 m -2.h -1 of raw water, and 8 m 3 m -2.h -1, where 50% of total flow was the returned effluent of ozonation. The pilot scale ozonation contactor which has the size of 0.6 m long x 0.6 m wide x 2.0 m high was operated at contact time of 15 minutes and ozone concentration of 0.5 mg l -1. The ammonia, iron and DOC removals at 8 m 3 m -2.h -1 were 58%, 25% and 22%, respectively. Whereas, it obtained ammonia, iron and DOC removals of 52%, 19% and 9% DOC respectively. Thus, even though the experiment with returned ozonation effluent run at high hydraulic loading rate (4 m 3 m -2.h - 1 of raw water), the better performance was obtained as comparison to the experiment without return (3 m 3 m -2.h -1 of raw water). Formation potential of THMs (THMFPs) reduced from μg l -1 to μg l -1, equivalent to THMFP reduction of 60%. Thus, the experiment shown that minimization of THMFPs had positive correlation to removal of ammonia, iron and DOC using trickling filter coupled with ozonation. In practice, total THM concentration that is formed after chlorination in the water treatment is much lower than THMFP which is THM concentration formed at the contact time of 7 days and under excess chlorine concentration.

The study was conducted by collecting, classifying and measuring domestic solid waste from 62 households in 7 consecutive days. A structure questionnaire was also used in the interviews with survey households to collect data on their demographic characteristics. The results show that the household solid waste was generated evenly on a daily basis with an amount of 286±171g/person/day during the weekdays. The composition of household domestic solid waste was divided into 17 different groups; of which, the two groups representing the largest amount were food waste (56.35%) and garden waste (10.89%). Hazardous waste accounted for a very small proportion (only 0.26%). The detailed composition ratio of food, garden waste, nylon, paper, plastic, porcelain, etc. and mixed stuff were defined at 56.35%, 10.89%, 8.93%, 3.22%, 3.22%, 3.02%, etc. and 10,23%, respectively.
