ENERGY MANAGEMENT THROUGH BUILDING RETROFITTING: PROSPECTS FOR KSA Dr. M. Asif King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, KSA
PRESENTATION OUTLINES 2 Retrofitting for a sustainable built environment International trends and best practices Retrofitting in Saudi building sector key drivers and challenges Technology and human role in retrofitting Concluding Remarks
WORLD CAPITALS AT NIGHT
GLOBAL BUILDIG ENERGY MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE 4 Globally the building sector consumes around 40% of the resources, uses one third of the primary energy, and emits over one third of GHGs The energy used by the building sector continues to increase faster compared to others primarily because new buildings are constructed faster than old ones are retired. Compared to other sectors i.e. transportation and industry, buildings have the greatest potential to reduce energy consumption and environmental emissions. Energy consumption in buildings can be reduced by 30 to 80% using proven and commercially available technologies.
FACTORS DRIVING BUILDING ENERGY CONSUMPTION External factor Weather/climate Size Design Materials Ventilation Location Orientation Building Construction /Envelope Building Services Fuels Systems Appliances Operating regime Human Factor Comfort requirements Occupancy regimes Management and maintenance Activities
WHERE IS THE IMPROVEMENT SCOPE? 6 New Builds Retrofits Easier Challenging Economical Expensive Durable Fragile and sometimes Not workable! A small fraction of the building stock! Backbone of building stock

ENERGY AND BUILDINGS IN KSA 12 Annual growth in electricity consumption over the last two decades is reported to be 8%. By 2040, the electricity consumption is set to increase from the current figure of around 290 TWh/Year to as much as 850 TWh/Year. Installed power generation capacity to reach up to 185,000MW, requiring an annual addition of over 4,000 MW. Buildings accounts for almost 80% of the total electricity consumption and the residential buildings alone use 51% of the total electricity produced in the Kingdom. While around two-third of the population is under the age of 30 years, as of 2012 estimates, growing population demands over 200,000 news homes per year over next decade.
GROWTH IN ENERGY DEMAND IN KSA 300,000,000 Energy Consumption (MWh) 250,000, ,000, ,000, ,000,000 50,000, Residential Energy Total Energy
ENERGY MANAGEMENT DRIVERS IN KSA 14 Rapid growth in energy demand Escalating peak demand Diversity in supplies Environmental pressures Vision 2030 goals
KEY CHALLENGES 15 Lack of regulations Largely unregulated market Lack of Data Reliability of available details Subsidized tariffs Lack of awareness Fear of impact on lifestyle Lack of expertise and skillset

CONCLUDING REMARKS 20 Improving the energy performance of existing building stock through retrofitting is imperative to the sustainability of the building sector Robust policy framework is needed understanding the needs, opportunities and avenues of working for a common goal Effective policy implementation is imperative to achieve desired targets Effective O&M is as important as use of energy efficient and renewable technologies Enhanced technology-human partnership thermostat adjustment is as important as having sophisticated thermostats Mitigation to be coupled with adaptation technology alone can not solve problems, whatever the country and society
