4 WAFPOW17 Post Event Report: Thank you for attending WAFPOW17 So, what did we learn from the 3 days spent at the West Africa Power Summit 2017? ECOWAS developed the White Paper for Regional Policy (LBR) in 2005, adopted by the Heads of State and Government on 12th January Its objective is to enable at least half of the population to have access to modern energy services by To this end, three (3) specific objectives have been identified: * Strengthening regional integration, through the pooling of good practices, exchanges of experience, a regional information system and the development of transnational cooperation; * Promoting harmonized policy and institutional frameworks (i.e. PRSP, MDG monitoring framework, etc.), integrating access to energy services into national priorities to ensure human development; Vale Media Group * Develop coherent energy programs geared to poverty reduction in rural and peri-urban areas. This is the reason that Vale Media again brought industry heads together from the service and power companies to discuss and share ideas/experiences on how the industry can collaborate and share knowledge for improving the energy situation and achieving the ambitious energy goals of the ECOWAS region in a foreseeable future ENERGY POLICIES AND MODELS The need for coherent and comprehensible regulatory framework that would be applicable throughout the sub region has been highlighted during the summit. It becomes clear that substantial efforts have to be made in that direction and the participants from the institutional sphere have taken note. Vale Media will be looking into setting out a platform where meaningful exchanges and discussions can be carried out to address this issue. It is paramount if the energy objectives have to be met. ABB OCTP Award / STACE Best Technology Award ENERGY SECURITY The intermittent character of renewable energy particularly solar and wind can be a challenge, bearing in mind the high costs of storage and a lack of extensive grid to enable the distribution of the production constitute a real challenge for the sub region. That is why one of the avenues that have been explored to guaranty energy security is pushing for a interconnected grid. The WAPOL has laid out their strategy in that regard and it needs to be supported and encouraged by all stakeholders. Which was largely emphasized during the summit in Dakar ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY It came across abundantly clear that the ECOWAS countries have expressed their commitment to promote an energy transition by according a steadily greater share to sustainable energy solutions such as renewables. This is consistent with the tremendous amount of resources that this region can tap in as well their suitability when it comes to securing energy access to remote areas far from the grid. VMG, ANED, ANER, TCN
5 WAFPOW17 Post Event Report: Thank you for attending WAFPOW17 ENERGY MIX One energy source alone can no longer be an option, especially for countries in the ECOWAS region. Whether one takes Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast or Nigeria, a clear strategy is being implemented and it consists of integrating more and more renewables in the energy mix. Thus, these countries ensure that they will gradually reduce their dependence on oil with its corollary in terms of volatility, and climate hazards. The summit provided an excellent venue to learn more about the efforts that have been deployed by the different states as well as the sub regional body such as ECOWAS, WAPOL and OMVG ENERGY USE EDUCATION Implementation of power projects ultimately must benefit the end user, which is mostly domestic users. Is enough done to educate users in the safe and responsible use of electricity, as well as when and how to use electricity? Business Meeting GE & LEC Opening Keynote Panel with ENGIE, ABB, GridCo MOE Ghana WAFPOW17 Best Presentation
