EXPERTISE Architecture Engineering Environmental Planning WORK Agriculture Civic and Culture Commercial Education Energy Government Healthcare Housing Industrial Mining Public Works Sports + Recreation Protecting Our Citizens, Resources, and Environment True expertise coupled with unparalleled service means marked improvements in a community s access to clean, safe and affordable resources. ISG has a rich history of building trusting relationships with public and private clients and stakeholders. Together, we work to deliver high quality drinking water, surface water, stormwater and wastewater technologies and solutions for our clients and communities. Our in-depth knowledge and understanding of regulations, environmental conditions, procedures and processes enables our team of expert engineers to confidently plan, design and address client s individual needs with innovative, budget-appropriate systems and services that maximize operations and provide long-term value. ISG provides high level architecture, engineering, environmental and planning services for a wide range of markets. Our commitment to satisfy each project s unique demands is relentless and unwavering from start to finish.
WATER Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential to the well-being and prosperity of all communities. Residents and businesses rely on their public leaders, administration and staff to provide this most basic, yet complicated, lifeline. ISG has planned, designed and developed sustainable and cost-effective water supply, treatment, pumping and distribution systems through the Upper Midwest. Through our expertise, collaborative nature and results-driven solutions, communities of all sizes and shape from small systems to large systems are experiencing the benefits, value and integrity of our water systems. Water Experience Master Planning and Facility Plans Water Storage Facilities Water Distribution Systems Water Treatment Plants Wells and Pumping Stations Water Operations Valve Exercising Pipeline Rehabilitation/Replacement Hydraulic System Modeling and Analysis Fire Flow Modeling LAWTON WATER TREATMENT PLANT Lawton, IA High iron and manganese levels in the water of the City of Lawton caused red/black water that was not able to be sequestered using polyphosphates. An iron and manganese removal water treatment plant was designed using a unitized aeration-detention-filtration treatment system. The tank was constructed of stainless steel to avoid future corrosion. The treatment building was designed using a concrete filled insulated plastic forming system that stays in place providing a maintenance free building both inside and out. The system has been producing good quality water from Dakota Aquifer wells since GOODHUE WATER TOWER Goodhue, MN A study was conducted for a new water distribution system to serve the City of Goodhue. This study included creating a model of the city s existing water system that was used to determine the effects of a new water tower and water main improvements. When complete, the project included a 250,000-gallon water tower, a water main extension to existing infrastructure, site plans and demolition of the existing tower.
FAIRMONT WATER TREATMENT PLANT Fairmont, MN High iron and manganese levels in the water of the City of Lawton The City of Fairmont had utilized Budd Lake as a raw water source since 1897 when the first pumping facility for raw water withdrawal was installed. The latest water treatment plant was constructed nearly 80 years ago. When the city constructed a new water treatment plant on an adjacent site, ISG teamed with AE2S on the design and provided architectural, site design and land surveying services. The project incorporated energy saving solar tube lighting and rain gardens that reduce storm water runoff. It has been an uncompromising success, both in terms of operations and water quality. LOHRVILLE WATER TREATMENT Lohrville, IA ISG s evaluation of Lohrville s treatment system resulted in a recommendation to convert the current softening process to an ion exchange system, allowing for a reduction in operator attention and eliminating the presence of dust throughout the plant. The process continues to utilize all of the existing filter system and piping, with only the addition of a new ion exchange water softening system, and chemical feed pumps. Three pressure ion exchange vessels were added and the entire inside of the plant was sand blasted and painted. The antiquated elevated water tower was replaced with a modernized tower. WEST BEND WATER TREATMENT IMPROVEMENTS West Bend, IA After years of multiple repairs to their iron filter, heavy corrosion finally caused the replacement of the unit for the City of West Bend, Iowa. ISG prepared plans for a new factory built unitized aeration/detention/ filtration unit. This was the first all aluminum filtration unit constructed in the State of Iowa. The tank resists corrosion and provides maintenance free service. In addition, a large portion of the piping was replaced with PVC piping, which will also provide a more maintenance free system. The treatment plant now removes iron and manganese to below secondary MCL limits.
WASTEWATER Our health and environment s stability depends on the reliability, consistency and quality of each community s wastewater treatment initiatives. ISG s multi-disciplinary team uses their experience and ingenuity to help our clients plan, design and implement for today s needs and discover opportunities to maximize performance, realize full capacity and prepare for the future. From master plans that include assessment of existing facilities and recommendations for improvements to complete wastewater facility design, construction administration or wastewater collection systems, ISG knows the regulatory requirements, understands the financial models and funding sources, has the collaborative relationships and the true expertise to supply efficient and cost-effective results. Master Planning and Facility Plans Wastewater Treatment Plants Sanitary Sewers/Wastewater Collection Systems Stabilization Ponds Wastewater Operations Lift Stations and Pumping Facilities Hydraulic System Modeling and Analysis Inflow/Infiltration Studies Alta, IA User Rate Studies Years of updating a 1950 s trickling filter treatment system led the City Regulatory Assistance of Alta to utilize ISG for an in-depth evaluation. Recent changes to Industrial Wastewater Services water quality standards required lower ammonia nitrogen and bacteria In-house Structural and Electrical Design ALTA WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT discharge limits that could not currently be met. ISG recommended construction of a new Aero-Mod, Inc. SEQUOX activated sludge system, which results in high energy efficiency and a smaller footprint compared to other activated sludge designs, which lowers costs. The new treatment system has shown significant improvement over the previous system, yielding an average reduction of NH3-N by 91% over the treatment efficiency of the old plant. KINGSLEY WASTEWATER TREATMENT Kinglsey, IA The City of Kingsley s aerated lagoon was not capable of meeting changes to Iowa s water quality colder ISG standards, months. recommended particularly Following a retrofitting the in the detailed analysis, existing wastewater treatment lagoons using a Submerged Attached Growth Reactor (SAGR). The removal in disinfection stringent Iowa SAGR cold is to system bacterial primarily moderate designed climates. An also allows the limits during summer Wastewater Design Standards to city provide effluent to months. did not ammonia ultraviolet meet Since more the specifically address the SAGR process, the IDNR stepped in to approve it as an acceptable alternative technology. This project was one of the first installations in Iowa using SAGR technology.
SLOAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT Sloan, IA Because the City of Sloan s aging plant had been upgraded multiple times and had difficulty meeting IDNR requirements, ISG designed a new system consisting of a covered two-cell aerated lagoon with a polishing reactor (LemTec ) and UV disinfection. A sewage grinder is included in the inlet structure for the lagoon. The covered aerated lagoon handles the increased loading from the Infiltration and Inflow (I/I), and retains heat during winter months which decreases the footprint needed for the nitrification process in the polishing reactor. The new treatment system allows the city to easily achieve effluent water quality limits as required by their NPDES permit. MADISON LAKE REGIONALIZATION Madison Lake, MN With ISG acting as the engineer for the City of Madison Lake, an analysis of wastewater treatment options resulted in an outcome of regionalization, rather than expansion or construction of a new plant. It included the design and construction of a lift station and forcemain, and treatment of Madison Lake s sanitary sewer flows. In addition, residents around three regional lakes wished to form a sanitary sewer district and participate in the construction of the regional forcemain. This resulted in a dual-purpose project that serves the City of Madison Lake, and provides a sanitary sewer outlet for over 400 lake homes.
OTHER SPECIALIZED PUBLIC WORKS EXPERTISE Municipal Engineering Infrastructure, roads, bridges, water and sewer systems it s the foundation of every public works project. It impacts the entire community. It s how we get to work each day, how we treat our natural resources, and what we look at when traveling about our cities. Municipal engineering is important work that demands highly skilled engineers engineers that are true experts in the technical aspects of complex public projects. At ISG, our civil engineers take their job a step further. They look at infrastructure as a responsibility. Their job is to serve the people and to work together with their fellow citizens to ensure a thriving and healthy environment, smooth mobility and wise use of public and private funds. Transportation Transportation networks, parking and pedestrian mobility have tremendous impact on our communities, their economic viability, citizen satisfaction, environmental health and future development. At ISG, we work closely with our clients and work diligently to engage and listen to community members, officials and stakeholders so we can fully understand their needs, desires and development objectives and meet them with safe and efficient solutions. We plan, design and manage projects for a variety of transportation infrastructure including highways, streets, bridges and designs for traffic control and detour plans. Our multi-disciplinary team of experts are well versed in state and federal funding mechanisms and they analyze projects and advise clients on which improvements are good candidates for those funding programs. Municipal Administration There is a significant amount of work and extensive knowledge necessary to efficiently run the day-to-day activities of a municipality. City clerks and administrators work hard and wear several hats and they readily admit that often times some extra assistance and expertise could benefit their city. In the spirit of working ingenuity, ISG tapped our municipality experts to offer administrative services and counsel. Our group has former city administrators on staff that can help guide your community in planning and zoning, community and economic development and administrative needs. Municipal Resource Planning It s inevitable. As our cities grow and age, there is a great need for a variety of improvements to facilities and infrastructure. Our planners have developed Capital Improvement Programs to help cities prioritize improvements and ensure public funds are used most efficiently. We use our expertise to gather information and study your proposed projects. We then develop weighted scoring criteria that determine project importance. Finally, we provide accurate project costs to assist decision makers as we develop the very best foundation for the improvement plan. As part of the plan, ISG will assist with exploring ways to best finance capital improvements, including the potential for federal, state and agency loans and grants. Land Surveying At ISG, we do more than recognize the fundamental importance of measuring and collecting accurate site data. When our clients are provided with accurate maps and site information, they are assured their investment is safe, the survey is true, and they are building on a reliable legal foundation. Whether the project requires simple boundary identification or a more complex survey, ISG land surveyors accurately obtain information using traditional survey methods complemented by the latest technology, including in-house 3D laser scanning services.
