WP3 goal To showcase specific prevenfon and mifgafon measures/ acf ons (outlined in the UNEP/MAP Regional Plan on Marine lite r Management in the Mediterranean under ar5cle 9 and 10) aiming to reduce the input and impacts of marine liter in the Mediterranean coastal and marine environment.
WP3 in a nutshell ) Singe-use plasfc bags reducf on Deposit refund systems for beverage packaging FfL, targeted recovery of ghost nets & DFG management Turning plasfc marine liter into products The no-special fee system BioremediaFon & biodegradafon processes for plasfcs Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE Task Leader: Consorzio Mediterraneo Task Leader: ECNC Land & Sea Group Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE Task Leader: UniBO
Single - use plasfc bags reducf on (Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE) Facts & figures q 1.2 trillion plas5c bags are used annually worldwide; q 300 bags are used annually per individual or one million bags per min; q E ach plas5c bag is used on average for just 12 min before being discarded; q S i n gle-use plas5c bags are among the top 12 liter items found on beaches and the seabed in the Mediterranean. Demo project(s) Voluntary agreements with retailers and supermarkets will be established in order to reduce the amount of plas5c bags used, coupled with awareness raising ac5vi5es.
Deposit refund systems for beverage packaging (Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE) Deposit refund systems are considered to be an effec5ve way of reducing liver, while removing the cost of disposal from general taxafon and placing the addi5onal costs on manufacturers, distributors & consumers Demo project(s) Deposit and/or refund systems for beverage packaging will be established drawing experience from interna5onal case studies.
FfL, targeted recovery of ghost nets & DFG management (Task Leader: Consorzio Mediterraneo) Ghost nets retrieval from sea Fishing for liver campaigns Derelict fishing gear management schemes
Turning plasfc marine liter into products (Task Leader: ECNC Land & Sea Group)
The no-special fee system (Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE) Some 20% of the liver entering the marine environment originates from sea-based sources. Demo project Pilo5ng the no-special-fee approach applied in the Bal5c sea. The no-specialfee system is generally considered as an incen5ve for ships to deliver their waste at the port recep5on facili5es as the port dues are to be paid whether or not waste is delivered.
BioremediaFon & biodegradafon process on plasfcs (Task Leader: UniBO) A research ac5vity focusing on the use of plas5c-degrading microbes found on weathered plas5cs to develop: novel biotechnological processes able to degrade plas5c waste; ex-situ bioaugmenta5on protocols to enhance biodegrada5on of (micro)plas5cs under condi5ons similar to those found in the marine environment (e.g. temperature, light, etc.)
WP5 goal To enhance the awareness and understanding of stakeholders on the different measures to tackle marine liver, promote appropriate decisions and necessary acf on towards implemen5ng them
WP5 in a nutshell ) FloaF ng plamorm for awareness raising Task Leader: Fispmed Tailor-made marine liter stakeholder approaches and campaigns Task Leader: ECNC Land & Sea Group EducaFonal acf vifes targeted to youth & educators Task Leader: MIO-ECSDE
