Trevor Strutt, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Yingde Gases Shanghai: A CHINESE SUCCESS STORY Our journey begins in Shanghai, one of the country s biggest cities at more than 23 million people. The restless metropolis is testament to China s economic boom: In 2010, Shanghai s total GDP climbed to CNY trillion ( billion) and is currently growing at a dazzling 9.9% rate. The recent World Exposition attracted 73 million visitors to what is considered the birthplace of everything modern in China. New industries get their start in the city at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Commerce and industry reign supreme: Only 0.7% of Shanghai s economic output is generated by agriculture. Manufacturing already accounts for 39.9%. Since December 2010, Shanghai is also home to the first Gas and Process production and packaging facility in East Asia, along with the corresponding Aftermarket services. For a major Chinese success story, look no further than longtime Atlas Copco Gas and Process customer Yingde Gases: Established in 2001, the company is now the largest domestic independent industrial gas supplier specializing in on-site gas supply in China. Yingde Gases specializes in the investment, construction, production, and operation of industrial gas plants for a variety of industries. Relying on customized Atlas Copco turbocompressors for their air-separation plants all over China, Yingde Gases serves industries including iron and steel, chemical and petrochemical, electronics, non-ferrous-metal manufacture, and more. At Yingde Gases headquarters in Pudong, Shanghai, we are greeted by Trevor Strutt, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. Alluding to the company s tremendous growth, Trevor Strutt says: China is a lot about being at the right place, at the right time. At the time, we knew the way business was going. 4

Location: Pudong, Shanghai Industry: Air Separation Growing Together as Trusting Partners Early on, Yingde Gases realized that China s growing steel industry would require large volumes of industrial gases: primarily oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. This meant larger gas production plants, and the company continuously raised the bar over the years: First came Nm³/h air separation plants, then Nm 3 /h, soon Nm³/h, says Trevor Strutt. Supporting this growth as a trusted partner, Atlas Copco Gas and Process worked closely with Yingde Gases, setting new benchmarks along the way: That partnership culminated in 2006, when the Gas and Process Division received Yingde s order for its biggest machine ever, the GT153 three-stage main air compressor with a flow volume of Nm³/h. Shipped from Germany, the GT153 is now the centerpiece of a Nm 3 /h air-separation unit feeding oxygen to Yingde Gases customer Rizhao Steel in the Shandong province. The GT153 compressor joins two other Gas and Process machines at Rizhao: The GT123, a three-stage air compressor and a six-stage GT087 air compressor, both used in the same application. The Rizhao project was an important stepping stone for Yingde Gases and the Gas and Process Division: The Rizhao project gave us a good image. Soon enough, other companies put similar faith in Yingde Gases, says Trevor Strutt. Reliability, Safe Processes, High Performance Yingde Gases has more than doubled its growth and industrial-gas output over the past years. It now operates 31 industrial gas-supply facilities and it s still growing. While total installed capacity for gas production is expected to reach Nm³/h before the end of 2011, Yingde Gases is developing another 11 production facilities across the country. A few days after the visit at Yingde Gases headquarters, we would see these values in action, embodied by the gigantic GT153 turbocompressor at the Rizhao steel mill up North. 5

6 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Shandong Province: PRECIOUS METALS We now fly into the Shandong province to visit the city of Rizhao. With a population of almost 92 million, Shandong is the third-most-populated province in China. The immense region on the North China Plain is known for its rich deposits of diamonds, precious metals, and petroleum. Thanks to massive growth in the manufacturing and industrial production segments, Shandong now generates the country s third-highest GDP, currently at a stunning CNY 3.98 trillion ( 450 billion) in The Rizhao steel mill is a prime example for growth in the Shandong region: Since taking up operations in September 2003, the plant has grown by leaps and bounds and is now home to two enormous blast furnaces. In 2015, the production base will reach a capacity of million metric tons of steel per year. The mill produces pig iron, steel billet, deformed bar, round bar and h-beam for the world market. Steel billet is the basis for long steel products such as bars, rods, pipes, tubes, wire, and wire products. Many of the mill s steel products are the backbone of large-scale construction projects such as bridges, airports, and stadiums. A Major Stepping Stone For Atlas Copco Gas and Process customer Yingde Gas, setting up an air-separation plant in 2003 to feed oxygen and nitrogen to the growing steel mill proved a major stepping stone in the early days of the company: Rizhao put a lot of faith in us with a Nm³/h plant, and we delivered, Trevor Strutt, Yingde Gases Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer says. Looking at the enormous steel production site today, with the plant s large cold boxes towering over the entire landscape, it is hard to believe that the plant has been operating for only eight years. Today, Rizhao Steel is the largest private steel mill in China and reported a profit of CNY 4.5 billion ( 508 million) in In total, the capacity of the three air separation units at Rizhao is Nm³/h, with the largest one being Nm³/h. Asked about the performance features of Atlas Copco machinery, our host, Yingde Gases Plant Manager Yang Bin, says without hesitation: Stability and reliability. 6

Trevor Strutt, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Yingde Gases Technical Profile At the Rizhao Steel Mill, Yingde Gases is operating the largest turbocompressor ever built by the Gas and Process Division, the GT153 three-stage main air compressor, delivered in late Type: Three-stage GT153L3K1 Flow Volume: Nm³/h Inlet Pressure: 0.99 bar (a) Outlet Pressure: 6.4 bar (a) The King of the GT Compressor Family The Air Separation plants received its biggest boost in September 2008 with the arrival of the GT153, the biggest machine ever built by the Gas and Process Division. The size of a suburban house and weighing in at more than 300 tons, the three-stage main air compressor provides a flow volume of about Nm³/h, driven by a synchronous motor. Witnessing the GT153 in action is an experience in itself. The massive machine is nicknamed The Big Baby, and the name is well-deserved: Even the coolers used on the GT153 are twice the size of a human being. The GT153 has an outlet pressure of about 6 bar(a), and the diameter of the impeller on the first stage clocks in more than 1.50 meter. The roar of this giant machine is not only heard throughout the factory: As a milestone project, the GT153 has already generated lots of attention for the division s air-separation competency on both the Chinese and the global market. 8 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Changzhou: PRODUCTION HOTBED A Hotbed of Productivity G&P Stories is now on its way to visit Gas and Process customer Zenith Steel in the fertile agricultural area of China s Jiangsu province. Even before we arrive, we witness the first indicators of the company s business and success: Massive construction sites for new skyscrapers fly by on both sides of the highway symbols for the continuing construction boom and the accompanying demand for steel. About 150 kilometers south of Shanghai, we reach Changzhou. The prefecture city is emerging as an engineering hub with numerous large-scale production facilities. So far, a total of 42 leading Fortune-500 companies have set up branches in Changzhou, and many more are following their lead. As busy as a beehive, the Zenith Steel facility in Changzhou is a true city within a city. At 4.5 square kilometers, it has an independent infrastructure, including food courts and housing for thousands of workers. At the heart of the steel mill is Zenith s air-separation plant. It uses an industrial process to separate atmospheric air into its primary components, typically nitrogen and oxygen. Atlas Copco turbomachinery helps get this job done. Zenith Steel is a major business segment of the Zenith Group, a global player in areas such as logistics, railway, and the hotel business established in With an industrial output of CNY billion ( 4.8 billion) and reported business revenues of CNY billion ( 5.6 billion), the Zenith Group has been among the top 500 enterprises in China for the last six years. A Reputation for Excellence We are greeted by Zhou Yongping, Vice President and Vice General Manager of Zenith Steel. He brought Atlas Copco Gas and Process on board during an expansion of the Changzhou steel mill s oxygen plant in 2003: Atlas Copco is a name that stands for reliability. In our industry, this is the most important factor, Zhou Yongping explains his decision, adding: We also looked at other references and listened to word of mouth. We came to a similar conclusion. The existing air-separation plants produce Nm 3 /h, powered by nine Atlas Copco Gas and Process machines: three main air compressors (MACs), three booster air compressors (BACs), and three turboexpanders. Zenith Steel also uses several other Atlas Copco compressors to support its production process. MACs, BACs and expanders are key equipment in an air-separation plant. Oxygen production is the basis, and the Atlas Copco machinery has been very reliable. We are very satisfied, says Zhou Yongping. 8

Zhou Yongping, Vice President and Vice General Manager, Zenith Steel Rapid Expansion Demand for steel in the region has grown exponentially over the past years. It s a driver for large-scale construction projects, civic engineering, and public infrastructure, as well as shipbuilding, pipeline construction, and the automobile industry. Most large buildings and structures including stadiums, skyscrapers, and bridges are supported by a steel skeleton. In order to keep up, Zenith Steel is currently expanding its capacity to almost double capacity up to Nm 3 /h by mid Eventually, Zenith Steel which started with tons of steel in 2001 aims to produce ten million tons of steel per year, up from current outputs between six and eight million tons. To this end, Zenith Steel has ordered six additional Atlas Copco machines; two MACs, two BACs, and two turboexpanders. These orders are a continuation of the enduring partnership between Zenith Steel and the Gas and Process Division: After the selection of Atlas Copo, we never looked back. We are very satisfied with them as our vendor for turbomachinery, says Zhou Yongping. 11 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Ru Chengjun, President Leaving the tall white towers of Zenith Steel behind us, we next reach the second-largest commercial center in Eastern China: Nanjing. Over the past few years, the city has experienced a tremendous economic boom in key industries such as electronics, automotive, petrochemical, iron and steel, as well as power generation. In 2010, the city s GDP ranked third in the Jiangsu region. Nanjing s progressive spirit has a perfect match in Nanjing Bluestar Chemical New Materials Co., a leading international chemicals and new materials company based in Beijing. The company drives a wide range of innovative processes as one of the country s largest producers of silicon and special epoxy resin, as well as numerous materials derived from petrochemicals. The company s advanced materials feature prominently in the aerospace industry, where they are used in encapsulated cockpit window gaskets and to encapsulate sensitive electronics. The automotive industry relies on Bluestar lubricants and fire-proof insulation. The company is also driving a wide range of sustainable innovations, such as efficient coatings for photovoltaic power cells and non-toxic silicones used in healthcare. One of the most enthusiastic voices for the future of Bluestar belongs to our host, Ru Chengjun, President of the Nanjing Bluestar Chemical New Materials Company: A strong economy relies on a strong chemicals industry because the chemicals industry is related to so many things. 12 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS The BDO plant runs at 100% capacity. Growth on the Fast Track In 2010, international sales already exceeded USD 6 billion for the mostly state-owned company. Bluestar is a subsidiary of the ChinaChem Group, which owns 80% of the company, while the remaining 20% belong to a US private equity firm, the Blackstone Group. Bluestar has enhanced its strategic position on the world market with a number of acquisitions. In Nanjing, Bluestar focuses on production chains based on petroleum, petrochemicals, and chemical raw materials. One of the biggest growth segments in the field is the production of butanediol (BDO), a chemical intermediate used to produce highperformance polymers, solvents, and fine chemicals. BDO is also used in the manufacture of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), a plastic in high demand in the automotive and electronics industries. One of the major success stories at the site goes back to 2009, when Bluestar was looking for a turbomachinery provider for a new production plant for BDO: Just before President Ru Chengjun was ready to make his decision, he received a recommendation from a trusted colleague and subsequently decided to work with an Atlas Copco turbocompressor. Stability non-stop operation is crucial for us to ensure stable production. Efficiency is also important. After a visit to Gas and Process headquarters in Cologne, Ru Chengjun returned to Nanjing deeply impressed. The Nanjing BDO plant went live in May 2009 and was already running at 100% capacity one month later. We trust Atlas Copco. They listen, they coordinate, they have a quick response. We value these things very much, says Ru Chengjun about the continuing relationship, adding: We also value the presence they have in Shanghai now. 14 HIGHLIGHTS 2011 Gas and Process Highlights has been an exciting year for Atlas Copco Gas and Process. With a new Divisional President, milestone orders in new markets, the acquisition of cryogenic-pump manufacturer JC Carter, and a focus on renewables, the division is setting its sights firmly on the future. Let s revisit some of Gas and Process finest hours from a highlight-filled year. Leadership A New Man at the Helm When one door closes, another one opens: At the beginning of 2011, Peter Wagner took office as President of Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division, following in the footsteps of the retired Dré Schmitz, who had served as President for eight years. Wagner has been a part of Atlas Copco since 1995 and brought a strong blend of managerial experience (most recently as General Manager of Atlas Copco Comptec LLC) to his new post. One thing, however, remains as important as ever: a commitment to Gas and Process customers around the globe. We understand that productivity is key for our customers sustainable productivity, said Wagner in a G&P Stories interview earlier this year. If our customers are competitive, we will be successful, too, he added. With Wagner s move to Divisional President, Robert Radimeczky assumed Wagner s previous post as General Manager at Atlas Copco Comptec LLC, which is part of the Gas and Process Division. 14

15 HIGHLIGHTS 2011 Acquisition Growing the Atlas Copco Family In March 2011, Gas and Process welcomed its newest member to the Atlas Copco family: JC Carter Pumps. New Business A Focus on Renewable Energy In addition to the familiar territory of its traditional markets, Atlas Copco Gas and Process also stepped onto some relatively uncharted territory most notably renewables. There were two major highlights in this area. Founded in 1946, the company has been a pioneer in the global pump industry, providing applications across the LNG value chain and in the chemical/petrochemical industries. JC Carter s first cryogenic submerged motor pump (SMP) in 1961 launched an entire industry, and the 2nd generation pump technology in 1995 cemented the company as the frontrunner of SMP products. In 2003, JC Carter separated itself again with its groundbreaking release of 3rd generation pump technology. Currently, Atlas Copco JC Carter Pumps is the only company with access to this new line of more efficient, environmentallyfriendly SMPs. In a project won in early 2011, the division is supplying the expander generators and the complete Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system for a 1.8 MW waste-heat-recovery plant in Judy Creek, Canada (pictured above). Just a few months later came the news of a large order for the geothermal industry: As consortium leader and working with two partners, Atlas Copco will deliver a complete geothermal ORC plant to Çelikler Jeotermal Elektrik of Turkey. Once operational in late 2012, the plant will supply 45 MW of clean energy and keep tons of CO 2 per year out of the atmosphere. The Perfect Match As a company that prides itself on innovation, Atlas Copco Gas and Process proved a perfect home for JC Carter. The company brings a vast product portfolio that fits in neatly with Gas and Process current products, said Harald Dany, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Atlas Copco Gas and Process. Bringing JC Carter on board represents an important growth opportunity for Atlas Copco, particularly in the LNG and chemical/petrochemical industries, which are both very important to us down the road. It s a perfect match between two companies with a strong focus on innovation, Dany added. 15

16 HIGHLIGHTS 2011 Pushing Into Shale Gas True to its roots, Atlas Copco Gas and Process, in 2011 again brought new products to market. Supplementing its existing customized products for gas processing applications, Gas and Process introduced a new standardized regeneration gas compressor and a new standardized turboexpander solution known as ECOTS. The products primarily target the needs of customers in the strongly emerging North American Shale Gas market. Research & Development Reaching New Horizons of Innovation Pushing the limits of what s technically possible, driving innovation that keeps customers competitive that s the mission of the Gas and Process Division s R&D department. In 2011, the team once again lived up to that billing. One key highlight was the unveiling of the first-ever four-stage GT056 air compressor that s fully designed and built by Atlas Copco (incl. adding the gear box and a new cooler design). Boasting improved efficiency, the compressor helps expand the air range Atlas Copco supplies to its air-separation customers on the lower end (about to Nm 3 /h). Active Magnetic Bearings Introduced This year also saw the launch of Atlas Copco s self-developed Active Magnetic Bearings (pictured above) and their deployment under real-life conditions in a turboexpander known as Salut (application: pressure letdown, in the Middle East). Our bearings can be installed much quicker, and they are optimized to the other operational parameters of the machine. For our customers, this ensures greater overall efficiency, explained Stefan Bosen, Vice President of R&D. This year also saw the launch of a new H Series compressor (air and nitrogen), one of Gas and Process banner products. Built in two-or three-stage configurations, this new compressor (flow volume to m 3 /h, discharge pressures 3.5 to 10.4 bar) is a price-competitive alternative for customers who place great emphasis on the aspect of power before making a machine purchase. The compressor s superior efficiency impellers offer a lower power solution. New Business Orders Across the Globe 2011 marked a successful year for Atlas Copco Gas and Process. The division won substantial orders all over the world and was able to strengthen its profile across several markets. The year started off strong when the division received a large power-generation order for the Ma aden Aluminum Project in Saudi Arabia. Gas and Process will provide 20 centrifugal gas compressors for a fuel-gas-boosting application in a new MW combined-cycle power plant outside of Jubail, Saudi Arabia (comparable plant shown below). Re-Inventing Stability Last but not least, Gas and Process cooperating with the University of Hanover developed and successfully tested a method (now patented) for viably starting the compressor motors again after an electrical blackout occurs. The patent also covers the corresponding electrical circuit for the method. Our invention is particularly helpful for customers in regions with unstable power supply. Our system helps avert potential damage to the compressor when magnetic forces of compressor shutdown and start-up would normally clash and cause problems, said Bosen. 16

17 HIGHLIGHTS 2011 Trade Shows A World Tour of Trade Shows From Doha and Amsterdam to Moscow, Milan, and Houston: In 2011, Atlas Copco Gas and Process continued its tour across the globe, meeting with thousands of existing and potential future customers at trade shows. These were opportunities for us to communicate directly with our customers and share our latest and greatest innovations in the field, while also hearing about new requirements and market trends. Aftermarket Quick, Flexible, and Competent From installation and commissioning to maintenance and inspection projects: In hundreds of cases this year, the Gas and Process Division s global Aftermarket team ensured that customer processes run smoothly and productively now and in the future. It s hard to choose from the many 2011 highlights small and large that could be mentioned here. One special milestone, however, was an upgrade from SPS S5 to SPS S7 conducted for Wacker Chemie, one of the world s largest chemicals companies. Without the excellent performance and the great flexibility of Atlas Copco and all other partners, this project could not have been carried out so quickly and at such a high level. This enabled us to be producing again quickly even ahead of schedule, says Martin Maier, Operating Engineer Technical Gases at Wacker Chemie in Burghausen, Germany. We took our open and inviting booth to six locations around the world this year, with renewables and our broad offering for the oil and gas markets being main focus areas. One highlight was the GeoPower Turkey in Istanbul, where Atlas Copco served as Platinum Sponsor and Divisional President Peter Wagner delivered his keynote Together in Sustainable Energy to geothermal-industry leaders. 17

18 NEWS Dr. Struck Named Business Line Manager for CIS Strengthening its activities in Russia and the CIS states, Atlas Copco Gas and Process has named Dr. Henning Struck Business Line Manager effective January 1, Dr. Struck will be based in Moscow, where Gas and Process also has its Center of Competence for Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB). His responsibilities will include the development of the Gas and Process Division s business in the CIS states, both in prime sales and the aftermarket. Dr. Struck will also oversee the ongoing integration of the AMB business into the Gas and Process Division. Between June 12 and June 14, we will share our latest power-generation and powerindustry solutions, with a special focus on renewables. 19 NEWS Expanding our energy recovery Expertise Lárus Eliasson In the energy-recovery market, an essential customer-service requirement is the ability to offer turnkey solutions: one-stop-shopping options that cover everything from optimized handling of geothermal resources over Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system design to commissioning. To meet such high demands and to enhance its own portfolio of expertise the Gas and Process Division launched the Geothermal Competence Center (GCC) in late Atlas Copco Gas and Process has hired three of the world s most well-known geothermal experts to head up the team: Lárus Eliasson, Björn Herbertsson, and Dr. Pall Valdimarsson, who also acts as professor emeritus at the United Nations University s Geothermal Training Programme. Based in the World s Geothermal Hub Located in Reykjavík, Iceland, the world s leading hub of geothermal sciences and technology, the GCC acts as a functional organization within the Gas and Process Division, pulling together resources from the product companies as needed for each individual project query. For example, the GCC working closely with the division s Research & Development and Application and Sales departments will support customers with energy-recovery projects on complex ORC-system design and optimization for specific plant requirements. Launching the GCC further strengthens our division s profile as a supplier of complete ORC systems. It provides our customers with extensive access to vast technical expertise and experience a crucial element in successfully planning and carrying out projects both in geothermal and other areas of energy recovery, said Peter Wagner, President of Gas and Process.
