Editorial Working hand in hand with you Following an extremely busy winter and spring at the Application Centre Far East, summer is gradually rolling into Shanghai, and I am pleased to present to you this year s second edition of the G&P Stories. This magazine will offer an inside look at some of the Gas and Process Division s recent activities and successes, with a special focus on the Asian market. You ll read about our flying start this year, with several large-scale contracts in the Far East. Those contracts as well as the Hohhot project also featured in these G&P Stories mark breakthrough orders for us and proved that we are competitive in the hotly contested Asian market for high-engineered process gas applications. These types of successes are fruits of hard labour over the last three years: Since we created and installed the Application Centres worldwide, the market has responded very favourably to our efforts of bringing the experts and know-how closer to the customers. That pertains to the Far East and to our other global Application Centres as well. Over the past few years, we have advanced our processes, and we perceive each contract as a co-effort of supplier and customer. That means co-thinking from the planning phase to the aftermarket. First, we listen. Then, we analyse and plan. And finally, we provide customised solutions meeting even the most complex requirements. All of this happens in a close dialogue with our customers. In this magazine, you will read about two examples of that, one being the forward-thinking Greenhouse project in the Netherlands. My European colleagues helped realise this ambitious endeavour from start to finish. And in our News Section, you will read about a project where we supply compressors for a Chinese customer operating in highly adverse conditions in the mountains. But as well as 2006 has started off for us, we have little time to rest on our laurels: Already, we are fully focused on the upcoming challenges in the Far Eastern market, where China and Korea spearhead a vast growth development in nearly all industry segments. With respect to the Far Eastern market as a whole, we see the greatest potential for our machines in larger air separation plants, in several chemical and petrochemical applications, and, of course, in power plants and on LNG vessels. I am confident that our decades-long experience in these areas will help us maintain the current momentum and flexibly meet the current and future challenges that you, our customers, will pose to us. Best regards, Ulrich Schmitz Business Line Manager 3
Atlas Copco Gas and Process Hohhot: At a glance Hohhot, or the Green City, as it s known in Mongolian, is located at the heart of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which belongs to China. With a population of 700,000, Hohhot is also the region s capital. The city, some 500 kilometres away from China s capital, Beijing, is situated to the south of the Yinshan Mountains and to the north of the Yellow River. Dating back to ancient times, Hohhot has a long-running history as a centre of trade and culture. That hasn t changed: Today it s still the region s centre stage for politics, business, science, education, and culture. Hohhot as well as the surrounding region offer a vast abundance of natural resources, such as minerals (e.g., gold, copper, beryl, zinc etc.), though the city has also emerged as a major production hub for numerous other industrial branches. 4
Customers in focus The road to Hohhot Turbocompressors complete the long journey to Inner Mongolia The road to Hohhot can seem long at times. Running through the green, wide open plains and the soft, rolling hills of Inner Mongolia, there are only scattered signs pointing to the vast abundance of natural resources that the region has to offer. A truck with a load of coal may roll down the road, for example, or visitors may drive by farms or small mining facilities. People travelling the region are then in for a surprise when they reach Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and part of China. Even if Hohhot s name means Green City in Mongolian, this is no longer the wild world that Dschingis Khan used to roam. This is a highly-developed industrial hub with a population of 700,000 and home to numerous big-hitters of international business. Hohhot was also the destination for three custom-made high-pressure, integrally geared turbocompressors built by Atlas Copco s Gas and Process Division and operating since late The Atlas Copco team took the road to Hohhot numerous times (an hour by air, another hour by car), before winning the biggest single order that the Division had ever received. And it was also the largest-ever order from the vastly booming Chinese market. 5
Atlas Copco Gas and Process Meeting stringent requirements The three GT-Series compressors were delivered to a petrochemical facility of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Tianye Chemical Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. The company s Hohhot division produces chemical fertilisers and other chemical products. The customer uses the compressors in different applications. One machine, a natural gas centrifugal compressor, is used in an ammonia plant for fertiliser production, while the other two compressors (another natural gas centrifugal compressors and a combine centrifugal compressor), are being employed in the expansion of an existing methanol plant. One of the machines, for example, is a six-stage integrally-geared compressor for hydrogen mixtures. It operates at a pressure of 20 to 80 bar abs, with a drive power of 9.6 Megawatts. In all cases, large amounts of natural and process gas (30,000 40,000 NM3) are being processed. The biggest challenge we faced with this machine was implementing two simultaneous process cycles in one single machine, said Atlas Copco project manager Helmut Sauerwald. But in designing the machines for Hohhot, Atlas Copco met that challenge something that impressed the customer. Atlas Copco calculated in detail and considered the changing process conditions, said Gao Yongfang, Project Manager and Department Director for Technology and Development at the Tianye Chemical Industry Group, a company with 1,700 employees. For Atlas Copco Gas and Process, the Hohhot contract is a major breakthrough in a key market. China is the fastest growing market for industrial applications. The Atlas Copco machines can be employed in countless such applications, and we have now built an extensive resume of references, said Ulrich Schmitz, Business Line Manager at the Division s Shanghai-based Application Centre Far East and part of a seven-member team involved in the contract. That we were awarded the Hohhot contract shows once again that we can serve a broad range of markets and applications. The Atlas Copco track record also played a key role in convincing decision-makers in Hohhot such as project head Gao Yongfang. Their references in the Asian market were very important for us in our decision to use the Atlas Copco machines, he said, adding that the advanced technology, the design concept, and the good reputation were equally crucial. From Cologne to Inner Mongolia The Atlas Copco engineering and sales team won the contract after tireless, months-long efforts and following numerous trips to Inner Mongolia. But even that was just half the distance on the road to Hohhot. With the order recieved, in March 2004, the focus shifted back to Cologne, some 5,000 miles away and home of the Division s headquarters and the production facilities. For months, the massive machines towered in the production plant, as workers assem- At the Cologne testbed, a delegation from China got a first-hand look at the compressors. 7 Customers in focus bled the GTs piece by piece and put on the finishing touches before test runs. In light of the complex requirements posed by the systems employed at the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Tianye Chemical Industry (Group) Co., Ltd., Atlas Copco engineers and the customer convened in Cologne in winter 2004/2005 for a so-called control meeting. A seamless and secure integration into the existing systems is extremely important in these types of applications, said Sauerwald. Following successful test runs in the test bed, the three machines were then shipped to Inner Mongolia. They were installed by May 2005, and the Tianye Chemical Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. started operating the machines late last year. For Atlas Copco s Gas and Process Division, the road to Hohhot was a key milestone en route to greater presence in a booming growth market, China. Quite simply said: orders such as the Hohhot contract are strategic breakthroughs for us. This project provides us with yet another valuable references for potential customers down the road, said Schmitz. The three compressors are now all up and running. 7
Atlas Copco Gas and Process Let it grow Hoek Loos takes lead role in Greenhouse project It s bad for the environment, can be dangerous for humans, and yet it s so incredibly important for plants and life on this planet: Carbondioxide (CO 2 ) is food for plants, they need this gas. It fuels the photosynthesis process producing the oxygen that humans breathe. In a country such as the Netherlands, with 10,000 total hectares of horticulture, the demand for the CO 2 is particular great. The problem, though: supplying Dutch greenhouses with sufficient amounts of CO 2 and doing so at a reasonable cost. Hoek Loos and its partners have taken the lead in an ambitious project that s not only cost-effective for greenhouse farmers but also ecologically sound. 8
Feature All smiles: Piet van Heteren, Manager External Projects at Hoek Loos, and Sander van Spijk, Atlas Copco Sales Manager for Benelux. In the so-called Greenhouse project, carbondioxide that normally would be blasted into the air is now recycled and put to use in the greenhouses, feeding roses, tomatoes, or salad, for example. In realising the Greenhouse project, Hoek Loos, the Dutch division of Linde Gas and a customer of Atlas Copco Gas and Process, teamed up with Dutch construction company Volker Wessels to form the OCAP consortium. The enterprise buys CO 2 gas produced by the Shell refinery and chemical plant in Pernis (in the first stage, 170,000 tons per year), just outside of Rotterdam. The idea behind it was: Every hour, every day, a lot of carbondioxide from Shell goes into the air. We need to find a way to do something with that CO 2, explains Piet van Heteren, Manager External Projects at Hoek Loos. More than 200 kilometres of pipelines Via a long and complex distribution network of pipelines, the carbondioxide is delivered to the greenhouses in Westland and the so-called B-Triangle, two of the Netherlands key horticultural areas. So far, about a 300 greenhouse farmers receive their CO 2 through the system, which OCAP unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late summer of Van Heteren says that by the end of 2006 around 500 will be connected to the distribution network, which spans a total of 210 kilometres (nearly all of it underground). The idea of supplying CO 2 this way had been floating around for a while (two engineers from a company named Syens developed the idea). But the idea didn t come to fruition until Volker Wessels and Hoek Loos took the lead in 2004 and decided to shoulder the substantial investment required for the project. Van Heteren says Greenhouse required an in-depth planning and preparation phase. How many greenhouses must be connected to make it a feasible project and how much CO 2 do we need to make this happen?. Each and every centimetre of an existing former oil pipeline 85 kilometres long and with a 26-inch diameter has been tested and examined. The pipeline serves as the main supply artery, and also includes a buffer to account for the vastly fluctuating demand of CO 2 (in the greenhouses, peak times for CO 2 use are during the day, between 6 A.M. and 6 P.M., but no CO 2 is needed at night). Turning down the heat Greenhouse provides a host of advantages, both ecological and economical. First off, this new method offers substantial environmental benefits because the farmers no longer have to burn natural gas to produce the food for their plants. Emissions are also drastically reduced because Shell Pernis no longer emits 170,000 tons of CO 2 from their hydrogen production: the gas is now recycled. Then there are the financial benefits: in the past, many farmers had to resort to heating in the middle of summer and scorching heat just to feed their plants. Now they procure the CO 2 cost-efficiently, and adjust their demand flexibly. In the winter, they can still use CO 2 generated during heating. But in the summer, they can obtain their CO 2 cost-efficiently through OCAP. In the past, they had to burn, burn, burn. Now they just open the faucet and have CO 2 available when they want it, says van Heteren. In all, 95 9
Atlas Copco Gas and Process million cubic metres of natural gas per year are saved thanks to the new approach. But Greenhouse also improves product yield and product quality. Some rose cultivators in the region have reported yield increases of 40 percent after Greenhouse went online. Atlas Copco and Hoek Loos: Working hand in hand In the OCAP project, Hoek Loos is responsible for gas treatment and transportation. In essence, we handle everything that has to do with the gas compression, says van Heteren. To equip its compressor station, located just next door to Shell Pernis, Hoek Loos opted for Atlas Copco compressors (three four-stage GT050). Operating between a pressure range of 11 to 21 bar, they are responsible for compressing the CO 2 that s fed into the pipelines and routed to the greenhouses. A fourth Atlas Copco compressor (a four-stage GT040 for liquid) is also located inside the station, known as Plot 16, but it is used for a different purpose: This machine is integrated into a process that Hoek Loos uses to refine Shell Pernis CO 2 for the food industry. The CO 2 from that process is used for carbonation in soft drinks, in packaging, or in the all-so-trendy coffee pads. If necessary, the fourth compressor is also capable of delivering CO 2 through the OCAP pipeline by opening a run-over valve. In choosing suitable compressors for the ambitious project, Hoek Loos had stringent requirements. Trying to identify suitable machinery, it also factored in its past positive experience with Atlas Copco compressors. For this project, we looked closely at the market and asked: Who can build something like this?, says van Heteren, And the name that kept popping up was Atlas Copco. Adds the project manager: In this case, not only the price determined our decision, but also the vast opportunities that these compressors offer. Variability is very important for the Greenhouse project, and these machines can easily shoulder that. Then, following an intensive dialogue between both sides, Atlas Copco engineered compressors precisely customised to the needs of OCAP. A future source of CO 2 supply for horticulture? Following the initial success of Greenhouse, OCAP is exploring similar projects, for now in other parts of the Netherlands. A prime candidate is the main horticultural region 10
Feature south of Amsterdam s Schiphol airport. No doubt, there will be similar projects in the future, at least ones on a smaller scale. But you keep getting back to the crux of the matter: where s your CO 2 source?, says van Heteren. Carbondioxide it s not just the food for plants, but also the invisible backbone of the Greenhouse project. New Task Sander van Spijk, who is Sales Manager for Benelux and also took the lead role in winning the Greenhouse contract, now has an expanded sphere of activity at Atlas Copco Gas and Process. In addition to his current job serving the Netherlands and Belgium he will work with Rafael Cañete (Oil Free Manager) in covering the Spanish market. In essence, we are streamlining our respective areas of expertise, with my role being technical and commercial support, said van Spijk, who has been with the company since Hoek Loos at a glance In 1907, Hoek began its operations in the Dutch city of Schiedam with the production of small locomotives for mines. Less than a century later, Hoek Loos is fully part of one of the largest multinationals in the field of technical and medical gas supplies, Linde AG. Seven hundred employees in the Benelux are involved in the production, marketing, and distribution of these gases, along with related equipment and services. The company undertakes the production and delivery of 200 gases and gas mixtures in any desired quantity and purity. In the Netherlands, Hoek Loos (starting January 1, 2007: Linde Gas Benelux ) operates its own air separation plants in IJmuiden and the Botlek area of Rotterdam. Just recently, Hoek Loos completed tonnage and on-site production installations providing onsite production of nitrogen and compressed instrument air for a large number of businesses in the Delfzijl port region in the northern part of the country. Also, the harbour at Delfzijl, situated on the Eems, is becoming an increasingly important one for some regions in neighbouring Germany. The area where the Greenhouse compressors are based is called Plot
Atlas Copco Gas and Process News Ticker Fresh blood for sales and application engineering team Upgrading the Division s team, there have recently been several personnel moves in sales and application engineering. Michael Shafer, 34, has filled the position that Ralf Kiefer vacated in application engineering. Shafer is one of five recent additions to the Atlas Copco Gas and Process application engineering team. He joined the Atlas Copco after working for a large international industrial group. Shafer, who was born in the southern German city of Bamberg, brings extensive international experience to the company. He has worked in marketing and engineering in Italy, the United States, Japan, and Hungary. As an application engineer specialising in GT compressors, Shafer will be responsible for serving the market segment Power Generation. Right away, it became apparent to me that the success of the Gas and Process Division comes directly from our people being committed to the success of our customer s processes this is the main advantage at GAP, says Shafer. The management style used here places a lot of trust in the employees, which immediately energises the whole working day. Like his colleague Shafer, Marco Alessandri, 32, also brings a vast amount of international experience to the table. Alessandri spent several years working in Rome in sales and in technical evaluation, but also split time between his native, Italy, and London. Before joining Atlas Copco, On January 1 of this year, Ralf Kiefer, 43, has assumed the position as Atlas Copco Gas and Process sales manager for central and northern Germany. He will serve clients in an area spanning from the northern state of Schleswig- Holstein to Hesse, located in central Germany. Kiefer has been with Atlas Copco Gas and Process since 1990 and has worked in many areas for the company, from controls engineering, contract coordination to application engineering, his most recent responsibility. Before joining Atlas Copco, Kiefer worked for the energy and chemical giant Shell AG. The new sales manager is looking forward to his work, and he says his past experience will make the transition easier. My new job will be a big challenge, but one factor that will surely help me in sales is my understanding of the company s basis. I try to never lose sight of my roots and where I came from, says Kiefer. Combining talent and experience: the new group of application engineers. From left to right: Dr. Peter Kraus, Christian Esch, Michael Shafer, Daniel Springmann, Marco Alessandri Alessandri gained substantial experience in one of his new employer s key markets, the petrochemical industry. At Atlas Copco, Alessandri primarily focuses on the highly dynamic LNG growth market, but also works in the areas of air separation. His job, he says, can best be described as a type of information interface between different departments. What I really like about my job is that I always learn something new, says Alessandri. Another addition to the Atlas Copco team, Dr. Peter Kraus, 40, will also be functioning as an important interface in processes. The application engineer will serve as a key link between technology and customer, with an emphasis on process gas machinery. Kraus, who earned his degree and his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart, joins the company after working for a large Germany-based industrial group, where he spent five years as Key Account Manager in the area of Service Gas Turbines. I came to Atlas Copco because I wanted to expand my horizon and advance professionally, says Kraus. The company produces a first-class product, and I like the technical challenge of the tailor-made approach. Daniel Springmann, 27, and Christian Esch, 26, are the youngest new members of the application engineering team. Springmann joined Atlas Copco Gas and Process on March 1. He studied mechanical engineering in Cologne and also spent three years working in sales for a subsidiary of Bosch. What I like about my new job is that the product is much more complex. Atlas Copco develops products that you simply cannot get everywhere, says Springmann. And I like this challenge, he adds. Meanwhile, Esch, a native of the southwestern German city of Villingen-Schwenningen, studied mechanical engineering and graduated in spring 2005 after writing his thesis paper at MTU Friedrichshafen, an international supplier of drive systems. In his work at Atlas Copco, Esch primarily focuses on the air separation market. What I like about the job is the responsibility I have here, as well as the potential of the position and the company as a whole, says Esch. 12
News PERSONALS There has also been a key personnel change to our team on the other side of the Atlantic: On March 1, 2006, Roberto Becker assumed the position as product manager. Based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Becker is covering sales for Brazil and the neighbouring countries. A graduate of FAAP University in Sao Paulo with a degree in mechanical engineering, Becker joined Atlas Copco in Before starting in his new job as product manager, he worked in other areas of the company, serving as Technical Support Supervisor and as Service Manager. Becker will report directly to Nasser Sadeghzadeh, Business Line Manager for North and South America. His superb technical background and customer experience will enable him to learn quickly, said Sadeghzadeh, Roberto has a thorough understanding of the products manufactured by the Gas and Process Division and marketed and sold in Brazil. We re heading back to Texas Atlas Copco secures major LNG contract from South Korea Atlas Copco, in partnership with marine specialist Hamworthy Gas Systems, has received a major contract for the liquid natural gas (LNG) market. The Atlas Copco part of the total contract is worth more than MSEK 140 (MEUR 14). Delivery is set for the first half of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) of Korea has ordered ten nitrogen companders and ten boil-off-gas compressors from Atlas Copco Energas in Germany. This is the fourth large-scale order from the LNG market over the past year, all from the Far East. Like all the machines booked previously, the companders (a threestage nitrogen compressor coupled with an expansion turbine) and the boil-off gas compressors, will be employed in an innovative way for the reliquefaction of LNG aboard ships. Atlas Copco and Hamworthy have been partners for many years, working jointly on the development of this new process. The LNG market is expanding globally right now, resulting in a high demand for new, large LNG tankers. This latest order confirms Atlas Copco s strong position in the LNG market, says Bengt Kvarnbäck, Business Area President, Atlas Copco Compressor Technique. The order from DSME was won by a partnership between Atlas Copco s Gas and Process Division and Hamworthy, a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative marine and offshore fluid handling systems. The two companies have partnered previously for various LNG projects worldwide. The Houston Turbo Show is a fixture on the international trade fair calendar, and Atlas Copco Gas and Process will return to Texas this fall and present itself at this key event, which will take place September 25-28, The Turbomachinery Symposium, as it s officially known, traditionally takes place in the George R. Brown Convention Center. The Atlas Copco team is greatly looking forward to meeting with you in Texas next fall. 13
Atlas Copco Gas and Process News Ticker Division lands breakthrough order from Chinese fertiliser industry Atlas Copco has won a breakthrough contract from the Chinese fertiliser industry for three integrally geared centrifugal compressors. The compressors are for the Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. in Golmud, China. Amounting to an overall order value of approximately MSEK 66 (MEUR 7), the machines will be used in several of the plant s process cycles. The Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. is China s largest producer of potash fertiliser. The Golmud facility also produces ammonia and will, in the future, also produce other chemical products. Atlas Copco will deliver three highly customized machines to the Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group: a six-stage compressor for the main air supply, a five-stage compressor used for the hydrogen feed cycle, and a four-stage ammonia compressor. The machines will have to operate in very difficult conditions as the plant is located at an altitude of 2,600 metres and near a salt lake. Atlas Copco used a special anti-corrosive material to protect the machines against a condition known as salt fog. Prevalent mainly in coastal areas, salt fog also exists in the area around the plant. ability to build customised compressors meeting highly specialised customer requirements, says Bengt Kvarnbäck, President of Atlas Copco s Compressor Technique business area. The order, won by Atlas Copco s Gas and Process Division, strengthens the division s position in the Far Eastern market. By winning the contract, Atlas Copco is once again demonstrating its Qinghai salt lakes 14
