4 FEATURE Preparation Everything is It s a chilly, quiet November afternoon in the Portuguese municipality of Estarreja, but the local Air Liquide chemical plant seems to have turned into a beehive. Its halls are buzzing with activity as Plant Manager Luis Ferreira and his team coordinate preventive maintenance or as they call it a turnaround. This process involves shutting down the plant for 33 days, but it ensures that one of its most essential machines, a centrifugal gas compressor supplied by Atlas Copco Gas and Process, keeps operating as smoothly as before. 4

5 FEATURE The Atlas Copco Aftermarket team integrated very well into our team, performed all its work on time, and brought great experience to the table. Smooth operation is key in any industry, but Air Liquide Portugal is a special case. The company has been at home in Estarreja, a municipality on North Portugal s Silver Coast, since It shares the site with facilities from domestic chemicals giant Companhia União Fabril (CUF) and international industry player Dow Chemical Company. The three companies aren t merely neighbors they are business partners. In fact, they couldn t work more closely together. Air Liquide added its third Estarreja chemical plant, home of the Atlas Copco gas compressor, in 2009, after a major deal between the three companies that committed each to expanding its operations. Luis Ferreira, Plant Manager at Air Liquide Portugal Depending on Each Other Air Liquide s Estarreja chemical plants produce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen, the raw materials that CUF and the Dow Chemical Company then process to produce a variety of chemicals. This means that the slightest technical problem or downtime in Air Liquide s operations would have imminent negative consequences on its neighbors, who directly depend on the company s gaseous products. Atlas Copco s centrifugal gas compressor, located at the heart of the CO plant, is one of the most essential links in the long production chain. It has two sections with three stages each: The first section helps compress CO that is supplied to Dow Chemical at 10.5 bar outlet pressure. The second stage further compresses the CO to 38 bar to be used in the plant s cold cycle. With the compressor s support, Air Liquide supplies Nm³/ hour of CO for Dow Chemical s production of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, better known as MDI. This organic compound is then used to make polyurethane, a material foam found in many kinds of insulation, adhesives, and synthetic fibers. The main feedstock for MDI, in turn, is the organic compound aniline. CUF creates aniline by using the Nm³/hour of hydrogen Air Liquide delivers. 5

6 FEATURE In preparation for this maintenance initiative, we had a very good and close collaboration with Atlas Copco s Aftermarket team. What s more, they can be found in some unexpected places: skateboard wheels, for example. No Time to Waste For this complex interplay of production processes to work perfectly, preventive maintenance has to be scheduled and planned carefully. A turnaround happens about every two years, and the one conducted by Plant Manager Luis Ferreira and his team in late 2011 was the first one implemented at this particular plant. For 33 days, a maximum of 15 pieces of equipment were shut down for inspection and maintenance, including the Atlas Copco compressor. For three weeks, the Atlas Copco Aftermarket team disassembled the compressor s dry seals, inspected inlet and outlet piping, and checked safety valves all essential anticipatory measures because CO is a hazardous gas that can t be released into the atmosphere. It s difficult work on a tight timeline: Dow Chemical relies on Air Liquide s 99.7% availability rate to meet its production needs, so Ferreira and the Atlas Copco team had no time to waste. Everything in Its Right Place Although the intensity of the actual turnaround process lasts only about a month, the preceding time is even busier for Ferreira, who has been with Air Liquide since 1973 and at the Estarreja site since The turnaround means about six months of work planning and preparation, Ferreira says. In preparation for this maintenance initiative, we had a very good and close collaboration with Atlas Copco s Aftermarket team. During this time, spare parts are ordered and delivered, and every detail of the turnaround schedule is coordinated, checked, and re-checked. If a single part or detail is missing, it means a huge loss of time and money for Air Liquide and its customers. Ferreira, who chose the Atlas Copco gas compressor for its reliability in 2009, knew he could trust the company for highquality service as well. The Atlas Copco Aftermarket team integrated very well into our team, performed all its work on time, and brought great experience to the table, Ferreira said. The machine performed very well in the past, and it performs very well now. We are very satisfied. 6

7 FEATURE About Air Liquide Founded in 1902, Air Liquide produces various industrial gases used in the medical, chemical, and electronics industries. Oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen are Air Liquide s primary gas products. Following production, the company packages and distributes the gases for use by its customers. Headquartered in Paris, France, Air Liquide employs more than people in more than 80 countries. In 2011, the company generated more than 14 billion euros in revenue. Air Liquide Portugal was established in 1923 and currently serves more than customers. The Estarreja site serves as a key hub for the company in Portugal. Up and Running The turnaround was completed on December 3, However, the gas compressor supplied by Atlas Copco Gas and Process had already been up and running since November 13. It s the first machine in Air Liquide s CO-generation process, so it acted as a starting signal for the rest of the plant and kicked off another two years of seamless operation. Today, the Estarreja plant is back to its regular schedule and things are humming along smoothly. But in a short 15 months, turnaround preparation will transform the Air Liquide chemical plant into a buzzing beehive once more. A bird s-eye view The plant has 99.7% availability. 7

9 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Expanding an Ambitious Project China isn t only the world s fastest-growing economy it s also a breathtaking blend of tradition and progress, innovation and industry. Wison Group Holding Limited mirrors the diversity and dynamic development of its home country. Comprising 11 member companies, the industry giant specializes in engineering services, offshore and marine engineering, clean energies, and emerging industries such as biopharmaceuticals and telecommunications, among other things. In 2005, Atlas Copco Gas and Process joined Wison s long and diverse list of business partners when it delivered two five-stage GT032 CO compressors to the company. A Customer With Many Facets Wison seems to be involved in every major aspect of human life: Apart from the exploration, development, and utilization of energy resources such as coal, petroleum oil, and natural gas, Wison provides customers across a range of industries with high-quality products and professional services, including engineering consulting and procurement. Wison Group subsidiary Wison Engineering builds plants and provides technology consulting in the petroleum, chemical, coal-chemical, and oil-refinery industries. The company works with engineering firms, local design institutes, construction companies, and suppliers worldwide. Wison acquired two Atlas Copco CO compressors at two different stages (in 2005 and 2008) and via two of its subsidiaries to serve two CO plants that are part of a gigantic combined coalchemical facility located in the coastal city of Nanjing in China s Jiangsu Province. About Wison Engineering (China) Co., Ltd. Wison Engineering (China) Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Wison (Group) Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shanghai, China. The group consists of 11 companies and specializes in the engineering, procurement, and construction of petroleum-oil, chemical, coal-chemical, and refinery facilities. It provides customers with research reports, engineering consulting, engineering, procurement, construction, general contractor services, project management, training, and commissioning. 9

10 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Our relationship with Atlas Copco is very good. The most important things for us are the quality of the machinery, the service, and the delivery times. Everything has to be smooth. Zhang Jin, Procurement Business Director at Wison Engineering 1 Phase 1: A Challenging Project In 2005, Wison (Nanjing) Clean Energy Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Wison Group also known as Wison Energy, needed a strong turbocompressor solution to help produce purified carbon monoxide (CO) at the Nanjing coal-chemical plant. The CO is used as a raw material in the complex production of acetic acid, which is then delivered to Wison Energy s customer, the global chemicals player Celanese. The Fiber of Daily Life Acetic acid is a chemical used to make a wide range of products, including plastic bottles, adhesives, fabrics, and fibers. To most people, it s quite familiar in its diluted form: vinegar. China accounts for an impressive 30% of the continuously rising global demand for acetic acid, its rate of consumption increasing about 7% each year. Finding an efficient compressor to help Wison supply purified CO for acetic-acid production was no easy task, especially under a tight timeline. Because carbon monoxide is a substance toxic to humans and the environment, the process cycle must be absolutely leak-proof. Additionally, the compressor must not exceed a maximum outlet temperature of 120 C in order to prevent any temperature-related reaction of the CO. Enter the five-stage GT032 CO compressor built by Atlas Copco Gas and Process: Delivered in early 2006, the machine fit the process requirements perfectly, including the specific power range of 3.2 MW required by process provider Linde Engineering. The entire set was up and running within five months, processing tons of coal and tons of carbon monoxide a year. 10

11 CUSTOMERS IN FOCUS Technical Profile The Wison Energy plant in Nanjing is home to two Atlas Copco Gas and Process CO compressors, including the five-stage GT032 CO compressor delivered in 2009 for phase 2 of the plant expansion. Type: Five-stage GT032T5D1 Flow volume: Nm3/h Inlet pressure: 11.2 bar (a) 2Outlet pressure: 38 bar (a) 11 Phase 2: Direct Cooperation In early 2007, when it was time for phase two of the Nanjing CO plant an ambitious expansion of plant capacity to t/a (tons per annum) of carbon monoxide Wison decided to extend its collection of Atlas Copco Gas and Process machinery by ordering a similar GT032T5D1 turbocompressor. This time, Wison and Atlas Copco worked together directly, without the involvement of a process provider. Once again, Wison had good reasons to choose Atlas Copco. We did some research on who can make this machine, and we know some other companies who use Atlas Copco. We heard of references and heard about performance, which was good. So we decided to also work with Atlas Copco, said Cao Xianjie, Procurement Supervision Director at Wison Engineering. Ambition on a Large Scale Today, the combined Wison coal-chemical plant in Nanjing covers a land area of square meters, which is equivalent to roughly 87 football fields. It includes its own utilities and auxiliary facilities, and it even features dedicated railway and highway transport lines. In a facility this huge, every machine has to work without a hitch, and the suppliers who provided it have to be 100% reliable. In the eyes of Zhang Jin, Wison Engineering Procurement Business Director, Atlas Copco has proven itself in both regards. The relationship is very good, he says. The most important things for us are the quality of the machinery, the service, and the delivery times. Everything has to be smooth. Thanks to Atlas Copco s prior experience with the plant requirements, the phase 2 project could be completed and started up in September 2009.

13 INTERVIEW As renewable energy in general and geothermal in particular gain traction in the global energy mix, Atlas Copco Gas and Process is enhancing both its expertise and its product portfolio in the geothermal sector. G&P Stories talked to Lárus Elíasson, Manager at the company s new Geothermal Competence Center (GCC), about the future of energy recovery and about Atlas Copco s role in this future. G&P Stories: You are from Iceland, a country known for abundant geothermal resources. How do you see your birthplace s relationship with geothermal energy? It s interesting: People in Iceland have only known for 15 or 20 years that what they are doing is considered green. We ve been harnessing geothermal resources for a long time. It was only after World War II and the oil crisis that geothermal energy emerged as the least expensive and most effective source of energy. Eventually, Iceland started exporting its geothermal energy and expertise to the rest of the world. Before I started at Atlas Copco, I worked for a company dedicated to doing just that. Can you describe the experience of seeing a geothermal project Atlas Copco Gas and Process has supported "come to life"? Such projects become like children to me: There s a sense of fulfillment and then you have to hand them over to the customer and leave them behind. It s wonderful to see something that was conceived on paper being built in the real world and on a large scale. For the past 10 years, I ve been more on the management side of the geothermal business, so I focused on bringing the best from our employees and partners to our customers rather than designing the plants myself. You are Manager of the Geothermal Competence Center (GCC), which was set up last year by the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division. What sets the GCC apart? We offer everything from an expander package to a made-toorder turnkey geothermal Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plant. Atlas Copco is a company with sourcing all around the world, packaging presences across the globe, and an international customer-service network. We bring a lot of strengths to the table and hence are able to do more in this area. Another key offering that sets us apart is our ability to build large-scale medium-temperature geothermal facilities. Currently, we offer the largest binary-cycle plants on the market. Tell us about the GCC team. Who works with you on these projects? I work with a diverse group of industry experts, such as Prof. Dr. Pall Valdimarsson, currently one of the most renowned names in geothermal. Our team includes people with expertise in geothermal, expanders, sourcing, and specific processes. It s a good mix. But the GCC doesn t only benefit from our own expertise. Based on the task, we put together project teams across different Atlas Copco product companies. 13

14 INTERVIEW How do Atlas Copco s company values interaction, commitment, innovation play into its offering in the area of renewables? For one, there s Atlas Copco s complete dedication to efficiency. Because of the innovative technology behind our machines, we deliver more power with our equipment. Then there s Atlas Copco s commitment to customer satisfaction. We only deliver machines we believe are going to work for many years to come without major difficulties or wear-and-tear. Last but not least, Atlas Copco Gas and Process is a very customer-focused company. When customers choose to work with us, they ll see that we apply our philosophy of interaction and commitment at every step of the project. Please tell us about the projects the GCC team is currently supporting. We are currently realizing a complete binary-cycle geothermal plant at the Pamukören site in Turkey. Even before Pamukören, Atlas Copco had earned excellent geothermal references, including the expanders we provided to Enel Green Power s plants in Nevada. They ve been operating at 99.5% availability since they were commissioned, and the customers smiles can be seen from miles away. It s wonderful to see something that was conceived on paper being built in the real world and on a large scale. Lárus Elíasson, General Manager Geothermal Competence Center (GCC) What main advantages do customers get from the broad product support the GCC offers? We help in evaluating the resource, as well as the feasibility of building a geothermal ORC plant in the given territory. We also provide or facilitate a variety of easy, flexible financing options that allow customers to effectively finance equipment or projects. With ventures of this scale, customers need to feel absolutely secure when choosing a partner who helps them realize geothermal projects and supplies the required solutions. And where can they get that security? From a large, wellknown company that brings great technical expertise and a commitment to customer satisfaction. The customers appreciate the peace of mind and so do financial institutions. Are there any future ventures you can talk about? There are several hot tickets currently on the market. One consists of so-called bottoming plants, where our plant would be used in series with a regular flash plant in order to increase efficiency and to minimize the use of groundwater, which is often a limited resource. We are also focusing on turnkey solutions, like the one in Pamukören, for a variety of customers. Are there any external partners the GCC will be working with in order to maximize customer benefits and offer complete solutions? Yes, definitely. I m very much for combining strengths and forging strong partnerships. We have affiliates all over the world who are not only highly skilled but also very attuned to the laws and traditions of their respective regions. 14

15 INTERVIEW The Geothermal Competence Center (GCC) To expand its offering in the geothermal sector, Atlas Copco Gas and Process founded the Geothermal Competence Center (GCC) in late The functional organization located in Reykjavik, Iceland, is headed up by three of the world s most well-known geothermal experts: Lárus Elíasson, Björn Herbertsson, and Prof. Dr. Pall Valdimarsson. The GCC provides tailored solutions, including ORC system design, commissioning, and financing. In what regions or specific countries do you see the greatest potential for growth in geothermal? As far as the availability of geothermal resources is concerned, Indonesia is the leader, and we are excited to expand into this market. We are also targeting the Philippines and New Zealand, in addition to our existing active markets: Turkey, Germany, and the Americas. However, as a worldwide organization with a global sales force, we can build geothermal plants anywhere and will be happy to. What role do you think geothermal will play in the global energy mix in the future? There is not going to be any one resource that will completely meet the world s energy needs. We are going to see more and more different types of resources, all of them doing their part, but none of them doing everything. Geothermal will always be a part of this big picture, especially as the earth s oil resources are getting depleted. Looking to the future, in which areas is the GCC seeking to expand expertise? Our goal is to have someone on the team for every step of an energy-recovery project. We are also very interested in further developing our expertise in high-enthalpy design. Most importantly, though, we want to be close to the customer. To achieve this objective, we are able to draw from the strengths of Atlas Copco as a whole. It s a company that sells compressors all over the world. These machines are comparable to heat-recovery units for small geothermal plants. If any company stands a good chance of creating a modular unit for use in geothermal, it s Atlas Copco. The same technology is also used for waste heat recovery (WHR), and we are taking our first steps toward that market by building a WHR plant in Canada. It s an opportunity we should take advantage of. It s our goal to be First in Mind-First in Choice for anyone who owns a heat source with the potential to generate power. 15

16 NEWS Shanghai Success After starting operations in January of last year, the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division s packaging facility in Shanghai, China, has already realized several of the ambitious goals set during the plant s planning stages. An oil system for the chemical / petrochemical market This ETB 190MS turboexpander will be used in air separation. A single-stage turbocompressor for the chemical /petrochemical sector In addition to product sourcing and Aftermarket services, the square-meter Atlas Copco (Shanghai) Process Equipment Co., Ltd. facility handles packaging of air and gas processors, expanders, auxiliary systems, and process-gas piping. Serving Key Industries The equipment is used in a variety of industries in East Asia, such as industrial gases, petrochemical, and natural-gas industries. So far, the machines packaged at the Shanghai facility include multi-stage CO 2 compressors, fully localized single-stage compressor-loaded expanders, and oil units. Current packaging projects include single-stage N 2 recycle compressors, four-stage centrifugal MAC / BAC compressors, and fully localized centrifugal gas compressors. Close Interaction Apart from localizing services, the Shanghai facility also enables Atlas Copco Gas and Process to interact more closely and personally with its customers in the region. All of our biggest customers have visited the plant to see our products for themselves or to attend on-site meetings, says Udo Junk, General Manager of Atlas Copco (Shanghai) Process Equipment Co., Ltd. 17 NEWS Packing More Punch Atlas Copco Gas and Process extends packaging facility in Pune, India. Atlas Copco Gas and Process has strengthened its presence in India by extending its packaging facility in the city of Pune. The new, modernized facility allows Atlas Copco to keep pace with India s industrial development and growing demand for localized production. The main objective of the expansion is to significantly raise output, optimize efficiency, decrease reliance on subcontractors, and minimize delivery times. Expanding Service With a footprint of square meters, the new site is six times the size of Atlas Copco Gas and Process previous packaging plant in Pune. It houses the packaging space and storage area for a wide spectrum of the division s centrifugal air and gas compressors, which are used in industries such as industrial gases, iron and steel, fertilizer production, and chemical / petrochemical. More Flexibility, More Speed The extended facility complies with international regulations pertaining to safety, health, and the environment. It is outfitted with a full office infrastructure, as well as state-of-the-art equipment such as cranes, a hydro-test facility, and instrument air supply. Because up to six machines can now be packaged at the same time, Atlas Copco Gas and Process is able to satisfy customer requirements in the region more quickly and flexibly. Building on a packaging presence in India that dates back to 1993, Atlas Copco Gas and Process established its own dedicated packaging and production facility in Pune, India, in The growing business required a bigger facility, which was inaugurated in

David Smith Named Sales and Application Manager David Smith, 36, has been appointed Sales and Application Manager for Atlas Copco Comptec LLC, Atlas Copco s compressor product line in the Americas. He assumed his new post in February of this year. Smith brings more than a decade of experience in the power-generation and the oil and gas industries and has worked at the company for six years. He started with Atlas Copco as an application engineer and became an application team leader in His appointment as Sales and Application Manager continues Atlas Copco s philosophy of recruiting its leaders from within the company.
