2 Even cleaner water on tap for We re constantly working to improve the supply and quality of your water, so you can continue to receive clean, fresh water for your morning shower and to enjoy a great cuppa. Through our network of pipes we supply water to around seven million customers in North West England, but age catches up with everything, including our pipes! Some of the pipes in the area are over 90 years old, and over time natural mineral deposits have built up inside. These deposits are not harmful, although they can sometimes cause the water to become discoloured. So what are we doing? We re carrying out a 14 million programme of work over a four year period to clean and refurbish over 30km of our large water pipes. Our work will be completed over nine projects, and involves a variety of methods to improve the supply and quality of water for almost 43,000 properties in. The map on the back of this leaflet illustrates the pipe route for all nine projects. We ve almost finished our work on project one, and we re currently working on project nine which is expected to be completed in June Our work in your area Work has now started on project two to clean and refurbish the water pipe that runs from Cumwhinton Water Treatment Works through Scotby. We expect this project will be completed in Winter We ll also be starting work on Project 3 in summer 2017.

4 How this work may affect you We ll be carrying out our work in your area using two construction methods: Slip lining: This involves digging a hole at specific points to access the existing pipe. We ll then insert a new plastic pipe inside, which creates a secure new lining within the existing water pipe. Open cut: We ll construct a completely new section of pipe to replace the existing water main. To do this will require a longer area of the ground to be opened up so we can lay the new pipe. Traffic management As part of our work we may need to put in place temporary traffic management, lane closures and on occasions we may need to temporarily close roads. We understand this will be inconvenient, but don t worry, we ll do all we can to minimise disruption. If you live or work in the area we ll write to you prior to starting any work, and provide information about any traffic management to ensure we keep you updated as our work progresses. Temporary changes to the appearance of your water supply During our work there is a possibility that you may experience a slight discolouration to your water supply. We re sorry if this affects you, and we understand it can look unpleasant. We ll do all we can to prevent this from happening. To ensure we keep taps flowing to homes and businesses while we re carrying out our work, the water will need to be re-routed and flow direction changed. This can disturb mineral deposits, and may result in temporary discolouration to your water supply. This can often be cleared by gently running the first incoming cold water tap (usually in the kitchen) on a slow trickle until it clears. Air can sometimes become trapped in the pipe while we re carrying out our work, and this can give a cloudy or milky appearance to your water supply. If a glass is filled, and left to stand for a few minutes, you should notice that tiny air bubbles will rise to the surface of the water. Don t worry, the water supply will clear as the air escapes from the pipes through normal use.
